The Alabama Hills are one of the most unique and beautiful landscapes in California. In addition to sitting below the stunning Sierra Nevada and serving as a backdrop for hundreds of movies and TV shows, the Alabama Hills are famous for their natural rock arches. An avid explorer can find literally thousands of arches dotting the boulder fields here: everything from holes the size of a peanut, to enormous rainbows of rock you could throw a wombat through. In this week's episode I return to my remote arch and attempt to Shoot it at sunrise. Will the conditions cooperate??? Only one way to find out.
Warning: scrambling is a potentially dangerous activity and should not be attempted by inexperienced hikers.
LNT Notice: when traveling cross-country in a desert landscape, avoid stepping on bushes, animal burrows, or any crusty soil. Travel / hike on durable surfaces like rock whenever possible. Don't pull up any dry brush to use in your campfire. Pack out all your trash and toilet paper. The land thanks you!

Where have you been all my life??? Finally, a real photographer that knows how to deliver material and priceless content, who doesn't pretend to be the second coming. Make it fun, keep it light, but still get the message across. Your videos are priceless. And your techniques are spot on. Thanks so much .

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend 5 days in the Eastern Sierra in 2018. Can’t wait to get back.

A flippy Mcflip flip screen would have been handy there. 😂 Great vid and image mate 🤙

Great watch in this series. We must visit your gallery when visiting Lone Pine and the surrounding area later this year in Sept/Oct.

I liked the first photo also with the sun stars. I scanned your equipment list to see if you added a telescoping ladder, carbon fiber of course. :)

Too bad you did not get the conditions you hoped for. But now you a reason to come back. ;-) Was nice to see climbing up to your camera. Fortunately you have long leg, I have to bring a ladder :-)

Great stuff Josh. While not what you were hoping for, delighted you managed to get a killer shot. Once again hats off to your focus and determination, it's clear from your images that all that extra effort really pays off. Cheers 👍

And I thought it only happened to me when it seems everything goes wrong in the field...just when it needs to come together. Hey, great attitude about moving forward, learning from the disappointment and planning for the next opportunity. There will be another sunrise or storm...the arch will still be there...stay positive!

It looks that you're such a resilient guy. Do you really keep this good humor in these situations?! I'd have thrown my camera or cell phone away! At least you have long legs and you're in good shape to stretch your legs to climb those boulders to see what was happening in the camera screen.

too sad it didn`t work out... but at the end - that's the game. Sometimes you loose, sometimes you win. :-)

Too bad you didn't get the light you wanted. But if we look at it from the bright side, it gives you a reason to get back to that beautiful location soon again.

If every shot worked out, for everybody, we'd ALL be out there shooting. Right? Love your dedication and tenacity! Wish I lived that close to the Sierra's and the Mojave! (Significant Smother wants to move to Minnesota. (WTF?) The only thing I could say to her was, "Knock yourself out.")

Did you consider just hovering the drone to take the photo ?

I generally enjoy your videos, often with kids in the room - usually educational & fun. The surprise cursing makes this problematic. I work in technology so I totally understand the frustration of that moment: a BEEP or just masking that bit of audio would have made this a great video.
