Autumn Schrock is inspired by the moon and its beauty. The different moon phases or times of day, as well as your composition, can affect your photo’s story. Autumn shares how to take all of these elements into consideration when photographing the moon, as well as striking the balance between planning (using apps like PhotoPills) and improvising in the field.

What does the moon symbolize to you? Which moon phase is your favorite?

I used to stare at the moon every night when I was a kid. It was my companion and friend. I truly felt and share Autumn’s joy in this video. Thanks for making me remember this feeling. I almost cried 😊.

Same here. The moon has always intrigued me and I’ve photographed it many times over the years. It’s hard to pick a favorite phase. I Love this video. Thanks!

I love either before the sun rises or blue hour right after it sets. There’s a spot where it looks like it’s so close and beaming through the trees. Making its presence known.

I really enjoyed your video. I took lots of notes. I like all the phases & their reflections. My favorite moon photo I took was a close-up of a full moon that was the best I'd manage to capture. It reminded me of my youth when I imagined the man in the moon image I could see when I looked up at it.

The moon calendar is much more accurate than the sun calendar. One of the most impressive things about moon photography from ancient times to today is the most beautiful illusion in our lives. It is because the phase of the moon is just shadow play between the moon, earth, and sun. We are lucky enough to watch it almost every day.

Great video. Ive started to take up astro and completely underestimated the fun that could be had with the moon. For your shot at 10:54, was that single shot?
@autpops
@autpops 6 месяцев назад
Yes! The moon is so much fun to photograph. I love it, obviously 😄 That shot is a single exposure! It was light enough out that I didn’t need to take separate exposures for the moon and foreground. It looks like I took that photo at 7:13 am and sunrise was at 5:48 am, to give you an idea of timing. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

I really enjoyed hearing you describe and seeing different ways to photograph the moon with the environment. I'm surprised to see you and Nate shoot so many times hand holding your camera, especially with the moon. Is this how you would normally shoot or just for the video. Living in CIncinnati, I need to come up with features of the environment to shoot with the moon, especially nature shots. LOVE the series. I'm a Sony shooter and love the type of photography you and Nate are doing.

So glad to hear that you’re enjoying the series! I do typically lean toward shooting handheld just because it gives me more flexibility with composition. The moon moves quickly (and beautiful golden light for sunrise/sunset can be fleeting as well), so being able to move around faster usually allows me to snag a few different compositions that I may have missed while trying to adjust my tripod. Of course, I do use a tripod when it’s darker out for cleaner images. Hope that helps!

Nice photography. I was surprised to see you not use a tripod for the shots to insure clarity.
@autpops
@autpops 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! I’ll use a tripod when it’s darker, but it was pretty light out for this moon shot. Plus it’s handy when you’re photographing alignments to have some flexibility to maneuver around for slightly different angles/compositions. The moon moves quickly, so sometimes I prefer to shoot it handheld if I can

On top of Autumn's camera is a wireless HDMI transmitter. She is sending the camera's video feed to an external monitor else where.

Autumn, I am enjoying this series and this episode is one of the best. Great work. I always enjoy going to the Tetons. I downloaded PhotoPills about a year ago but I am struggling with the learning curve, so many tools in the app. One quick question: what is the device attached to the top of your camera?

Circular polarizing filters are like magic! They can help to darken skies, as well as add contrast and saturation. You can darken the sky in post-processing as well, but I highly recommend circular polarizers!

It is the Hollyland Mars video transmitter, we are using it to send a feed of her camera with the menu overlays to a recorder for the demo.

You did not mention lunar eclipses. I find them fascinating and they are more visible to more people than are total lunar eclipses. Have you done much work capturing different types of lunar eclipses? It would be an interesting video in its own right.

Full moon first followed by a quarter moon & favorite time would be just after Blue Hour or is that called Twilight. With no IBIS, i'm not trying handheld unless I can lean up against something solid. She is going to kill your tripod sales!🙃
