Part 1 of a week in Wales. In this part we visit Water Break-Its-Neck, a waterfall in the Radnor Forest for some Landscape photography and the Red Kite feeding station at Gigrin Farm which gives me some great wildlife photographs but with mixed feelings. We are staying at Bleddfa in a lovely lodge surrounded by countryside, rabbits and horses.

Great video especially Gigrin Farm which I was lucky enough to visit last year when we stayed in Crickhowell which is a fantastic base in the Brecon Beacons. To be honest I was a bit like you in as much that I thought the whole staged feeding element would take a little something away, but walking up the path back to the car after it was over I really felt privileged at what I’d just witnessed. My visit gave me a better understanding & appreciation for what Gigrin Farm has done & continues to do for the Red Kite in Wales & I just wish we would have something like it in England. I understand years ago the guy who owns it started feeding a pair of Red Kites which were quite rare at the time. Eventually the numbers grew so much that it attracted the attention of the RSPB who approached the farmer & got involved to make it what it is today. Yes, they charge for admission & for the hides, but it goes to a good cause & is so much better than the other two feeding stations in Wales that I’ve visited which are both financially motivated & driven & didn’t seem to give a damn about the birds, as long as they put on a good show. Really looking forward to part two. Mark🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hi Mark. Please you liked the video. Defiantly an interesting place to visit and like you I think they have done a great job with supporting the growth in numbers. I am not one for paid hides but have to say it is worth trying once. Cheers Keith

I can understand your opinion of Gigrin being a bit unnatural but it really is a great place to practice your bird in flight techniques. I know many people who have been there thinking that because there are so many birds at close quarters it is too easy to get great images. Definitely not the case 😁. The sheer number of birds makes it very difficult indeed. I have always found that it is best to just watch and enjoy the spectacle when the food is first put out and then wait until most of it is gone. Most of the visitors drift off but there is always a nucleus of birds hanging around and that is when I get my better images. What has to be remembered of course is that Gigrin played an enormous role in the rescuing of the Red Kite from extinction in the U.K. Another site that is smaller and has less visitors is at Llandeusant in the Black Mountains. Glad you enjoyed your stay in Gods Country 👌

Everything you say is spot on Robert I totally agree that the best images were after the crowds have gone. Don’t get me wrong I think it an amazing thing that they have achieved over the years and probably if it wasn’t for places like that we would not have Red Kites in Northamptonshire. I guess what I was really saying was that to go once is a great experience but to visit over and over again would spoil it for me as it would become less special. Yes a great time in Gods Country as you say. Thanks for watching.
