Photography Student VS Pro Photographer 

Y’all are missing a keyword here: student. What do students do? They learn. She’s complimenting her while giving critiques as a professional.

Maha shoots like a film photographer, I feel like that’s what she is at heart. You can tell when she keeps the model still for longer periods of time

You should do this more to help new photographers and new models too.

I think it is about post-editing as well.

Would've been nice to compare notes at the end, grabbing the best set of photo's from both photographers and discuss why they made certain descisions and what they were going for both technically and aesthetically.

Maha has schooling and Jess has experience. Both are valid ways to learn. I wouldn't say Maha's are worse in any way. I actually like most of hers way more. It's a style choice more than anything.

I have watched all your RU-vid videos and I love them. I'm 15 years old and a beginner in photography, just like you were when you were at the start of your career. I look up to you. I could relate to you when you said that you took pictures of dry leaves and nature because you didn't have any model to shoot. You are an inspiration to me.

I love seeing Maha getting more vocal and more comfortable with the model as they're shooting. I love her little asides, gettin' sassy. I love how supportive Jess is with the flash. Love how good this whole shoot was, honestly. Just love the positive vibes all around.

"Are we ready for some arthritis?" Truest statement of all time. My wrists, hands, and knees are SHOT. I was a photographer for 20 years. I quit about 4 years ago. I really just can't do it anymore. But it was truly a dream job. If you can make a living by creating something... you are living the dream.

In my opinion, the outfit of the model doesn't go well with the place they are shooting in ...

In the first round I liked Jessica's photos more but in the second round i feel like Maha's photos stood out more. It was obvious she took and adapted advices from you and it made her better. Really good video Jessica!!!

I’d be doing the same thing as Maha. I’m introverted and don’t take portraits of models. Even tho it sounds fun but I’d rather stick to landscapes, city scapes, urban shots, and candid portraits while in the streets. I’ve had a canon t5i with a couple lenses for 6 years now lol. Photography is dang expensive.

Maha’s photos are more interesting, fresh, out of the box while Jessica is just “I’ve seen it before” kinda photos

Maha's images were more thought-out and she needed a lot fewer shots to get excellent ones. The fact that she didn't shoot portraits often is pretty mind-blowing considering how well she did. The image with the hand shadowing the face was jaw-dropping. As a former professional photographer, I prefer fast primes over the 24-70 2.8 (which I own) hands down - especially for full body shots. Headshots are beautiful with the 24-70 but I always shot those at 70mm when possible to avoid lens distortion. I also hate the flat on-camera flash. A reflector would have been so much more flattering, or off-camera flash. An urban setting would have been really cool for this shoot.

There are people who don't have a photography classes or not a pro but their shots are awesome because their eyes are gifted.

I really liked how Maha kind of learned from Jessica by watching her, I think her second round of pictures were a lot better and we're super beautiful.

i honestly dont understand why people are bothered by the concept of this video :/ saw someone say she should have done pro vs pro which she did already, people commented on the music choice in the background which was some silly some lofi. also left me super confused cuz the music was just fitting the moment. also people are mad that about it being pro vs student. but she gave her tips and advice. i dont get it because one of the best ways to learn is to see how someone else does it and then try and recreate that. plus i think we can all agree that she wasnt degrading her or embarrassing her in any way??????

5:53 I love speckled natural light. Getting organic patches of the light and shadow that still flatter the face or enhance the expression is the tricky part

Am I missing something? I would love to see all the photos on a blog or something. I thought at the end of the video there would be a photoreel comparing the two.

Someone should make a video where you help beginner photographers learn how to guide models, be confident behind a camera, and tips on shots versus just a challenge where no one learns anything.

A really cool challenge would be to see you do different styles of photography, like documentary or street photography (not the ones when you ask for portraits) for example :)

Jessica's and Maha's shots with the flash still look like a natural light shot. 😍 I use both natural light and flash, and I also like it when flash photos look natural.

I think it would be interesting for you and her to go over the photos afterward and compare to see what changes you would make as a professional. Comparing the differences is interesting to me and also I think it would be good to learn from that comparison too- I lot of my photos end up looking like the student photographers photos and I don’t know why

Jessica, this was one of your best videos. You were working two delightful young ladies, each of whom were quite intelligent in their approach and serious about doing their best. Good luck to all three of you.

So I have to say I liked the first girls pictures better. The professional photographer cut off the elbow, she underexposed and had scattered light in her images. The first girls though her direction was not as on point had good lighting, great poses and overall I just liked those pictures better

We should give more love to Jessica! Definitely deserves more subscribers and likes. Some self claimed photographers on RU-vid just overated and most of photos just preset, Lightroom and photoshop tricks. Cannot stand!!! Please call yourself as a digital artist not a photographer.

Strangely, I'm more introverted yet I enjoy taking pictures of people !! I got to overcome my awkwardness though. 17 atm and idk where life will take me, still deciding whether or not I should go to school for photography or for something else but you inspire me Jessica! "Mixed media" is being used here as a euphemism for "collage". Be proud of what you do, that confidence is the main difference between the two photographers. Models are at ease when they are being directed.

I think Maha did a great job at choosing the poses and the view behind and Jessica did a great job at choosing the best light. If Maha's photos had the same lights/shadows I would choose her photos because they are more interesting

"someone who has barely any experience in photography VS Pro Photographer" As a nearly graduated photography student myself, I couldn't help but wonder what this video was supposed to show. like ok cool... you're more professional, you know what you want in your images and know your gear very well, whereas she was struggling with directions and handling the camera, making mistakes like anyone learning photography would. Chill lofi beats while you shoot and basically Benny Hill show theme while Maha was shooting... that's just straight up mean. Like other people have commented as well: This should have been thought through better, instead of showing off against an inexperienced and insecure student. You even said it yourself that she was very insecure.

I always wondered about this but where do you get the clothes for the shoots? The dress here is so cool!

Tbh the biggeste difference is the color grading at the end. The first "pro" shots were highly edited in LR and Photoshop. Thats the difference.

I assumed this video would be you, as the pro photographer showing “dos and donts” that would set a pro apart from a student. I did not however think it would be you literally putting yourself up against a student who clearly from the get go felt insecure because obviously you’re going to “win”. Ouch. This should have been thought through better.

Great job by both of them. Photography isnt just gear or knowledge based, the creativity and style of the photographer play a big part as well

This was fun to watch. I've never done portrait shots, but I felt like I learned a lot from watching yall and I want to try it out. To expose the sky and the model, you should expose for both in separate shots and layer them together in photoshop. Use a tripod and a very still model

Jessica came across a bit too arrogant and a bit up herself in this video. Both had some cracking shots, but Maha's B&W photo was fantastic, let's be honest.

I think the location is giving senior portraits energy for sure lol. Also, post editing really does make a huge difference in the final result

So cool. When I first started about 45 years ago I did a lot of time-consuming setup, although it was then about 90% a hobby, with about 5% paid and 5% professional and related learning. I worried about the time spent, the film costs, the development time... Every shot had to be a lot more planned. After about 10 years I no longer had concerns as it was much more creative, and the money supported the costs without issue. I started to get a bit of a voice, and realized how far I had to go (and still have to, even decades later). After another decade of shooting (in the late-90’s to maybe 2010, the challenge became staying creative, and I started focusing mainly on high-end portraiture for wealthy family, estate photos etc using everything from 35mm to medium and large format. The money was good, although I only shot maybe 15 hours a week. During the last decade plus it has become more about fun and trying new things, and digital cameras have been a major part of that- and especially mirrorless. Most importantly, the tools have progressed so far since the late-80’s. I know people say the gear and tools don’t matter, and while that may be the case for some types of shooters, subjects and styles of photography, I feel that the new post options alone has exploded the creative possibilities. I no longer have to use a bunch of lighting and related gear to craft so heavily during acquisition; and instead, can decide in post where I want to take and tweak things- far beyond what we used to do in the 70’s - 90’s in the dark room. I feel we are entering a new era of acquisition and post all over again, where any inherent technical or related limitations will no longer be the major issue, but rather, what creative composition, subject and post ideas you have. Most cameras have advanced to the point where lens choices and digital post are the major factors now. For me, this is wonderful, as I have so much I need to explore and learn still, and being able to do this so easily is amazingly engaging and fun- and the fact that there are no longer chemicals and hundreds of pounds of supporting gear, make it that much better!

You might have already done something like this before, but I think instead of something like this that could come across as “look how good I am compared to this student” to some, perhaps a challenge along the lines of this but the pro gets an entry level camera with a kit lens, and the student gets a high end camera with a top of the line portrait lens would be a more interesting video. I didn’t read into it like this, but I can see how many might see this video as quite egotistical.
