Thanks so much for highlighting this new feature, super useful to have the mouse over previews. A few limitations I’ve noticed: 1. Blendif adjustments don’t take on the presets; 2) solid fill layers aren’t allowed. A few workarounds I’ve implemented: if you want a solid fill, use a gradient map (allowed for preset) and make both end colors the same. And if you wanted, say, a solid color added to just highlights (like you’d do with Blendif), make the low end a 50% gray (RGB 128,128,128) and the high end your highlight color of choice.
I wonder how hard it would have been for Adobe to include 'import presets' in the 'Your presets' menu instead of having to jump to the hamburger menu. This would be a good usability improvement. Thanks Matt for this video. It is one of the better explanations I have seen for this new feature. Clear and to the point.
Matt - thanks for a great tutorial - one thing which I believe could help others is, as you did in this case, including the relevant update date in the filename. I appreciate that file managers normally have the date of creation, but if one restores from a backup the wrong 'creation' date is created. Once again, thanks for your courses & tutorials, they have been in great help.
I'm glad they added this, it's good to know that you can create your own "layer" presets. Thanks for making this video Matt! And for anyone who might read my comment, I can highly recommend Matt's Photoshop How To course. I have 7 of Matt's courses, and I've been completely satisified with them all and he's a great instructor (and no, Matt did not compensate me for saying this). 😎
Thanks, Matt - that's a really informative demonstration. I'm not sure that I can personally see any use cases for this feature, but it may help Adobe bring in some new users. It is interesting to speculate as to what their product development strategies might be for PS and LR. Clearly, they need to compete with some of the very powerful picture adjustment tools now available (at no extra cost!) on smartphones to grow their user base and continue to meet the needs of sophisticated longer-term 'prosumers' and professionals. Can I ask if you're making much use of the 'Generative AI' features? I find they are quite helpful for increasing the canvas size in a convincing way and for quickly removing background distractions that I would previously have had to clone out, but not anything more than that. I wonder where Adobe goes from here...
I use it mostly for distraction removal. But if you're Adobe you struck gold. PS is the program where people manipulate images and now you have Gen Fill in there to make it even easier. Not everyone is a photographer, so Gen Fill offers infinite uses for people that create and edit images.
Hi Matt. Nice discussion. This seems pretty close to the concept of Profiles on ACR/LR and LUTs in PS, but unlike those, we get the ability to modify the layers of the adjustments. Am I seeing this correctly. Best, Doug
Hi Doug. In a way. Profiles and Luts are more stylistic in nature and work on the raw file. Adjustment Layers would only work once you're in PS and I would argue that most of those adjustments should be done first. A photographer could very well go a year and never use an Adjustment Layer in Photoshop because they're doing this work in LR / ACR. They have little use for people that do most of their work in the raw editor. However, for people that don't, then being able to save the presets can save time from adding each adjustment layer separately. Just different workflows. Neither is right or wrong (though I would always side with the person that does their work in the raw editor vs using adj layers in PS as a better workflow).
