Well done.. Can I use Stand for like Mean.. for examplo.. - Do not forget what Steve Jobs Stood for Apple -- Do not forget what Steve Jobs meant to Apple. - What My Father meant to me ------ What My Father Stood For me. Tansks a lot..
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 лет назад
Actually no, this doesn't work, although it is close. You could say: 'Do not forget what Steve Jobs stood for' but in this case it means what he himself stood for, not necessarily what he meant for Apple. Same thing in your second example. 'What my father stood for' would mean 'the beliefs that my father had'.

Thank you for lesson. May I ask you question - what does means the sentence?: 1.You should stand in with president. 2.Will his story stand up in court?
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 лет назад
Great questions! 1. It sounds like it means 'support' the president although this would not be usual 2. Will his story 'hold up' or 'remain effective or valid or true' in court.
@olegmanpo3629
@olegmanpo3629 7 лет назад
Thank f lot. Once more question - To stand out for my claims. Is it right? Does it mean " insist"?
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 лет назад
Hmm...not sure what you're trying to say here. Possibly 'stand up for my rights' which would mean to act in support of your rights. Or maybe 'stand out against something' which means to be opposed to something.
@olegmanpo3629
@olegmanpo3629 7 лет назад
I found it in some dictionary and didnt understand it. There was a few more examples: 1. He stood out for the better terms. 2. To stand out the storm. 3. They are standing out for the revision of the charter.
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 7 лет назад
Aha. Got it. In this case: 1. He held out for better terms 2. To wait out the storm. 3. They are maintaining their support for the revision of the charter.

@mapleleafesl6162

It's a Bible reference. The sheep means 'the good' and the goats mean 'the bad'. So, it means 'separate the good from the bad'.
