Well, if you had a spacecraft with an engine at each end, and use the second engine to decelerate from mid-trip on, then inside your spaceship your ceilings become your new floors. It may end up being more economical to just flip the ship, rather than duplicate all the furniture.
@danii7584
@danii7584 11 месяцев назад
not to mention that this second engine would be better used as additional thrust together with the original one, or not at all due to it being dead mass half of the time which slows acceleration. the halfway flip seems like the best solution.

Also, if flip and burn is good enough for NASA, it’s good enough for The Expanse.

@@danii7584 Yeah having 2 engines like that would seem like a massive waste for anything other than maybe redudancy. Other than that it's just extra unnecesary mass.

@@TheArrowedKnee absolutely. even redundancy would be questionable, because you have to set that mass into motion and thereby need more "fuel", so the cost for this redundancy would be too high. all hail the flip and burn! :)

Expanse loves youtubers and reactors. They literally named a bit character after Rana from "The Normies" confirmed from the director. The writers would have reaction channels on in the background in the writers room.

So when the show was cancelled in May 2018 during the airing of S3 it was actually the fans that banded together (in support of the actors ) to live stream the rest of the season, get the live viewing numbers up, and the fans flew a banner over Amazon headquarters after a fund raising effort worked in 24 hours. (#SaveTheExpanse banner). The fans also used a weather balloon to take a little Roci model into the upper atmosphere ("outer space!"). so yes the actors LOVE the show (see Ty and That Guy podcast running for over two years now) but it was the fans coming together to save the show which was crazy and incredible. We are the Screaming Firehawks.

8:20 Actually, having engines both at the front and the stern of a spaceship doesn't makes sense in expanse at all.. You need to remember, that you actually get gravity from the engine thrust. So if you just would reverse thrust, suddenly all your stuff would be upside down.... Which might be ok for some cargo ... but i bet, even the hardest beltaloda wouldn't be able to stomach that for long.. ;)
@DavidMuri-rm4ym
@DavidMuri-rm4ym 7 месяцев назад
Yeah and also let's not forget that if you wanted to turn on the reverse thrusters then before you even reach the halfway point to your destination you would have to get all the way from the engine room at the back of the ship then run all the way to the engine rooms of the reverse thrusters and tell the engine crew at the back of the ship By Radio within the ship to turn off of the engine at the back of the ship so that they can turn on the reverse thrusters which is hardly ideal. 😅😅😅😂😂😂

The "flip and burn" concept was not first conceived by the authors of The Expanse. I first read about it 1965 in the Robert Heinlein novel "Have Space Suit-Will Travel" that itself had been written in 1958. Heinlein was an engineer (with a Navy background) who had worked with early US space engineers of the day.

The idea of fitting an engine on either end of a craft and not flipping over is a terrible idea simply because think of the orientation and direction of force inside the ship. By flipping the ship and only applying force from one end you can have the concept of a ceiling and a floor in the orientation and layout of the ship meaning that you can also have tables and countertops and ergonomics that are consistent with a planetary gravity type environment. If half the time the perceived force of gravity is coming from above you then how do you orient or layout things like chairs control panels, sleeping surfaces etc. Virtually every human interactive surface would need to be on some sort of gimble so it can reorient based on the direction of the force relative to the ship. By having one engine located at one end then you have a consistent concept of up and down when the engine applies force.

An interesting thing I heard about a possible explanation (admittedly, almost certainly retroactive) for the sound in space and manoeuvring of spacecraft in Star Wars was it being set in a universe a luminiferous aether of some kind, mostly because of a few sci fi gadgets and parts including the word aether, like I think a ship is described as having an aetherium rudder and many other mentions of rudders in general
@TheDarkwater78
@TheDarkwater78 11 месяцев назад
The concept of sphere-shaped spaceships is not new. Most bigger ships of the Terranian Empire in the Perry Rhodan Universe are of this ship. It is stated that this would be the form which is most resistant to any forces from outside. They have a thruster belt around the meridian so they never have to rotate the ship more than 90°.

you can have a sphere with a ring around it. the sphere can have a pipe around it with 6 holes and the ring covering it that has only has 2 holes so at any time, only two holes are open and 4 closed by the ring. each hole connected to engine and used as thrust exit. spining the ring would cover 4 holes and open other 2 depending in what direction you need thrust. easy :)
@autdelux
@autdelux 10 месяцев назад
how exactly would a second engine be more efficient than just rotate the spaceship? efficiency will always be important and the comfort of 1 less turn in space will never outweigh the cost another engine would have.

Well isn’t with warp you’re moving space around you rather than the ship, so if you’re creating a warp bubble would you even feel the effects of speed? You should do a vid on that and how a Mexican physicist accidentally discovered a warp bubble.
@madux42
@madux42 11 месяцев назад
It would be quite a stupid idea to have engines on both ends instead of just doing a flip&burn with the ship. First, it would be a waste of money, ressources, and the ship's interior space as there is really no need for this. Second, everything in the ship would have to be designed to be accessible from both sides, as the moment you change thrust to the "front" engine, the ceiling would become the floor and everything would be upside-down. That all really wouldn't make much sense as you can just turn around the ship instead, so the floor will always be the direction to the engine.
@DavidMuri-rm4ym
@DavidMuri-rm4ym 7 месяцев назад
Of course! And that's not without taking into account the time you would need to run all the way from the engine room at the back of the ship to the reverse thrusters engine rooms, and using radio communication within the ship to let the crew at the engine room at the back of the ship know when to turn off the engine in the engine room at the back of the ship so adding this complication before you even reach the halfway point to your destination almost all the crew in the engine room at the back of the ship will need to run all the way to the engine rooms of the reverse thrusters then contact the crew that still in the engine room at the back of the ship to turn off their engine so that they can turn on the reverse thrusters so yeah also this would make the ship less aerodynamic meaning you would have to waste way more money on the ship's fuel then you would by just building the ship with one engine at the back of the ship making the ship even more expensive so yeah tons of complications! 😅😅😅😅😅😅

I would say, of course there is speculation in terms of gravity effects on the body (because I don't think there is yet a colony on an asteroid or mars), but I think its a best guess situation based on current science which a lot of the show is in general. In 30/40 years we might think this is stupid! and I know nothing about physics! but to me it all makes sense! lol

Designed by a group of obnoxious elitist "nerds" like Spacedock that can't stop jerking themselves off about how much better their ideas about sci-fi are (Dude has an entire video whining about alien ships looking alien and non-human). The ships look decent until you know the slightest bit about how warships like that would need to function. Covering your ship in volatile engines is idiotic, and a massive fragile rotating disk at the center of your warship is nonsensical at best. Reverse thrusters are a waste of space and weight in even slightly realistic settings, without even getting into the risks. Also his bait and switch of promising The Sojourn would be free and then changing it after he met his Kickstarter goals, and only updating people about the change in an obscure update post that only a literal handful of people saw. They actually made agreements with groups they partnered to release them on RU-vid alongside other but The Sojourn reneged on it without telling them and. One group was The Templin Institute. They desperately wanted to copy Battlestar and The Expanse and failed. Several of their ship designs are even blatant copies or ripoffs of other series.

Tthis is explained in more detailed in both show and book (minor spoiler): the ring slows the largest object passing through, like a ship, not what is contained in the object, like the pilot or any stray items. This means the ship stops dead in its tracks while the pilot retains his inertia and gets torn apart
@danii7584
@danii7584 11 месяцев назад
@@vibaj16 how would it apply? everything gets stopped equally, but the ship is robust enough to handle to sudden stop, whereas the human body is not. and even the ship has damage now, probably. they even make it a point in the books that you can't escape a torpedo since it can accelerate faster than a ship because it isn't limited by the well being of living beings inside of it.
@danii7584
@danii7584 11 месяцев назад
@@ill3260 is it? I read the series twice and can't remember something like that. and also it would be questionable considering that at some point projectiles are stopped inside. but feel free to post a reference. one might make the argument that the tip of the ship reached the zone and stopped. what exactly is the argument here? that the zone stopped the ship non-violently? and that the ship and its pilot act as one mass and should be stopped the same non-violent way?

The expanse after season 2 becomes real fking boring, I would've canceled it myself at that point (stopped watching in season 4). While great shows like Stargate Universe didn't go past season 2 and this one that had immense potential went off course and it's still founded... it is what it is, man.. @you end up season 2 opening up multitude of gates with immeasurably enthusiastic potential to discover new worlds and in season 3 they give us glowing worms in a cave world. Dafuk... and it doesn't get any better in season 4. They fcked it up. @I actually enjoyed Dark Matter more but that one also started to go a ride and got canceled, as one should if quality is not mentained, let alone risen. I still regret Stargate U being canceled, that one opened up a lot of immense potential with season 2, it was the equivalent of canceling Expanse after season 2. Ret@ard move.😪 @scientific accuracy has zero value without a proper story. A show is 90% as good as it's story, that's all there is to it.

@@Gabriel-br4qe Nope. Amazon was just the distributor. They had nothing to do with production. Alcon Entertainment owns the rights and was the production company for the entire run of the show. "That's why the last season was shorter and felt so rushed, it's because they put pressure on the showrunners to just end it." That's not at all what happened. Ty Franck has talked about it extensively on Ty and That Guy. It was simply a budget decision. He said they could have either made 10 episodes, but not have the budget to go all out and do exactly what they want, or do less episodes and be able to do what they wanted. There's a lot of space battle scenes in the season and all the CGI work is expensive.
