This is Part 1 of 2 Video Lectures on Cellular Respiration by Professor Fink. In this Video Lecture, Professor Fink describes the purpose and overall process of Cellular Respiration, including Anaerobic Respiration and Aerobic Respiration of sugars. The Lecture includes Glycolysis, Fermentation, and Aerobic Respiration (including Transition Reaction, Krebs Citric Acid Cycle and the Electron Transport Chain). Reference is made to oxidation of sugars, pyruvate, lactic acid, ATP, O2 Debt, NAD, FAD, acetyl-CoA, Oxidative Phosphorylation, Chemiosmotic Model, and mitochondria.
Check-out professor fink's web-site for additional resources in Biology, Anatomy, Physiology & Pharmacology: www.professorfink.com

really pure water, such as triple distilled water, improves oxygen at the cellular level?
@codyrountree1667
@codyrountree1667 6 лет назад
Hey Professor Fink. I am about 32 minutes in. So with build up of lactic acid contributing to muscle fatigue and cramping, would cardio actually correlate to increased Max strength potential. I can see it correlating to endurance weight training 8-20 reps, but would this benefit a one rep max via supplying more oxygen? I believe one rep maxes only use anerobic respiration, so im just confused on the correlation if there is one. I know Creatine is supposed to address this, and give more ATP to fuel a higher one rep max.
@professorfink
@professorfink 6 лет назад
Hi Cody. You are correct in your thinking. Cardio exercise increases endurance necessary for extended activity. Brief exercise (ie; few "reps") is NOT affected by cardio exercise, but more by "power " (strength) training.

Thank you for these videos! I'm watching them as a review before PA school this fall. Quick correction I have noticed that professor Fink numerous times refers to PAs as physician's assistants. There is actually no apostrophe in the title. Common mistake, but one most physician assistants cringe when they hear.

Thanks for this, by far the best presentation of this complex subject. A question - can the brain get energy from any other source besides glucose?
@professorfink
@professorfink 7 лет назад
The brain typically gets most of its energy from oxygen-dependent metabolism of glucose (i.e., blood sugar), but ketones provide a major alternative source, together with contributions from medium chain fatty acids (caprylic and heptanoic acids), lactate, acetate, and possibly amino acids. You can "google" the subject. Also, here is one short article: www.dana.org/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=114320

Can u plz explain one thing... If lactic acid turns back to pyruvate on the availability of the oxygen, why do we usually feel the muscle cramps next day after a strenuous exercise?
@professorfink
@professorfink 6 лет назад
Good Question! Lactic acid is only one of many factors that contribute to cramping & fatigue in muscle. A vigorous muscle work-out causes "micro-tears" in the muscle that causes muscle "aches" (pain) & requires a few days to repair & fully heal. In addition, muscle activity stimulates increased protein synthesis (of actin & myosin, myoglobin, etc.) in the muscle cells.
