This is a great exercise for lower limb stability. Whenever you injury a joint, you lose a bit of the joint's stability. This is because stability is partly maintained by the soft tissue structures surrounding the joint such as the ligaments and tendons. Injury to these structures means they will lose some of their ability to perform their function. Any exercise that challenges stability will start to reactivate these soft tissue structures and as a result balance, or proprioception if you want to use the fancy term, will improve. Make sure when doing this exercise that you focus on form. You will work the soft tissue structures the hardest in terms of balance, when you focus most on maintaining good alignment.
