What a great time to grow up. When I was a kid I taught myself BASIC on a TRS-80 and played with transistors, flip flops, and 555s. I think I still have an 8080a in a box somewhere. But I would have forgot all that to play with a Raspberry Pi. (Well, at the time so would the rest of the world!)

The more basic design allowed them to give away the first batch. It has the distinction of being the first computer to be given away... or maybe it was hidden in the £6 cover cost. Anyway, I'm waiting to see who will be first to include a computer for free inside a box of corn flakes.
@deldarel
@deldarel 7 лет назад
oh, I'm not saying that the original pi zero is a mistake. Far from it. It's just way less practical without the bluetooth and wifi for DIY projects. That first pi zero was good to test the market and as proof of concept for 'extremely cheap computers'. Much like the Raspberry Pi A against the Raspberry Pi B+ where the B+ is the far more practical version of the A but we wouldn't have gotten to the B+ if it wasn't for the A first.

Looking forward to more of the LattePanda. I wish you would be able to show in full detail a typical setup for use as a standalone desktop PC for some online work. I would like to get one rather than buying a regular "tower PC". Whenever a minimal device is introduced, somebody always starts demanding more. In this case, it would be nice if the Pi 0W had more memory; 512's a bit of a limitation. (It's also a pity that it's not possible to add memory to the Pi. (Swap can help, if you don't mind the performance hit,)

Huh, looks like they bothered to include a complete pad for a u.fl connector on the Zero W unlike the half pad on the Pi3, nifty! Could actually install a decent little external antenna on your project if you liked. I hope some day in the future they come out with a full fledged Pi2/3 in a similar form factor, that could make for some interestingly tiny Retropie/HTPC builds. But I figure they want to keep it flat on the back like they have for a reason. Edit: Unless Asus or somebody provides drivers for the Tinkerboard's GPU it'll be doomed to so-so support like the Odroid, those Mali GPUs always keep these "Pi-Killers" from actually doing decently.

I was under the impression that the original Pi Zero targeted integrated hardware more than the beginner "Hello World" community. I see a lot of simple projects like gaming, Kody, and basic radio controlled toys, but where are the advanced projects? I'm curious about real time audio processing with FFT, electrical engineering lab hardware/tools, robotics with complex degrees of freedom, or prototype automation. Is there a place that guides people through these types of projects?

When you compared the Zero W against the CHIP, it's obvious the Zero W is the better computer. The CHIP launching without HDMI is a major downside in my opinion and it's not worth the extra $10-$15 cost for the HDMI add on. Plus you have to use ALL the GPIO pins (yes I know you can solder on more pins on the HDMI attachment, but you shouldn't have to do that).
@TheNZJester

Is there an option to clip on something like a SMA to U.FL lead for adding a bigger wifi antenna? People could buy one of those dummy CCTV cameras and install the new Pi Zero in it with camera attachment. Turn the dummy camera into a smart IP camera either fixed or with some servos to allow it to look around.

@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers 7 лет назад
In theory the Pi Zero (W) can play 1080p 60fps. In practice I doubt that it would (always) work. RU-vid in particular I think would struggle at that resolution due to the lack of RAM for buffering.
@MrAwwwwYeahhhh
@MrAwwwwYeahhhh 7 лет назад

@DanA-st2ed 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. I have heard about this tech where you can stream games from a more powerful rig. I am wondering if I could use the zeroW to stream linux steam games to over wifi and use the HDMI to drive the display @ 1080/60fps.
@D00MLOORD
@D00MLOORD 7 лет назад
I really doubt that. I've been using Steam In-Home Streaming, and it works excellent on pretty much anything, as long as it got a good connection over ethernet or wifi, AND hardware h.264 decoding. Therin lies the problem. The Pi 3 can make it work, but only at 1080p30 or 720p60, which sadly makes the Zero a complete no go. Maybe next generation ;)
@D00MLOORD
@D00MLOORD 7 лет назад
But if you want the best Stream-box you really should go with the Tinker Board, since it have a significantly stronger GPU and both hardware decoding for h.264 and h.265, both capable of 4k rather than 1080p on the Pi 3, AND gigabit ethernet.

' ... but the Pi Zero W will be in stock! ' 3 months after this video stock was still problematic and when I bought one in June I paid 25 usd at the cheapest retailer. I could have gotten my hands on it earlier, but I was hoping for a cheaper Zero. Even now stock is problematic. They are for sale, but you can't just buy a couple. Just like the previous models the whole 'super cheap pc' promise wasn't lived up to unless you lived in the right country. At least not for a long time. I can't really fault them too much considering how they run the foundation, it's not like they're Coca Cola and they can get everything up and running globally instantly, but it was a real bummer for a lot of people. (The previous models were sold here, but they wouldn't sell the official adapters, cables and some other peripherals and documentation on working SD cards was unreliable, so you'd spend a lot of time and money troubleshooting and trying different adapters, cables and SD-cards getting everything to work.)

You know what’s so cool about the raspberry pi? You can, for an additional $25 dollars, set up an iPad through some app called Screens as a monitor by ssh and then connect an iPhone to the iPad for trackpad. Then add a Bluetooth keyboard and boom, you just turned an iPad into a desktop using a computer that actually has a decent operating system.
