I used this information to keep a male child from entering school before the age of 7. He has developed very well in the natural maturation process and has done well in school work. If he had entered the school process before 7, I believe he would have struggled and not done as well. Thank you Jean Piaget.

Wow! That's a very interesting insight, Rod. Understanding child development and psychology made you play it smart. I won't be surprised if his progress is faster now.

can i ask what is the significance of object permanence? e.g. if they know that their parents still exist even though they do not see them, does it give the toddler assurance?
@MisterSimplify

Hi Moseleen. Yes it does. They understand that people can go out of sight or out of the house and later return. They realise from experience that people don't 'get deleted' if they aren't around.

Interesting video. I feel like you've slightly misconstrued Piaget's theory in your criticisms section. It appears to me that he argues the stages are flexible in timeframe. It didn't appear to me, when reading his original work, that it could be directed as a criticism. If anything I would say its one facet that makes his theory a strong one.
@MisterSimplify
@MisterSimplify 3 года назад
Hi Romulan. I understand what you mean. This point has however been debated as a critique in a few studies I've come across. So I used it as a popular criticism pointer. If you want to explore this further, here are a couple of papers quoting this criticism are as follows: Schaffer, HR. (2004). Introduction to Child Psychology. Oxford, UK: Oxford University. Smith, PK., Cowie, H., Blades, M. (2003). Understanding Children's development (4th Ed.). Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

My 7 year said he'd put the eye on the back of his head so he could see behind him. I wonder what determines how quickly kids develop this way.

That's a healthy level of emotional maturity and logic. It's logical to identify a blind spot in the body, and wish for an aid to support that. Most approaches in psychology attribute intellectual and emotional development to the early years of an individual's life and a healthy social environment. So, it seems your kid's started well! 🙂

While it is true relative poverty can have an impact on cognitive development, we need to be careful we don't fall into an automatic Critical Group Theory type of thinking. I have worked with both underprivileged and street children who have had to live by their wits; and with the conspicuously over- privileged children of the upper 0.1%, where the family money has protected them from the realities of existence. Challenge, hardship, and necessity are not just the Mother of invention, but apparently of cognitive maturity as well. I personally seen a telling number of poor 10 year olds who are so cognitively sharp they can problem-solve and out-think many adults. I have also met a telling number of children from rich families where wealth is had a retarding effect on their cognitive development. Wealth CAN produce opportunities. But it can also reduce necessity.

That's why developmental and epigenetic psychologists also recognize the value in Erik Erikson's Pysco-social Stages of Development. There are recent and groundbreaking advances during the past decade in detecting certain genetic allelles that, in a complex manner, are activated depending on how adverse their environment is. My opinion is that, while not perfect, Erikson's stages of Psycho-social development account for the variability in the cognitive-emotional development of a balanced spectrum of empathy vs. psychopathy/sociopathy. The environment provides a lot more to the equation than once thought. The future of psychology, in my opinion, lies in the hybridization of disciplines, what I term as epigenetic neuropsychology.
