When you think you are going to rehearse: Mozart "Piano concerto nº 27, KV 595" and it turns out that both, the orchestra and the conductor, have the scores of Rachmaninoff "Piano concerto nº 2" !!!!!!!!!
The office of the representative of the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, was wrong about which concerto she was going to rehearse and, next day, to perform.
She was lucky because, as on that same tour, she was playing, among others, Rachmaninoff's No. 2, the change, although unexpected, was not traumatic!
Alicia de Larrocha (1923-2009), piano
Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, (1938-2009)
Charles Wendelken-Wilson (1938-2009) conductor
Rehearsal: April 19, 1983 - Dayton (Ohio) USA
Concert: April 20 and 21, 1983

Alicia de Larrocha could play EVERYTHING…from Bach, Scarlatti and Baroque composers through the Romantics, as well as French and Spanish composers and 20th-century music. She plays Rachmaninov as if she possesses a slav soul, the highest compliment I can think of!

I see just the Argerich's technique and approach, but much earlier than Argerich. She has a rarely precious sound, so rarely met. And Pires' viral accident with the wrong concerto, so much earlier. Everything I find from de Larrocha is simply mindblowing, the Chaconne is unsurpassed, and what's to be said of Albeniz... I hope there are other videos to see more, the world needs to know this, needs to know this kind of musicienship and pianism once existed. Thank you for sharing this with us, really!

Alicia de Larrocha was wonderful in every way. I liked her playing of every composer - and she was so humble!

I heard Mme. de Larrocha four times in person, in recital…I wish I could have heard her play a concerto! I have wonderful recordings of her playing the Chopin F minor, the Beethoven "Emperor", as well as several Mozart concerti, but one of my favourites is her recording of Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain", the greatest recording of that work I think I have ever heard!

I fell in love with Alicia de Larrocha the first time I heard her play Sanctify Us By Thy Goodness. She's one of my most favourite piano prodigies. Thanks for sharing this precious gem of a clip.

You don't mean this: "The office of the representative of the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, was wrong to indicate what concert she was going to rehearse and, next day, to perform." To say "they were wrong to indicate" means they made an ethical mistake. For example, we might say, "They were wrong to take the donations and spend them on luxury items." What you mean is "They were wrong about which concerto she was going to rehearse. She's a genius, whatever the circumstances.

Yes, but the day of Maria Joao Pires was worst... It was in front of the audience!! At least, to AdL happened the day of the rehearsal 😅

Here on RU-vid you can find the video of what happened that day with Maria Joao Pires. The look of desolation and horror on her face was incredible. I think she had not played that concert for several months, but incredibly she was able to play it without making a mistake.

.....Not just this one, but all of the videos where people pretend they were playing a different concerto, feel fake just for the purpose of sensationalism, she is capable fo playing not just this two concertos, but many others, no need for this artificial stunt
@jamaicanpianistcomposer

I would like to preface this response by saying we as musicians (especially of the classical music industry) do not have time for creating anything sensational except within the parameters of us doing our utmost best to present the music to it's highest quality so what ever artificial stunt you're referring to does not apply. That being said, even when you have the pieces in our repertoire, when you have to perform a concerto that is 25-40 minutes long, it requires high levels of mental preparation for the task. So if you planned on playing one specific piece that you are physically and mentally zoned to play only to have a wench thrown in (i.e SIKE! different concerto), it interferes highly with our mental state of preparedness which as a chain reaction affects the physical capabilities to execute said change at the highest level. A great example of this is viewed here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UOUSFNgEy7c.html Even though he was to play both concertos he was mentally ready to perform one specifically in that moment and in the blink of an eye he had to be forced to re-calibrate to another massive feat. I say all this to say that these events do happen, as miscommunication do occur and rightfully so because we are not machines. Besides, instances of this nature are occurring several YEARS apart at a time i don't know why you are treating it like it's a perpetual trend of some sort. We don't have time for all that.

Artificial stunt?? This is as real as life itself! I was there with her and I attest that it happened. They were going to film the rehearsal for a CBS report and, on her schedule, was written that she was going to play Mozart K. 595. Your opinion shows that you do not know how AdL was like. She would never have allowed herself to participate in something with a sensational purpose !! She was already uncomfortable with the fact of being filmed and I assure you that the last thing she wanted to do was a show.

@@Cubanbearnyc This is not a question of opinion. This is a concrete fact. I was there and I witnessed the misunderstanding that occurred due to an error in the pianist's concert schedule provided by her agency. That's all.

@@lisilisin That sounds like a hysterical statement from a tyrant. My opinion is not shaken by a temper tantrum, which is shared by many others, I'm sure there are many fans like you, and I accept that.
