I've had covid for the past week and I gotta say it's absolutely terrible. How you managed to do this live stream is beyond me! Get well soon. I'm late to the show but going to view it now 😄

Glad you enjoyed it. The sound wasn't dialed in right today, but I managed to get through without collapsing - so there's that! Thanks for joining today!

Thanks Kris! The guitar wasn't up in the mix enough today. Wish I had the energy for a full sound check beforehand, but I just couldn't do it today. I updated my software yesterday and the level meters must read differently, because it all looked okay.

I can usually figure out what key it is, at least on basic major keys, but I have one question: How do I pick what notes to solo over the chords? Is there a simple answer to that? If it's a G chord, for instance, I know I can play the triad notes, and it will sound fine. In this Let it D tune, can I use any note in the D scale, over any chord? Or over the D chord, do I need to use the D scale notes, and over the G chord use the G scale notes, etc.? I've been messed up on this for quite some time....

Hi Dave. Great question. You're asking a very, very big question. The answer to it is trite. (You can play any note you want to over any chord.) Listen to the early jazz players like Charlie Christian or Django and you'll see any and every note is available. It's trite, but there's a point. I believe you're thinking about it the wrong way. Instead of thinking about (generally), "What notes can I play over any chord?" ask the question, "Over which chord should my melody line stop?" Let's take an example. Take the Sequence: G, D/F#, Em7, D, C (Think "The Weight" chorus). If you solo over it, you'll quickly see that there are only two important resting chords - the opening G and the ending C. So starting on the G is important to give the listener an understanding of a new stanza as well as the key of the song, which is G-major. And ending on a chord tone of C on beat 1 of the C works very well too. But pretty much any scale tone will do over the D/F#, Em7, and D because they're not stable. They're chords of movement. So play any scale tone over unstable chords. Over stable chords emphasize chord tones. One can extend this of course (E.g., play any tone over unstable chords), but this is an excellent start. One shouldn't take context out of music and turn it into a theoretical exercise. That's why learning melodies instead of scales is so powerful. (I totally understand the irony of my making this comment here ... but I don't *ALWAYS* want to swim upstream.)

After you have determined the key of a chord progression and therefore know what scale to play over diatonic chords, is there a guideline to know what other scales are available? I am thinking of something like the "Chord Scale Theory" which is helpful when playing the changes.

Nice intro.. but prerecorded drowns out your lead.

I can hear that in the replay. It's primarily for the 1st song, but I'll keep that in mind the next time I record. Didn't have the energy to do a full sound check this morning.

@@MarkZabel Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a critic. More to let you know if you didn't. Tbh, I didn't realize the live was over and that I was watching the recorded video. Feel better. COVID is a strange one. Effects everybody differently it seems these days. Especially us older folk. Always checking in on your videos even though I rarely play anymore. Arthritis issues in the thumb joints don't let it be enjoyable for me as much, but I still dabble. I still love the theory of it. I learned that way in the beginning and eventually after many years of trying to learn by ear instead, finally got to that point of understanding how feeling the notes makes playing so much more rewarding. Your process seems to emphasize both and you keep it simple.
