Hearing your explanation of tooth geometry has me looking at, and understanding more about the blades I use. I work more in metal than wood, and even so found this very helpful. It's given me a new enthusiasm for my old radial arm saw!

Awesome! It's a bit different for metal, but not dramatically. Tooth geometry still plays a huge part, just different kinds used.

Before I was able to set up my first shop I spent forever watching videos and reading blogs and magazines about woodworking and soaking up all the pro advice I could.... imagine my surprise when I bought my first table saw and after putting it together I flipped through the rest of the manual and there was a technique section. No joke, all the supposed "old pro trade secrets and tips" that I'd spent a year scouring for that folks acted like is stuff you need to take a class or spend tons of time researching for was literally in the box with my first saw. That and after a few times of having a tool for months (or years) and then noticing there's a little feature on it I'd missed the whole time that would've made so many jobs so much easier if I'd known it was there but I didn't even skim the manual because "I know how to use one of these.." ...yeah, now I make it a habit of at least giving them a flip through, especially the features/controls/techniques sections.

Hey! As A beginner woodworker, and having purchased mostly used saws, I've been using the blades that I have lying around or those that came with the saws. Your video prompted me to look critically at my blades and I find I'm using incorrect blades for my individual tasks. I will be visiting my local hardware store to purchase more correct blades. Thank you.

Amazingly informative! I have not seen such competent explanations about sawblades anywhere. Usually its a bunch of dufases rambling on about nothing with banjo music playing. I appreciate the explanation on the miter saw blades and the scoring, and WHY. Question: so the 24 tooth and 80 tooth ply/melamine blades are given, and then crosscuts should be done on a miter saw anyways. Given that, for just making unpolished stuff when in a hurry, would you recommend a 40 or 60 tooth combination blade (such as when a quick crosscut is needed!)

Just bought my first miter saw. Based on my circ and recip saws (nevermind countless other videos I've watched in doing research) I know the included blades are always garbage, so I bought a Diablo 80 tooth to go with it. I have some baseboards to cut and I'm building some closet shelving...and eventually a small deck. I'm hoping I made the right blade choice, and this vid is leading me to believe I did. I haven't opened it yet. Still thinking maybe I should've gotten the 100 because of the baseboards.

For 10 & 12 inch blades, get the Freud 92 to 100+ tooth and use it for about everything. Whether I'm cutting a 6x6 oak block on the miter saw, or aluminum slotted extrusion, that blade (Freud LU85R012) does it ALL! Rarely do I need a different blade. Now if I'm cutting certain woods, I use CMT blades. But the Freud, or even their less costly, Diablo series, are great. (Their router bits on the other hand... ouch. Avoid Diablo and go Freud or CMT. A piece of spinning carbide flying off a 18,000 rpm shaft is no fun.)

Yeah, it was right around 1985 when I bought my radial arm saw for about a quarter of what they retailed for. That old saw did the job of a miter saw/sliding miter saw and quite a few other operations such as molding head cutter. Very handy saw if you know what you're doing with it. I checked out this video cause I wanted to know what blade you recommended for it. I'm guessing that you'd say the same negative rake angle blade as for the miter saw, but then I guess I'll never know now will I?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 года назад
You're right, same blade with a negative rake that works on a sliding miter is good for radial arm saws. I meant to say that when I got to that part but forgot. They're super handy, I used one a lot when I worked at a Home Depot that would break down dimensional lumber for customers.

Because he is a moron sponsored by Home Depot. I have been using radial arm saws longer than he's been on this earth. (And I still have all my fingers) Use to use my Radial Arm saw as a Jobsite saw. Much better than anything they have on the market today. Love my saws, and my Radial Arm is my favorite because it is so versatile. Screw him and his "Warning Label" mentality.

Nice video. I have a question: Is it useful or overkill to have 2 circular saws, on with a special blade for ripping and one with a special blade for crosscutting, because i don't like swapping blades, making the circular saw screw dull. Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks in advance
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 10 месяцев назад
Unless you're changing the blade out multiple times a day, and using it every day, I wouldn't worry about any wear on that screw. And if that doesn't convince you, just buy another saw :) I'm a believer in dedicated blades, but it depends. If everything you're working with is construction grade stuff, it really doesn't matter. But if you're talking about switching between cross cutting a table slab from $2000 worth of material, to ripping a $300 board, to breaking down a $150 sheet of plywood. Then yeah, to me it's worth having dedicated blades that do the best work on each of those materials.

@YouCanMakeThisToo

Blades for laminates typically are good for aluminum. You're looking for high tooth count and preferably a TCG grind. Freud and Diablo used to have a blade for non-ferrous metals, I bet they still do.
@dwaynenero535
@dwaynenero535 4 года назад
Thanks for the advice. Your video was very helpful. I was wondering if I was using the wrong blade sometimes because some of my cuts felt like I was cutting through extremely dense wood. It would just take longer than I thought it should on both my table saw and my Miter saw. Watching some people cut on TV etc ... their blades and cutting movements just seem to be quicker and smoother (Like cutting through butter, as they say) While on my table saw just ripping a long piece of wood I am just pushing & pushing and have to jump to the other side to pull the wood through. It cuts clean but it's just a little frustrating sometimes. The same with my miter saw, sometimes cutting straight down it just feels like a heavy push down instead of just a quick smooth down & back up. So I will look for a lot of the things you mentioned. Blades with more teeth and the right angles right?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 года назад
If your saw is cutting extremely slow my first thought is you have a dull blade. If you're specifically struggling with ripping and the blade is sharp.. then you're probably cutting with a crosscut blade, and need a lower tooth rip blade, or a combination blade.

@cemarz
@cemarz 3 года назад
Yeah, that was an odd comment. If the label is worn off the blade is waaaay past dull. He does say that blades should be resharpened later in the video. Maybe he means by that point you should toss it becuase it's total tooth size is too small to bother with another resharpening??? Dunno. 3mm is the point in which a tooth may have indexing problems on resharpening machines (which are usually the exact same machine used to make a blade). You'd probably still have a long way to go in a blade when the lable is worn off.

Do angle grinders blades fit into circular and miter saws ?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 года назад
I think they both have a 5/8" arbor.. not sure. Can't say I'd recommend it either. Even if they fit there can be a big issue with RPM differences.

Even those shit Diablo blades can be sharpened a few times and good blades can be sharpened for years. Telling someone to throw a blade away if the label is worn off is idiotic.

True cabinet saws with the trunions mounted on the cabinet instead of on the table. Anything table mounted is just job site quality.

Good video, but my question is what kind of blade do I need to cut pine treated wood for my patio deck?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 года назад
I'd just get a general construction blade for whatever kind of saw you're using. The resin in pine and all the additives are going to toast the blade anyway.. and because of how wet it tends to be, high tooth count isn't going to be very beneficial because the wood is going to try to pinch the blade pretty quick, you want something fast cutting.

@@YouCanMakeThisToo So are you saying a 24T is better than a 60 T? I bought the 60T, but i can take back and exchange it?
@cemarz
@cemarz 3 года назад
Don't toss your blades becuase the label is worn. Take it to a sharpening service. They probably use the same machine to sharpen it that the manufacturer uses to make it. If it isn't worth sharpening they'll let you know. Diablo can 1000% be resharpened. They're only going to take like .15mm off of the tooth od and face. If you are worried a blade being used for the wrong job w/o the label then mark it with a sharpie. If it gets resharpened and that marking was washed away through the cleaning service then remark it.

Quick question, My circular saw came originally with a 185mm blade, can I use it with a 180mm blade too? Thanks

Smaller isn't a problem if the arbor fits.

Great presentation and information! However, you triggered me with the use of plastic straws...you could have just gone to McDonalds and purchased 18 soft drinks and gotten the paper straws, although I don't think they make paper straws with the flexible section...OK, I'm getting less triggered...

Fair, very sorry about that. Totally amateur mistake. The only saw noise is that short clip at the beginning, not a good start. Hopefully the information made up for those few seconds of bad audio.

@@arianadiego3709 No worries! Sorry if my reply was harsh, I'm really glad you pointed it out. I pride myself on the time I've put into getting better audio because volume jumping drives me bonkers too! Those clips were added and the audio was stripped.. and right before I finished I added the audio back but did not check the levels. I'm really glad you pointed it out, because it helps me remember to always go back and check every time that audio gets touched. I just commented about that being the only bit like that because if it did push you off the video, wanted you to realize the whole video would NOT be like that. thanks for the reminder and thanks for watching!
