Picking Pentatonics With Economy Picking

I considered myself a talented guitar player... Then I found Rick.

In my experience (at least with music in 4/4) alternate picking is normally slower but has less problems with accents, economy is faster but you must have more control and think about accents while you play (otherwse everything tends to have a triplets like sound)...I don't pay much attention to what I do while I play, if I am playing even notes per string I am obviously alternating, while if the number is odd I automatically switch to economy...

I wish you had gone into detail about the picking Strokes in your 'play Eric johnson' dvd....:(

Nice! I've tried something similar as an exercise, but on just two strings (usually the B and E), where I play a classic "box" form of four notes. Lets say, those are A and B on the B string and D and E on the E string, at the 10th and 12th frets respectively. I start with B on the B string at the 12 th fret using a downstroke, then econo pick downwards to the D on the E string 10th fret, followed by an upstroke to the E at the 12th fret and an econo upstroke to the A back on the B string, 10th fret. Rinse, lather, repeat, moving up or down the fretboard as/if desired. It requires a rapid turnaround, and so far I still can't do it as fast as I can with normal alternate picking and downward pick slanting, but I have to believe it's got some value as an exercise at least.
