Picking up the mini excavator from the auction yard-an ALMOST perfect trip

Are mini excavators dangerous?
We bought a one ton mini excavator, sight unseen, through an online auction seven hours from home. In previous videos, we show our experience with the online auctions, including the winning auction, and we prepare our single axle landscape trailer and add some key upgrades to handle this load. In this video, we make the seven hour drive, see the excavator for the first time, load it up and bring it home. We make a quick stop on the way home to view the solar eclipse through my welding mask. The trip went almost perfectly. As I’m backing the mini excavator down the trailer ramp, and struggling to move the controls lightly enough to make the crawling motion smooth, I learn the hard way that this unit is surprisingly top heavy.

And those jacks on the trailer worked out great.

Yes, those were surely worth the effort.

I was yelling at my computer screen NOOOO when you loaded it. Hoped you had learned after that. I keep my boom on the low side and bucket low as possible when on an incline. That way if it starts to tip the bucket will stop it. Good luck, hope you enjoy your new toy. Oh and today I picked up a whole pallet of mini excavator attachments from an auction 75 miles away.

I guess it took me two trips on that ramp to learn that lesson. Enjoy those new attachments! I'm shopping for those now, too, but the nearest auction this week is an 18 hour drive. I'll wait...maybe.

What a cliff hanger! Looks like the blade saved your ass. Glad you’re okay.

You are absolutely correct! That's the only thing that kept it from going all the way over.

I saw another vid where the guy turned it over fully onto its back loading a very similar trailer. Good you only went part way. I think the L12s are the better design I have seen. Have not bought one yet but still doing research. Have seen some people put hydraulic filters on them. By the way there is a screen filter INSIDE the hydraulic tank on this model. The general I have seen is tighten everything, change the vegetable engine oil soon and adjust the choke and gas cables, and check track tension. Let us know what the total price is with auction fees, and how you handled state sales tax. Have fun with your new toy.

Yes, this L12 has some upgrades that indicate the manufacturer has been paying attention to feedback on the forums from their earlier models. That is why I chose this specific model. The auction yard included their state and local sales tax on the invoice. Both the bid price and the extra fees were taxable. The total amount was just under US$4,900.

Glad you got one. Man, driving it up the ramp was a bit sketchy too. Looked like you were about to tip over backwards...

It definitely feels unstable even though that ramp is not so steep. Now I know to extend the boom out more instead of keeping it tucked in. I just about learned that the really hard way!

@@thePFOchannel I think the ramps on my big trailer are steeper than yours. I'd be pretty nervous going up/down with that thing. You did a great job of saving it.

I see guys loading them onto those dump trailers that are way higher. No thanks!

Dont laugh it will dig a hole. As you lurned these small machines can be dangerous if not paying attention. A hydraulic thum is a must for picking up think. A manual thum will do

Yes, but just paying attention isn't enough. This thing had my undivided attention as I nearly rolled it off the trailer backward. I need to learn how to use the boom as a counter-balance. I think that particular lesson is pretty well burned into my brain now, but what other mistake is waiting in the shadows? It'll be fun while learning!

@thePFOchannel it is easy with boom. Put it out and low. When taking off of a trailer. Have bucket close to ramp. Before hitting ground rase up a few inches. A easy thing to remember on blade. If infront of you. You push controls forward. If bade in rear you pull. When digging run motor 1/2 to 3/4. If to jumpy just ideal down a bit. It just take time to get use to machines.
