＜Summary＞

The setting is Han dynasty China.
A messenger from the emperor proceeds toward Baen because of an auspicious omen
displayed by an ancient tree in that remote village.
An elderly couple (an old man and old woman) protect the garden in Baen. They relate the
auspicious omen to the imperial messenger, showing him an orange tree that bore a large fruit
overnight.
As the messenger is about to leave to report this to the emperor, a voice calls from the ancient
tree: “Wait...” Hearing this, the old man says: “Then let us hold a banquet and wait,” and goes
further into the garden.
The old man soon turns into an aged hermit and, accompanied by his wife who now also turns
into an immortal, presents a fermented rice drink and fruit to dedicate to the emperor. Then,
the hermit taps the large orange fruit on the tree with his staff. The orange splits into three,
and fairy children appear. The aged hermit, the female immortal, and the children praise the
emperor, dance to celebrate him, and extol the emperor’s reign of abundance. Before long, the
aged hermit says it’s time to return home and throws his staff into the air. It immediately
changes into a blue dragon. The fairy children climb onto the blue dragon and return to their
magical land.

＜あらすじ＞
観世小次郎信光（1456-1516） 作
所は中国、漢の国の時代のお話。
巴園という片田舎の村の古木が、奇端を示しているということで、帝の勅使が巴園へと赴く。
巴園には園を守る老夫婦（翁・姥）がおり、勅使に奇端の様相を物語ると、
一夜に大きな実をなした橘を見せる。
勅使は帝へ報告に帰ろうとすると、古木の中から「待て……」と声が掛かる。
翁は、それでは酒宴を開き待ちましょうと園の奥へと立ち去る。
やがて翁は老仙人となり、仙女を伴い、甘酒と果実の実を帝へ捧げる。
そして持っていた杖で橘の実を叩くと三つに割れ、仙童達も現れる。
老仙人と仙女・仙童達は帝を讃え、舞を舞い、豊かな御代を讃えるが、
やがて帰ろうと老仙人の杖を虚空に投げれば、たちまち青龍へと変じ、
仙童達はその青龍に乗って仙境へと帰って行く。
