I have watched this so many times now as I rebuilt my carb. Thank you so much, really clear and helpful. saved me hours of reading and scratching my head!!
My choke pull-down unit isn’t working (diaphragm perished) and you cannot source another one for love nor money. Everyone is sold out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking maybe block off the tube to the unit then try do adjust the small Allen screw to get the choke flap to open slightly (3mm if possible) when cold. Anyone?
I'm about to rebuild my carb! I've never had a carbed vehicle before so it's all new to me! I understand the very basics of them, but this has explained so much already! Gonna be watching this again and again when rebuilding mine I think
For anyone wondering what those marks at 35:07 are for, they're used to set the summer and winter mode for the choke. Also would really recommend making a vacuum generator using an old bicycle pump fitted with a gauge to get correct measurements because those can vary quite a lot if the parts are faulty. Also makes it easier to set up that way because you don't need to hold anything together with a rubber band.
The accelerator pump volume, according to one of the manuals should actually be 0.326 ml (cm³), which is way lower than what is in CJs manuals... Also the duration of the stroke, and the gap between seem to be switched...
You're right about the pump test, it should be 1 second pump and 3 second wait! I thought i'd double checked the volume from the other manuals, i've have to re-check.
@@JamesAkers thanks for the video btw, helped a ton!

Man, you helped me so much! I had no idle and I followed you assembly guide. I cleaned out every single hole in the carburettor and now I have idle and the car goes much smoother. Thanks! If you want to know, I have Skoda Favorit 135 LX with the same carburettor.
Great video, it will help me greatly, along with your other ones, Do yoy have a link where you gir the fuel inlet filter/strainer. I cannot seem to find any online
Hi James, cracking videos ... Just found I have a Weber instead of the intended pierburg 2e3. It has some leaks and uneven running, the Weber is 2701 model I believe ... Shall I go back to pierburg?
super video! I tried to refurbish my carb before but I'll do it again because now everything is very clear and I think I missed some bits :-) Thanks a lot!
I changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the carb inlet fuel filter and it worked for a while then same lose of power came back. Do you think the fuel pump could be gunked up ?
Hi, just a bit confused about the jets, you changed the jets for the primary and secondary Venturi, and the air correction jet you changed just one, am I not correct in thinking that the secondary Venturi air correction jet needs replacing or is it fixed and can't be changed.
Was following this video today! Soooooo much help for a first timer! So simple and clear! Unfortunately when removing my 'injector' I managed to snap the 'spout' part off 🤦 so gotta take my spare carb apart to steal that one! Otherwise this video is **** hot accurate and perfectly descriptive, but not tedious or boring! Honestly so much help. Thank you
Once you notice it, you can't help but hear it !!! Smacking your teeth every 30 seconds lol good video, only thing worth mentioning is the vacuum restrictor does NOT sit in the pipe, it pushes into the end tube of the vacuum
Hello are al the setting the same for al cars or do they al need different settings? I have a vw Jetta 1.3 from 1986 and i want to clean up my carb. to. my carb. is exacly the same like yours. Great video! Thanks.
Hi Tom. I've just checked the Haynes manual and the settings for the 1986 Jetta are: Choke pull down - (a1) 2.4 +/- 0.2. The jets and float level are the same.
@@JamesAkers Thanks for asking, actually the car still ides quite bad, it does start but with the help of the throttle. After getting a bit warm it starts to have problems (like running on 5 cylinders only). I suspect the problem is the choke flat that does not open and close when it should. I set it up to max 3,5 mm open but this does not help much. I ordered a new choke pulldown unit (original) maybe this would help. Is there any other way to test if the choke mechanism works?
I've run into a problem with my pierburg 2e3 rebulid. My pump injector doesn't spray any fuel, i've tried blowing some water thru it even with ball inside pressed but feel's like it doesn't do anything, is it normal (my car is golf 2 with 1.3 engine if that matters)
I'm about to rebuild my carb however it never had the small red filter on the pump injector and it doesn't come with the kit! Does anyone know where I could find one?
Hi James, and thank you for your nicely videos! Have you any experience on Brosol carburettor to replace the original Pierburg 2E3 (fits 1.9 DG engine code Waterboxer engines)? bye bye
I just had one question. I just wanted to ask re the fuel isolation valve, I've tested this, it's clean, it clicks when I put a 12V charge acrosss it but I wondered, should the 4 holes in the valve all be completely open and exposed when you put that charge across or do they still appear partially 'blocked'. It clicks which is good but not sure how far it should go back so not sure if it is still faulty. Any ideas, thanks :-)
5:19 Is that air corrector jet allows the air to float chamber to generate more atmospheric pressure in the chamber and pump more fuel through the nozzle? So if mine running reach, do I should screw that jet in or unscrew it to get the mixture leaner?
Hello.. Can u help me about carburetor Pierburg 2e in Golf 2 1.6-1.8.. I exchanged many carbs but all couldn't work...i did more and more profesional carbs service but its not work again after some days... I wanna try fix my carburetor now..is this instructions in video for my carburetors..can i adjust carb same as in video? Thank you.
Thanks a lot for this video. Maybe you could help me with the carburator electric conexions. I don not know which ones have to be connected do direct posivite ignition and which ones to the temperature sensor. Thnk you
Great videos. I’ve watched this one all the way through more times than I care to admit. Still struggling to set my carb up though….it really struggles to start in the cold, I push the throttle in to set the choke flap but it just doesn’t want to start, then the auto choke warms and opens too quickly and the carb guzzles in lots to cold air and bogs down and stalls! Once warm it runs really well. Any ideas?
A great video about adjustments. thank you for the info. I have only one question. when you fit the jets in the primary and secondary venturies you show two numbers, 102.5 and 110, what could happend if I have 105(primary) and 117(secondary)?
Hello James. So happy to have found this video. This might be a silly question, I don't know much about mechanics... yet... My 1988 T3 just had a new engine put in and the mechanic opted to upgrade from the 1.9l to the 2.1l using the same carburetor (Pierburg2e3). I have a few issues (gas mileage, stuck throttle control, missing lever for choke flap) and am now wondering, before completely taking the carburetor apart and/or looking for a rebuild one, will it ever going to work properly with the 2.1l??
Hello! Yes, there are loads of people using the Pierburg 2E3 on the 2.1L and it running really well so would definitely recommend giving it a refurb. Search on the The Samba (www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=20&sid=1cadc8374c5848ba2d62cee81d3d8217) and Club 80-90 (club8090.co.uk/forum/) forums for examples. Let me know how you get on!
@@JamesAkers Ah, only just now realized that you had responded. Thank you so much!! I have also contacted you with my other email on another video of yours...I live in the States and am learning that a carburetor is not the best part to have in the engine, as that version of the VW engines never officially made it to the states. I am determined though to get that thing fixed LoL. The spring from the throttle control is missing and also the lever that attaches to the choke flap is gone. Maybe a few other parts. Those are the two obvious ones. I am on a back order list of sorts for a carburetor coming from the UK, but that might be a while so I am trying to figure out what parts the two missing ones are to possibly order those somewhere and start rebuilding.
Hello James. I need the little black round heater that is fit to heat the throttle Valve. Do you know where i can buy iT.? Or do you have a spare to sell.? Thank you.
hi great vid, hoping you could help me, i have a issue with the fuel returning to the float chamber via the top hole in the pump and none coming out of the pump injector when trying to measure ml per stroke, its puzzling me.
Hi Tony, sounds like the injector may be blocked? Can you move the ball bearing in the bottom at all? I might have a spare knocking about if you need it.
Hi, james i was thinking the same myself, i can move the ball bearing but it is very stiff and jerky and i can only just blow down it, if you have a spare that would be great let me know how you would like paying as i have looked but can not find a replacement. Thanks Tony
hi james in the Haynes book t has the specs for the peirburg 2e3 for the vw lt 2.4, would you be kind enough to post the specs up, I have used your videos to rebuild my carb but I cant get a manual for the specs, you know the specs for the accelerator pump and choke flap, you know where you used a drill bit, I am struggling to find the specs for the LT want to get my carb back on and the van running
Hi mate, the Haynes I have has the following info for the LT 2.4 - There are two measurements for the Choke pull-down: (a) - 3.5mm +/- 0.15 and (a1) - 7.2mm +/- 0.2. If you look at this video for the Golf the guy makes two measurements so it might be the same process for yours: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rt7l_B1J54U.html No info on the pump setting though, i'll see if I can dig anything out.
top man, thank you James really appreciated, I guessed it was around the 3.4-3.5 for the choke I set mine at a "slack" 3.4 so is probably 3.5 so really chuffed, surprisingly easy carb to do once you get into them, look complex at first with all the vacuum lines etc etc but once the screws are in done, they are not to bad, your video certainly help so hi5 from me to you!
excellent really appreciated james! I found it hard to find the settings for the LT petrol, a lot of info is in Russian, I don't think the pierburg had much love in the uk, they seem pretty good to me if set correctly, simple like an SU used on BL/Austin engines
