In this video made for Valentines Day, the Crazy Pigeon Lady explains the historical and symbolic significance of the white Dove and its relationship to the common Rock Dove, the ancestor of all Feral and Domestic Pigeons.
Hi Jem. can you make the mealncholy mourning dove call? I had a feeder once and several mourning dove couples would come by. It was heaven to watch them! Thanks for the history. You know so many fascinating things!
I havent tried it! Im in the UK so the Mourning Doves are not here but I can imitate the calls of our other wild pigeons/doves - the common Wood Pigeon, the Collared Dove and the Stock Dove :-)
My first birds were white ring necked doves. I got them when I was 14 because I was in to magic and wanted to do dove magic. I fell in love with them. Now I'm 45, I still have doves, and still don't know any dove magic.
I have one male pigeon, I have had him for about six months, he is very friendly and non-aggressive. ( He is about 3 years old) I let him out about 6 hours a day but I am worried he may still be lonely. I was wondering if I could get another senior male pigeon and gradually put them in the same sun room area and maybe even eventually in the same cage without them having aggressive behavior toward each other? I do not want to get a female as I do not want babies and I am also afraid of the hen getting egg-bound. If I do decide on another pigeon it will be one from the same pigeon rescue where got my original bird. Any insights on this would be most helpful!
Gender isnt always easy to tell with pigeons, and unless you get a DNA test, no other method is 100% reliable. With pet hens, you should avoid stroking their back and flanks but head and tummy are okay. Many pigeons are scared of hands so you need to be patient and gentle. Theyll let you know what theyre comfortable with!
