This video is a great example of what initially drew me to your channel and kept me coming back: You not only recognize that some people can't easily do every pose perfectly, you clearly love and respect those individuals just as much as those who can. You always have advice on how to do the pose to the best of one's ability, and you offer encouragement and praise for simply making the commitment to show up and be present in the moment. Whenever I hear people say they've tried a yoga class and it wasn't for them because they felt rushed and/or kind of embarrassed that they couldn't do all the poses, I suggest they try at home with your channel. I explain how chill and supportive you are to anyone who wishes to join you, and point them to these single-pose breakdowns as a good starting point. There are plenty of other yoga channels on RU-vid, but they've just never clicked with me the way you did, and still do. (As a side note, you also have truly one of the most soothing voices I have ever heard. Just hearing you talk makes me unwind a bit.) Thank you for your hard work and your willingness to welcome anyone interested in yoga into your home once a week. ❤️
this was the best pigeon tutorial I've viewed. I feel so much more confident know I don't have to have that 90 degree with my leg. I'm not that flexible. thanks!
I'm a runner whose been having severe tightness in my hips and top muscles on the front of my leg. This pose has been a lifesaver! Thank for your not just showing the pose, but for taking the time to show deeper stretches and ways to modify it. I can't wait to check out your other video. Thank you.
Thank you for bringing to light the fact that I should NOT be attempting to have my left knee at a 90 degree while doing this pose. The first 3 sources I found ON THE INTERNET told me to do so and I was not doing this stretch as well as I could have been. I just tried keeping my foot closer into my body (minding to keep a little 'brightness' in my foot) and I feel I'm getting much more out of this position. Thanks!
So true! I'd always been taught to make a right angle with my front leg, which meant I felt nothing on my back leg, just an awful pain on my hips. I just tried it now and got far further down than 'usual'! Considering i have very stiff and painful hips, i will find much more benefit by not worrying about the right angle of the front leg.
Thank you for not rushing through this pose and offering alternatives for those who aren't as flexible, such as myself. I am a mech engineer who works from home and I was having back pain throughout the day. Come lunch and I decide to stretch and come across your video on the pigeon pose. Now I feel so much better and can go back to work without as much pain.
I didn't realize this was a part of yoga! I am an acrobat and this is one of the stretches I do to warm up my legs for my splits. Maybe I should start doing yoga as well to compliment my acrobatics .
Love the way you explained the getting into the pose. I have watched many of your recent videos. When I searched for the pigeon pose I saw your video and felt happy you explained it so well. You’re a great guru.
i just love the way, of how you descripe to view "help". I believe, there must a lot of people just forcing there body into different kinds of yogapostures, just because they definitely don't need a block/towel. Embrace help, both on the mat and off.
This video quite literally changed my whole world! I was doing a bedtime routine that called for pigeon but she had pillows blocking her and I hadn't done it yet.... Found this to learn it, and now I've found myself binge watching (and doing) all of the little tutorials! I keep returning to and giving up again on yoga, Bc I can never find someone I enjoy watching and listening to and following along with! Until now.... Thank you so much, I am so inspired!!
I just love how I when I look for something and I always see “yogawithadriene” and I know that’s gonna be a good one!! I am currently doing the MOVE series and at the same time I want to learn how to do King Pigeon Pose. This video is from 8 years ago. You didn’t aged!!!
Im doing MOVE too and pigeon and the crosslegged forward fold are really tough for me. I love finding this video, however I have to start even earlier on the pose as I cant walk the front leg out at all without straining my knee or fall out over the hip.
I love this video as it shows the different stages of Pigeon pose and what I am eventually aiming for. I do like a goal :-). It really explains how to get the best out of the pose for you, no matter your ability or experience. Such an inspiration.
This post is changing my life. My plantars Fasciitis reoccurred after an intense period if stress. Nothing would help. I read that I needed to open my hip flexors. I found this video and it's making a huge difference on the iliopsoas muscle which was in knots and screwing up my posture, my hamstrings, calf muscles, and finally my feet. Thank you for this!
Thanks so much Adriene for that in depth explanation of pigeon pose, as others have said most people insist your leg us at 90 degrees, impossible for me, I feel a lot more confident now xx
Thankyou! Good to see this slowed down and top tips. Such a good pose for opening up any tightness in the hips. But it's SO important it's done in a controlled way, as you show here. A very strong ( but very beneficial) pose.
Thank you for teaching us the foundations of yoga and for showing options on how to maintain a good pose when flexibility is still wanting :-). It makes all the difference!
Simply the best method of demonstrating this pose! Thank you, I stupidly tried to watch another person and I could not follow. Thank you for showing patience even though you can't see what we are doing.
Maybe I will just have to come to you and teach a class! We do carry a lot in the hips- & I plan to do a hip releasing sequence but for now- spend some time on your back relaxing the hips- the front & the outer edge. Draw circles with the knees- one leg at a time. Then bring your palms to your knees to draw circles with both. Close your eyes & spend some time here- softening that area of the body. THEN- work your way to Runners Lunge. Lots of great hip helpers - I will do a video for you!!! xo
It's great to see how the pigeon has evolved for Adriene as well if you compare videos from 2013 up to today. I was curious about my progress after 1 year and half, more or less, but makes all sense even more - Glad I watched this!
I'm happy to have found your lessons, 65 here with some really flexibility issues, some from injuries, some lumbar fusion but overall determined to advance without hurting myself! thanks for the tips, I always liked this pose Johnnie
I love this comment so much I want to share it! It is true, we often do not have time to stretch in class- sometimes even in YOGA class, haha! The irony. So- I am so glad you took this time for yourself. Your message inspires ME. Thank you! I send you love and hope you continue to find the time and joy in the journey! xo, Adriene
Even though I practice this pose every single day. I looked up your tutorial on it to tweak my entrance into the pose a bit. I love all the little bits of information I soak up from these videos that are focused on one move! Thanks as always Adriene xoxo namaste 🙏🏻 Btw. It’s been one year and 1 month and some days since I’ve started doing yoga every single day. And you’re part of the reason I’m here. I just wanted you to know that. 🙏🏻❤️🥰
I feel you my friend. I love that feeling that return to self! YOGA WORKS! Lets do keep inspiring each other. All of us! Keep in touch- and thank you so much for sharing! Keep saying YES.
I can do the 90 degree variation, but today I found myself really appreciating the modifications with the blocks because it really made me focus on the sensation. And it felt amazing when I wasn't thinking about whether I was doing it "right!" I think I'm going to be sticking to the block variations for a while. What an eye-opener. Thank you, Adriene.
This was hard! I’ve surprisingly never seen this pose so it was really interesting to find out how to do this pose without any prior knowledge. Love your foundations series ❤️
After having some trouble with Pigeon during the MOVE series, this video was just what I needed! Your in-depth explanation of proper form really did the trick. Thanks!
This poses got my into yoga. It completely solved my sciatic nerve pain brought about by modern unhealthy living. I hold my hands up I was responsible for it but to think this pose could be taught in schools as opposed to years of useless dry facts. Great video as always you look so young I'm used to your new videos.
Oh my God Adriene!!! 🤩😍 I've always felt a little bit uncomfortable during pigeon pose and the muscles of my legs would hurt every time. This guided practice is perfect!
I LOVE pigeon pose! One of the first confidence boosters i had when i started a class forever ago lol i cant do alot but i sit in pigeon sometimes just at home while watching tv or playing w kids cuz it feels amazing! Now corpse pose is my embarrassment, and crow is my nemisis. Anyway this was the best tutorial on the pose iv had. I need to activate my back leg a little better to get more of an exercise. Long winded but thank u Adriene!
First video i have seen of yours. I was just looking for exercises for general hip and lower back flexibility, , but WOW!!! That really released my piriformis for the first time in months. Also love your clear and simple presentation, with variations for different levels. Awesome work and thanks ☺
My teacher showed me this and it does wonders for my hips and lower back. I was in a car wreck and my hips tend to get really tight sometimes. It stretches everything that I need stretching.
I do the butterfly regularly and I love that pose! Thank you so much! I'm currently a full-time student, I don't have the money to pay for regular classes, so I'm relying a lot on your videos and they've been an amazing help. So I will definitely be on the look out for a hip sequence!
You have the best videos on all and any kind of yoga poses. You explain the poses really well with your calm voice, non-intimidating language, and amazing modeling. It really, really boosts my confidence. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for your foundation video's I've been doing pigeon wrong for 2 years. I've never been on the centre line! I've made the adjustment and surprise surprise when in proper alignment the stretch is so much deeper.
Thank you, Adriene for this simplified and kind demonstration, I think you have explained in the best way, if we need to add some extra we need to follow the basics, before this I feel that I have never come across such detailed demo.
I have found that I have problems with poses like the forward fold, where the goal is to straighten the legs, but the pigeon pose was really easy for me, no problem laying the forehead on the ground on the first try. It's really interesting how different peoples bodies and flexibilities in different areas are! As always, great video, thank you!
This is great I have been doing haha for a while now and you show how I can modify the postures better to suit me...You are a wonderful yoga teacher really, thank you.
Amazing! I have incredibly tight hamstrings and weak hips so my doctor has prescribed me yoga, pilates, and stretching while I take a break from running. Yesterday I did one of your workouts. Thank you!
Great video! So glad you had that tip about how your leg doesn't have to be parallel to the front of the mat. I was taught that it HAD to be parallel with the mat, and was always like yikes, this is super intense. It was so much more relaxing to have it just angled a little off of the parallel track! :) Thanks so much!
This is superb. Thank you for taking the time to break it down so much. It looks almost balletic too. Thanks for this, I can't wait to check out your other videos.
I end foundations with this pose knowing of course that I can go to any videos you offer here at any time and look forward to October's Explore. I love you so much, your karma is so generous, embracing, loving, and inspiring. This youtube channel means so much to me especially since I am not in a position financially to partake otherwise how I would like to. May God grant us all ease, peace, success, safety, and joy today and this upcoming week. Jai Namaste 🙏🏽😘💖🤗💎💐
Like many others, I was putting my leg at a 90 degree angle but could never 'square my hips' so although I was getting some benefit from the pose I think it was limited. Thank you for this video Adrienne, I feel silly for not coming to you earlier on this as your are my first choice for yoga on RU-vid.
Just revisited by chance and circumstance, such a lovely pose to deepen in. AND discovered I'd missed out on the music-tip first time round. Checked it out, loved it and did a spontaneous flow to it :) I love getting unexpected bonuses like that! Go life!!! And thanks
As a young teen before I discovered yoga, I naturally stretched out my hips with this pose. I remember my former step father telling me that wasn't a real stretch and that I would hurt myself. He was wrong and to this day it is still one of my favorite poses!
Adriene, I adore you! And I enjoy doing yoga with you everyday in the comfort of my own home! I wish I lived in Texas-would love to take one of your classes someday! Sending love from the Windy City! Namaste 🙏
