I don’t have a pet pigeon (yet), but there are ‘wild’ pigeons at the apartment complex where I live. I feed them bird seed twice a day. I noticed one of the pigeons is banded, and seems to like me. But I need to pick it up in order to read what’s on the band to find the owner. So I’m watching your videos. Thanks for making these videos.

Update, I dont stroke her back anymore and no matter how I touch her, she gets stimulated. Also, as youll find from my last comment on a previous video, I didnt want to cage a bird whose lived their life outside so i installed perches and poo catchers to avoid it ending up on the floor. That being said, if i go to the bathroom, so does she. When i sleep, she sleeps in my room on a dresser. She spends her entire day in the same room I am. I love it but...should I introduce a captive female/male pigeon for companionship ?

So, since pigeons usually view all humans as male for the most part, do male pigeons in the wild make friends with other male pigeons? Like do they preen and feed other male pigeons like a bro thing or is that mostly for mated pairs?
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
Wild/feral pigeons behave more naturalistically, so they would view other males as rivals. Inside a captive situation like a house or loft, the space and flock size (and thus mate choice) is much smaller and so pigeons begin to behave differently such as having same sex pairings or extra marital arrangements. In these situations it is less common for males to form pairs than hens but it does happen. As a general thing, wild/feral pigeons will only preen or feed their own mate, and not other members in the flock but in a captive situation, anything goes sometimes!

I love lahores so much and have always wanted one, but can never tell if they're a friendly breed or not. Your lahore is adorable and seems to enjoy being pet. But talking to other people, everyone either says they’re the perfect angels or the angriest/meanest birds ever to exist. Do you mind directing me to breeders who breed a more temperate line of lahores (if you know any?)

Hello! I need help. I got a pigeon some days ago and she was in bad condition. Swarming with feather mites and with her wings taped. After we got rid of the tape and mites, she started to act very agressive, peck, wingslap and do that dominant and agressive headshake. After she could fly correctly, she only stayed on high surfaces and in a very poofy-sleepy like position. She showed comfortable signs but she makes weird noises when i am near her and she is very agressive. Also whenerver i need to put her in her cage at night she always jumps around and makes a mess spilling everything. She is quite small, 1.5 months old and she is one of those turkey-tailed pigeons. How can i calm her down and gain her trust when she is that aggressive and dominant? Please respond to this comment
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 2 года назад
Earning the trust of rescued pigeons that have been abused takes a lot of time and patience. Before you even think about handling its best to back off for a while and just let them settle in. Please keep following my series, Episode 10 will be my guide to bonding with pigeons but there are no guarantees any bird will become cuddly, especially a rescue. You could also try joining Pigeons As Pets - The Perfect Pet facebook group and seeing if others have any tips for you or can share their experience - good luck!

I have some questions on my Eurasian Collared Dove. Are these behaviors in this video the same when presented by my dove? I’m afraid he is a she by the pancaking and fluttering her wings at me. She just recently got out of her screeching baby voice and started her coos. When I talk to her in the morning she will pancake out like that and “coo coo” at me in response. She hangs out with me all day I work from home so she is either on my head, shoulders or right by my desk. I’m glad you said that about petting her back I will refrain from that, from now on! 🕊 ETA: she will also fly and land on my hand or right by me and do a “REEE!” Like a cooing scream out of nowhere. Any ideas what she’s telling me? Thank you!
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 Год назад

@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
It is possible in the worst case scenario, but if not too stimulated then hens may lay less often. My 2 hens do not lay at the moment. If there is no male around you can leave the eggs with them until abandoned, switch them with fake eggs or hardboil them and put them back. Some people eat the eggs (which are reportedly tasty, ive not tried) and some leave them outside for wild animals to eat. Hope that helps!

Hello, I would like to ask ... since English is my second language I saw some videos and one was about an imprinted pigeon … unfortunately I did not really get how the imprint can happen and lead to an agressive behaviore ... how do I get my pigeon not to imprint? I should have a pigeon in about 2-3 month (should not be hand-raised) but it should be like month or 6 weeks old. And since it will be very young they would not be able to tell if it is a boy or a girl (which does not really matter) but they said in a video that this aggressive behaviour happens to imprinted pigeon males. I would like to just have a companion and a friend but I have quite a young child and i would not like this agression behaviore to happend. So if anyone would be able to help me explain and have some tips I would really appriciate that. Thank you

What's the best lighting for pigeons?
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
The best lighting is as much natural light as possible, so siting the cage by a bright window or taking the cage outdoors on sunny days when you can but you will still need to give a supplement with vitamin D to make sure they get enough. If you use a light, make sure it is specifically a UV light meant for birds. I dont use them myself so dont have any recommendations, sorry but the Pigeons as Pets facebook group members may be able to help you. Make sure any light you use is properly and safely connected and used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions :-)

I have a pair of feral pigeons who came and sit by my window pane. They sometimes enter my room and sit on my bed too, eat the grains I leave for them on the window etc. They aren't frightened or bothered by my presence in the room, I guess they have become used to it now. What makes me sad is that they still don't perch on my wrist or allow me to stroke them. I know they are not pets and have fear of humans but how to make them overcome that fear. I appreciate any advice you can give. I try imitating the coo sound to call them near but when I do that they look at me in a funny way, maybe they are telling me what a big fool you're.
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
If ferals are coming into your house then theyre already very confident and trusting! As theyre not pets they will naturally be more wary. They may feel unsafe inside a closed space. Feral outdoors often will jump onto the hands of regular feeders so its possible but theyre very unlikely to tolerate any stroking. Thank you for befriending them!

@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
The only surefire way is a DNA tesr but an experienced fancier can usually tell with greater than 50% accuracy on the basis of many factors like behaviour, head shape, tail carriage, vent bone space, toe length etc. But pigeons can definitely surprise you so if you need to be 100% sure you will need a DNA test or if your bird lays an egg than you have a hen for sure!

Your videos great, but I think you might be wrong about the gobbling because my pigeon starts cooing and walking in circles and nodding her head when she is happy and excited and wants me to play with her. I guess the body language and context are more important than the sound sometimes.

How do you know if a pigeon is unhappy? Will it make a particular sound?
@thecrazypigeonlady8731

Its difficult to gauge emotion in birds and pigeons do not pluck their feathers like depressed parrots do but if your bird is listless, not very responsive and shows no enthusiasm then all is probably not well. Pigeons are social creatures and do need social interaction from people or other birds but their needs arent complex. Keeping them in a place in the house where people gather most often goes a long way, as does having a pigeon friend but if you have a lone bird, they do need your time :-)

@@thecrazypigeonlady8731 Hi again and thanks for replying to my questions. Hope it doesn't get too annoying. She makes a very subdued cooing sound which gradually becomes a regular coo. I''m hoping its not a sing of stress.

I rescued a young pigeon from a cat. I have had him/her for few months now. He/she is becoming a bit aggressive now at time and was wondering why. He’ll come over to me and want a cuddle and head rub etc but after a few min he can become aggressive and start to really peck at my hand or leg etc whatever is near him. When he does this I can calm him down mostly but at other times I end up putting him in his cage til he calms down. Why is he being this aggressive even when he want my attention? Thanks

Young male pigeons do go through a stroppy teenage phase as they mature, they are trying to see who is boss in this relationship! In this episode I do speak about aggression, it doesnt mean they dont like you. Male pigeons can be bossy and aggressive, its just how they are, but they can also be sweet too!

@@thecrazypigeonlady8731 thank you for the reply. I thought he was male but the odd times I have stroked his back he goes in to the mating position - lowering body and opening wings. I stop stroking when this happens. This lead me to think he is a she. Love the info from your site.

I hope to cover building a relationship with your pigeon in Episode 10. Be patient, things can take time. Hand feeding tasty treat food will encourage them to view your hand as a good thing. Good luck :-)

What should I do, my female pigeon keeps going in her “nest” and doing the crouch, making this very loud/ yelling type of coo. I call it the horny coo. I just want her to be comfortable idk what to do

My hen is doing the same - its breeding season so theyre all hormonal at the moment, it calms down in winter. Give her lots of time out the cage and attention, but not stroking the back or flanks. Shes calling for a mate so give her as much love and affection as you can.

I have 2 5 weeks old pigeons since 5 days and they hate me...I was just trying to put them in their house at night but they bit me and "screached" as if I was a monster trying to eat them 🥲 the female one wont even let me pet her breast
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
Baby pigeons make a squeaking/squealing until theyre about 3 months old so thats not abnormal. The 'biting' is unlikely to be fear, they probably are begging to be fed which they will do all the time, this is normal behaviour! Please check out my baby pigeon development playlist to see Spencer, a baby feral pigeon, he behaved the same. He screeched and bit me all the time but was still tame. Young pigeons often go through a teenage phase where they bite or fight you - dont lose heart!

This is not the correct way of holding pigeon. You put two finger under the legs for firm grip. Many breeds f pugrons are not gentle and can fly away . Not agreed

Where does the assumption about pigeons being monogomous come from & why is it constantly parroted despite research showing otherwise?
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 года назад
Monogamy is the species standard for the wild rock dove and indeed all other pigeons and doves however domesticated pigeons kept in captivity do alter their behaviour and are a lot more flexible about their mate preference and marital arrangements. Ill talk about this in the episode on nesting and breeding coming up!
@christofthedead
@christofthedead 3 года назад
@@thecrazypigeonlady8731 From the small amount of research I have done, I can only find scientific claims of pigeons being "socially monogomous" (which translates to the equivilent of human polyamory - a stark contrast to monogamy). I have only owned pigeons for a few months now, but both of my pairs have swapped partners already, and one of the males has also started breeding with one of his children. I feel like using the word "monogamous" when dealing with domesticated pigeons is fairly misleading. Are you still planning on doing an episode on nesting & breeding?

@@christofthedead yes I do still plan on doing one on nesting and breeding for my pets series and Ill definitely talk about unconventional marital habits of domestic pigeons!
