Watching Sam just... Crumple into himself is kinda endearing. Like the sheer guilt Ashley manages to evoke in his face. Powermove Miss Johnson, nothing but respect!
It's the face. She knows she's alone, but she still sits up straight and fixes her hair before she tries to talk to him. It really shows how much she cares.
@@Drekromancer Exactly, and adding the fact Pike's drunk, even if not as heavily drunk as Grog, shows it besides Ashley's expression on top of how she sounds when speaking up helps a lot!
True but I’d offer two points of clarification: 1) Given how he left, she probably thinks he’s still mad and wouldn’t want to talk. 2) She’s probably a bit angry herself/not sure what to say to him.
@@austinboylan5476 I agree, I think this is more of that thing you do when you write letters to dead people. Like, the point isn't to be heard, the point is to feel even a little bit connected to the person you're missing. I think Pike misses Scanlan, but she knows that he needs space and will come back on his own time
@@austinboylan5476 I'll give you that on your first point that you made. Your second point though I'm not entirely sure about. At this moment you can easily see that she does miss Scanlan and is more a little bit depress than angry at him. Now saying this later on in this campaign when Scanlan did came back. She did ended up getting angry at him for the way he left them and the way he came back as if he had no shame for his actions. So at that moment I don't blame Pike for getting upset. However at this moment it was more missing out a close friend then being upset towards him. Update: I'm sorry I misread @Austin Boylan. I wouldn't see why Pike would be angry at herself. Since there wasn't much that she could have done about it.
Ashley as a sad drunk broke EVERYONE. Let that sink in people. This woman can break the hearts of all 7 of her best friends on a whim. Everlight bless you, Ashley Johnson
Sam looks so guilty the entire time Taliesin keeps looking so shocked and taken aback. Marisha just puts her head in her hands and looks about ready to cry Liam just doesn't know what to fucking do with himself. He was funniest to watch, not gonna lie. Laura just puts her head in her hands and looks about ready to burst out laughing Matt looks like he's watching tv Travis is asleep.
She REALLY captured how heartbroken a drunk Pike was sounding when contacting Scanlan like she was. And just how everyone else gets into it with how heartfelt her speech was, even as sad as it was.
I love how the moment she says "Scanlan?" everyone immediately breaks but Taliesin and then after a few seconds he and Marisha make eye contact and he just looks so sad and betrayed lol. And Sam looks like he's about to burst into tears while Laura and Liam are losing their minds and Travis just collapses both in and out of character. The power each of these humans hold to make everyone around them and watching them just cry is scary lmao Also I really wanna know what Taliesin said to Marisha that made them both actually cry lol like how did Taliesin make that more angsty than it already was??
Ashley truly has some of the best RP moments in all of Critical Role. I just love that most of the time she is quiet and even though most of the time is missing from the group she can come in and have amazing moments like this that are both funny and endearing at the same time. You can tell the other members of the group know how amazing she is at it too because they all are so focused and intently listening whenever it's her really getting into an RP.
This is so sad and so funny at the same time! The first *Scanlan?* just breaks your heart and then she starts talking and you remember that Pike is super drunk and everyones reactions and Travis is just the cherry on top of the sad, hilarious sundae.
I did these backwards... I started with campaign 2, and came back to Vox Machina while waiting on campaign 3. I didn't appreciate Ashley's "Yasha" until I saw her work as "Pike". I absolutely adore AJ
Yasha was a cool character, but Ashley's long absences had a big impact on her getting into the character, which was a shame. At least with Pike, she had the home game before Critical Role, and the Saranrae, astral-projection thing was an easy way to weave her in and out of the story through Skype. Campaign 3, I think she's absolutely killing it with Fearne
Imagine putting this over an old voicemail machine...? Scanlon tuning his lute or reading or (God help us) getting intimate with someone else? It's just his eyes that are animated... God it's so good in my head.
Gosh, the personal offended look on Tals face and how Liam has in instant melt down..... Pike sure as hell twisted the knife there effortlessly, I hope Sam feels at least half as bad as I
So I'm at episode 51 rn and I have no idea what's going on in this scene and I'm already super heartbroken, so I can't wait to actually finally reach this moment and understand and have my heart break even more.
I gave up trying to catch up with season one around episode 15. I'm nearly done with episode 26 of season 2, so can someone just spoil what's going on in this scene? Is this after one of Scanlan's deaths?
omegagilgamesh Scanlan left the group at this point because he felt that he wasn’t truly part of the group. Sam was playing a different character during this
Basically, Scanlan died in a fight, breaking a promise he had made to his daughter. In order to bring him back, the group brought his daughter to his resurrection. After he woke up, he felt betrayed and this was piled on top of a lot of building resentment he'd had for the group because he didn't feel as connected as the rest of them did, so he decided to leave. Everyone was crushed and it sent them into a crisis of personality and wondering whether their "family" really worked at all. Scanlan left just as Pike realized she might reciprocate his romantic feelings towards her, but he left on such a sour note that she never got up the nerve to tell him, though she did look for him while he was gone, never quite finding him as he had traveled to a separate continent entirely. At this point in the campaign, Scanlan has been gone for months and the group is managing to hold together, but they really feel his absence. After Pike has been separated from them for a while, she comes back to join them on their adventures and in getting absolutely PLASTERED and reminiscing with Grog, she admits that sometimes she puts her earring in (a magic device that they all have so they can communicate with each other within a short distance) and talks about what she does each day as if to Scanlan, knowing neither he nor any of the rest of the party can hear her as they're off on adventures far away. I suggest you look up the clip "Late Night with Pike and Grog" to see a better part of the conversation. Ashley basically made a point to Sam how upset she was at the first opportunity she could and how Scanlan's leaving affected Pike, since she wasn't there for the session where Scanlan left and couldn't respond to what he said at the time. It was a gut punch no one was expecting, since the rest of the regroup was pretty upbeat. It was brutal and still funny at the same time because these nerdy voice actors are ACTUAL ACTING WITCHES THAT PLAY WITH YOUR HEART.
@@bellacroff9016 You forgot to mention that Scanlan woke up after his revival tied to a bed, his clothes taken away and that Pike and Percy had covered him in pudding.
I kinda love how this is a jab at Percy, he unintentionally let Scanlan leave with an earring and now his mistake comes to bite him the behind, but its all behind the curtain. If he had taken the earring he wouldn't have looked half as bad as a person, its technically his, and an item of VM as a group for coordination.
You sure you want to know? The context in this case will almost certainly be the cliffhanger ending of Season 3 of the animated series. They've already set it up in Season 2, if you know what to look for. It was a major plot point of the original campaign, and the animated series has been following pretty much all of the same points.
in a previous episode scanlan (sam riegel) had an argument with the party and he left to be with his daughter. before this, pike had said that he missed scanlan and that sometimes late at night she would talk to him even though he couldn't hear
This has inspired a moment with my first character. You know, when I finally get to play. My drider ranger is a very sweet guy but has lots of mental health problems. I imagine him getting sad drunk and then explaining the time he killed a man for his blood and how much he regrets it
Basically Scanlan got pissed at the group and devised to leave for a bit. Nobody from VM had heard from him. Sam was playing Taryon Darrington at this time while Scanlan was on hiatus
Campaign 3 starts next week, which I'm sure we're all excited for. Campaign 2 was good, not as good as 1 my opinion, but I know most people loved it. But, good god damn man, pretty much everything about campaign 1 was perfection, at least after Orion was gone. But even his chaotic bumbling was fun most of the time. Everything in campaign 1 felt so natural. The relationships, the friendships, the love, the pranks, the story, the trust, the distrust, the happiness, the sadness, the anger. It all just felt more natural than in campaign 2. Obviously it's just my opinion. Different strokes for different folks ya know? If you disagree at least do it respectfully. Let's keep the critter community the best god damn community on the planet, agreed?
