Pikmin 3 glitch: Captains behaving like Pikmin after bouncing into an enemy

This video demonstrates an interesting glitch that can happen in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 3 Deluxe. When a captain (Alph, Brittany, or Charlie) bounces off a Bouncy Mushroom and lands on an enemy, they get confused and start behaving like a Pikmin would, attacking the enemy using the slap animation. This was found a few years ago by ‪@quotebalrog‬, but only through modifying the game, as it was thought that there were no places in the base game where the conditions for this glitch existed. As it turns out though, in the Tropical Wilds Remix stage in Mission Mode, there is one spot where this glitch is possible, by luring a Dwarf Orange Bulborb to a specific spot with one captain while using the second captain to throw the third at the right time. The timing and positioning for this is pretty precise, but once you work it out it's not that hard. Usually the Bulborb will try to bite the captain, and when this happens the captain takes damage and stops behaving like a Pikmin, but on this attempt I got lucky and Brittany was able to deplete all the Bulborb's health. She seems pretty proud of her achievement, considering the backflip at the end.

She's actually attacking with the strength of a Blue or Yellow Pikmin (10 damage per hit), rather than a punch (3 damage per hit). Notice she also does the same animation that a Pikmin does to attack, rather than the punching animation.

That’s…probably one of the most strangest glitches I’ve ever encountered in Pikmin. Not only that, I’ve never seen the captains behave like this either, as well as attack enemies themselves with their…antennas? I don’t think I’ve EVER seen them attack with their helmets, unlike the usual punch they always do.

They are using the same animations as a regular pikmin. Brittany basically turned into a blue or yellow pikmin for a bit. They also dealt the same damage as those kinda of pikmin do.

Yea. I believe the captains use the same skeletons as the pikmin, so the coding is just probably reusing the animation parameters for the bones instead of the whole model.

Can go underwather, is immune to poison (even tho it's not featured in 3), has the strenght of Blue and Yellow Pikmins, can't be shaken off and locks the enemy into trying to do that. Yeah, I think Blue Pikmins are getting demoted once again. At least Yellows and Whites have different functions aside from having a immunity. Brittany is just a buffed up Blue.

Poison is kinda in Pikmin 3. The Vehemoth Phosbat has it and I guess you could kinda consider Sputtlefish to also have it. It's just not lethal like the other games.

@@GoldenLeafsMovies phosbat spores and sputtlefish/bloyster ink are not poison, they are actually part of their own hazard called "panic", like what mitites and emperor bulblax roars do. white pikmin are not immune to panic, although purples are.

@@Youarewhatyoueatsonic the animation isn't scrapped, lol. Captains have a punching animation. The reason she's using her antenna, is becasue Captains and Pikmin share a lot of code in the game. So she's pulling the animation that Pikmin use to attacks. Same reason she's doing damage equal to a Pikmin attack, and not a Captain attack EDIT: I can't type words properly

Probably not, but in this Pikmin 3 prerelease footage from late 2012, you can see Brittany being thrown at a Fiery Blowhog and starting to attack it the same way. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WEhZe_XPaQM.html While it could be intentional here, it's more likely that this is a consequence of leaders and Pikmin sharing a lot of code.

They have voice lines recorded for the captain’s attacks, which means this was supposed to happen at some point.

The attack voice line plays when you punch, which occurs when you press the throw button with no Pikmin in your squad. The game code decided to use that sound effect despite being paired with the Pikmin attack animation instead of the punch animation for... some reason

Are you sure it‘s a glitch tho? Since the captains in pikmin 3 are more automated than in earlier titles, I could imagine that they are programmed to attack when they bump onto an enemy (Similar to when there‘s a dangerous situation and they run away). But I‘m not sure, it‘s just a theory.

There's no place where it's possible (I've tried all the places with Bouncy Mushrooms). If there was a place where it was possible, it would be possible in Story Mode.

This is not a glitch. It is an intentional feature! You can do the same by trying to throw pikmin while not having pikmin and being right next to the enemy.
