I like to imagine Olimar only pretended this was his first crash landing in his distress call because he didn’t want to admit that he’d crash landed on the same planet four times
my headcanon is that it DOES retcon pikmin 1 but takes place after pikmin 2 but before Pikmin 3. Just sorta what makes the most sense to me. And also I do like the idea that the pikmin 1 bad ending was canon.
Considering how much of his BS Olimar has had to deal with and clean after, the fact that he tolerates Louie and doesn't even throw him under the bus is very respectable.
I like to think Olimar hit his head real bad or got amnesia after the crash in 4. And then managed to forget everything that happened in the previous entry’s
@@zeke7076 I think he was just trying to be a good employee by copying what Olimar was doing. Except Olimar was a leafling so he got the totally wrong idea.
@@Syka He always has excuses for his attempts at cold-blooded murder. Dude stole Ridley's electric guitar and people still think he's remotely justifiable.
Schaff mentioned once upon a time that content creation wasn’t just his job but also his hobby. It’s wonderful seeing him talk about the things he loves and hates.
Honestly, my favorite videos of Schaff is when he’s talking about something he absolutely loves and that makes me happy (which is why his Whisker if the Heart video is my favorite video of his out of the 5 years I’ve had watching him, with the 5 hour Bojack video being a very close second)
My favorite thing about Louie in this is that it’s implied that the reason Louie try turning the koppaites into leafings is because in his expedition notes, he states that olimar told him to basically do what he does when it comes to their job, and considering he saw leafing olimar and moss creating more leafings before he encounter moss by herself. So as such Louie literally just saw leafing olimar doing that and went, “alright guess olimar doing that now for some reason, guess I’ll follow what my higher up doing.” Arguably funnier then him doing it for no reason.
I personally thought that his reason for kidnapping the castaways was that he really wanted to know what leaflings tasted like. I guess quasi-cannibalism was a step too far, even for Louie.
55:35 Pro pikmin 2 tip: >play through the tutorial once. >copy paste your save file 3 times. >Never touch the tutorial again (Also, you can just skip most cutscenes or at least mash past the dialogue whenever you can't, idk what he's talking about)
he is probably talking about the switch version of Pikmin 2 since that and the Wii version don't let you skip cutscenes. The GameCube one is the only one that allows you to skip 90% of the cutscenes. (also I think the switch version of Pikmin 2 is bad. The GameCube version is so so much better).
@@Pikzelow didn't know that was a thing, I have only played the gc version. That version must suck. No product placement, censored jokes, missing instruments in songs, no weed, worse control scheme. Oof. Aspect ratio is nice for sure, but then again mods that do the same are easy to install on Dolphin.
@@cabbage426 yeah, the switch version is a version that annoys me when I play it, mainly because they downright ruined the controls and physics. They made swarming more annoying now since you have to hold L+ Right stick to swarm since the Right stick is for camera rotation now, and they also removed the throwing moment for Pikmin when you do a running start, which is a game breaker for me (the lack of momentum was in the Wii version too but that had the pointer controls so it didn't matter).
57:02 My headcanon that I'm fairly confident in is that like plants, the leaf on Oatchi's tail is a result of him adapting to the oxygen-rich atmosphere of Earth, meaning that if he leaves the planet, he'll suffocate and die. A really grim parallel to Olimar's mission in 1 and 4
@@sargin1 the quaggled mireclops, I think, was meant to be part of a beach level. You can easily convert that mud into sand, and maybe have him be some kind of hermit crab with a shell you have to break
I was so scared when Pikmin 4 was announced as usually fourth installments usually ruin trilogies of movies and even games but I was shocked when the game was as easily as fun as Pikmin 3 just without the supporting cast. The game was easily the most fun I had with a Nintendo game in quite a while I truly say it’s one of the best games on the switch period.
Its commonly set up as trilogies for IPs, but seeing this comment, I think the pikmin series could be considered moreso a duology of duologies, 1 & 3, and 2 & 4. Like a square, instead of a triangle
This game really wasn't that good, as a Pikmin fan that waited 10 years It's gone more in the direction of mobile game goop brain slop "spend 30 hours doing the same small tasks over n over" rather than atmospheric short, tightly paced games with high replayability
I personally don't mind Silksong being in development limbo. Hollow Knight is already a Super Hard game, so I have plenty of time to play the original.
I love that literally every time a game in this series drops, we get like one or two answers, and maybe a thousand more questions about what happened to the earth.
You joke but it really was. Artemis Fowl could not have been a worse movie even if they had gotten Tommy Wiseu to direct and Jared Leto to star as the kid.
@@gboogie3257Huh? Granted I’m a bit disappointed we’re probably not getting any more updates or DLC for P4 (still have no clue why they nixed proper campaign co-op or an option to disable auto-lock), but equating inactivity to active destruction is a bit of a stretch.
@@johnclark926 okay in hindsight that doesn’t make sense But recently the Pikmin community as been kinda destroying themselves by just being average annoyance fanbase to others
I had a very different experience with the Smoky Progg in the final dungeon being less threatening if you encountered it in Night Mode first. In Night Mode, you have Glow Pikmin, which if you have a big enough group, you can stun the Progg and kill it nearly instantly with no Pikmin loss. For me at least, this became my go to strategy with Proggs. Still dangerous, yes, but you have a simple solution. Now, halfway through this hellhole, you have no Glow Pikmin. The strategy does not work. You have to fight this boss monster with no cheat code. Add the music, and it is still terrifying. It's not fear of the unknown, but fear from knowing exactly how outmatched you are
It honestly fits though: the wait between 3 and 4 represents the 40 years in the desert, after which they got their 'promise', and the weird memes made during that time correspond with the fake idols crafted by the people during their darkest hour. i forgot where I was going with this lol, ig Pikmim is just a metaphor for the bible OATCHI IS RISEN
@@tiramisu7339a baby seriously could have been born when Pikmin 2 came out, and be an adult old enough to vote and go to the military when 4 came out. Damn.
Schaff, as someone who has been in the Pikmin community since the very first game, thank you for spreading the good word of the most underrated Nintendo series of all time. I'm so glad you made a video on each game in the series (my favourite game is 2 but it's okay I hate the Doomsday Apparatus as well) and it's clear you're as passionate of a Pikmin fan as the rest of us Pikminheads. Also thank you for *not* explaining the Moss being homophobic thing, I love to confuse the hell out of everyone who isn't on the subreddit
It’s actually explained why Louie was doing the thing he does, In a End of Day Log (I think like past day 30 or 40 or something like that idk) Olimar says he told louie to do whatever he does, So as we see in Louie’s Voyage Logs he does see Leafolimar and basically saw what he was doing and just thought “oh okay we’re doing this now” And just copied Him by taking the Koppaites
I like how in every game there is always just enough plausible deniability to say Louie wasn’t being malicious. Even though you really think he is an a-hole, there is just enough where you can say “he was misinformed or ignorant.”
I seen the Smoky Progg in Super Smash Bros Ultimate as the first enemy and was like, “oh is that like the second easiest enemy to the Bulborb like the Koopa is to the Goomba?”. I didn’t know this was a sign that this would be the hardest game of all when they used the hardest boss of another game as enemy 1.
@@megastarwarsrocks99 I meant to say easiest like in I thought the Smoky Progg was a common enemy (yes I didn’t research Pikmin yet). I edited the comment.
"If the doomsday apparatus has 100 haters, I'm one of them. If the doomsday apparatus has 10 haters, I'm one of them. If the doomsday apparatus has 1 hater, it's me. If the doomsday apparatus has 0 haters, I'm dead."
Pikmin was a franchise I learned about as a child through no recommendation by anyone else, only knowing it existed because of the trailer in Luigi's Mansion. I was *barely* able to get my hands on it, not only because I had no money and had to beg my parents for a game they've never heard of, but because out of every store we looked, only one place had one copy of the Wii version. I didn't spend that much time on the internet, so I was lucky if I found someone who even heard of it, which only ever happened because of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I am so happy that 14 years later, I live in a world where Pikmin is a successful franchise for Nintendo, where there's new games and each one is better than the last, where every mainline title is on a popular console and easy to find at a local Wal-Mart, where there's posters and merchandise at the five dollar store, where people have heard of it and appreciate it. It is a world I never thought would be possible, and it's so fulfilling to be in it.
I remeber I was looking for Wii games with my dad and there was a copy of Pikmin 2 for Wii and my dad was like “Pick a game you’ll enjoy not whatever this is look at how stupid this looks (gesturing to Pikmin 2) I knew of Pikmin from Smash bros and than said “idk looks pretty cool”
As a person with severe anxiety, the impending sense of doom is something I’m familiar with on a daily basis. When I relax to play a game, I prefer to *relax*. I loved Pikmin 2 so much because I never felt anxious while playing it, even during a fight. I love to slow down and smell the flowers, take in the world and interact with the Pikmin. And with the release of Pikmin 4, I was so incredibly excited to have that feeling back and fresh with a new game.
I’ll never forget that feeling I had when pikmin 4 first got announced. I genuinely started crying. And then that feeling of finally booting up the game for the first time. I must’ve spent at least 10 minutes on the title screen just taking it all in as I started to cry…again. Pikmin 4 has become one of my favorite games of all time, and I’ll always cherish it.
1:02:20 I remember the Pikmin community discussing how the smoky progg wouldn't be as threatening in future installments because its effect is basically poison and whites are immune to poison. Then Pikmin 4 came out and we were all wrong.
I love the contrast between Olimar's notes and Louie's, like with the blue pikmin Olimar goes into the mechanics of how they breath underwater, while Louie just says "I want to put my hand it its mouth"
Given what Louie did this game. I wanna see a sequel have him as a notorious criminal or at least have the reputation of one. Also a game starring Moss in the vein of Spider-Man: Miles Morales would be neat. 2:12 "Boy, I really hope someone gotfired for that blunder." Also imagine if Louie ate the Loyal Three and Pecharunt alive.
Honestly I kind of want the opposite, where the characters of that game think he’s doing some sort of shady thing but in Reality he’s just hanging around doing nothing malicious. Louie is a bumbling idiot who wanders into a lot of trouble and I think that’s the charm of his character.
Louie’s kind of like a force of nature, certainly the chaotic neutral type. My dude just wants to cook alien creatures and adopt final bosses as pets, and you honestly can’t blame him-it sounds like the dream life
@@hyliaphora-cecropia You get it, Louie isn’t evil he’s just kind of.. off compared to everyone else. His treasure hoard entries really showcase this. He doesn’t think straight
@@smashers6971 Yeah, he just operates on a different wavelength from other people. It’s shown in his entries that even though he doesn’t really think about how his actions could hurt others, he does care about some people and doesn’t mean any direct harm in a malicious way. Olimar’s dialogue about him after you rescue him is really nice for fleshing out more of who Louie is back on Hocotate-he’s kind of slow and careless, but Olimar sees some good in him and treats him with patience. All that Louie wants is to cook up some giant bugs and be left alone, but the plot just keeps getting in his way lmao
@@hyliaphora-cecropia I think it’s really telling that Louie himself knows he can cause trouble, as he comments that Olimar is the only person who doesn’t yell at him when he makes mistakes.
16:19 I like to think this is a parallel timeline from the previous 3 games. Think of it this way: *First,* Olimar landed on PNF-404 because he crashed with a meteorite. But since he's so small, even a small change in the impact would've sent him to a COMPLETELY different part of the planet. This explains why he didn't land on the Impact Site, but on the Sun-Speckled Terrace. *And second,* Olimar manages to repair his ship both in Pikmin 1 AND his Shipwreck Tale. So why did he NOT make it back to Hocotate in the latter? *Because MOSS got sick after lift-off.*
@@hyliaphora-cecropia Which means! Louie isn't a criminal in this timeline! Though tbh he may have committed other crimes and honestly probably has lol. He diiiid kidnap the castaways and turn them into leaflings but he arguably thought he was following olimars orders.
@@LilyCat2399 Yeah, he didn’t eat the company into debt…yet lol. P4 is also where it’s revealed that the carrot thing was a premeditated crime, and knowing him, Louie is 100% going to do it the first chance he gets. We love that little rascal, he’s just a hungry little guy lmao
@@hyliaphora-cecropia it’s weird because 2 implies that he couldn’t control himself when eating the Golden Pikpik carrots, which I kind of prefer. It feels like a legitimate mistake and more appropriate for his character than him deliberately eating them. Louie is a dolt who doesn’t think straight, not a scheming genius.
i remember watching that Nintendo Direct of September 2022 and said to my then girlfriend (now wife) "Man, i wish they share some news about the Mario Movie and Pikmin 4" and she said to me "You're asking for too much babe" and then my bro Shiggy comes out of a garbage can and says "The mario movie is great, its still in development also here is a teaser for Pikmin 4" refused to elaborate and walked out the screen like a mad man
Like, it's crazy, right? They just went and put the entirety of Pikmin 1 into the game as a side mode. It's crazy. I love it. I still can't believe they went and did that.
I really appreciate the rant about the different Zelda games. I understand it was mostly just an analogy for your old Pikmin 2 opinions, but I’ve honestly heard a lot of those same takes over the years, said very genuinely.
Isn’t it crazy that we got Metroid Dread and Pikmin 4 within two years of each other? Both insanely anticipated games that everyone thought would never happen
@@autismandgaming4532 I mean, not really. Star Allies was in like 2018, Forgor Earth was 2022, so 4 years. That's pretty normal timespan between sequels these days. It's once you get into the 6, 7 year timespans that it starts to become 'is it coming out' territory. Pikmin 3 was 2013, and I don't remember when the last metroid before Dread came out, but I think it was in the decade range.
1:20 Fun fact: Tom Phillips (the creator of that article came back to review Pikmin 4. 12:40 Also Bulbmin and the parasite pikmin that create them called Bean Pikmin (which are the ones in the pikmin 3 concept art) were found with coding in the files, and a mostly functional green onion was found too. Also Puffmin were found in the files too.
15:52 I think Miyamoto confirmed in an interview that humans aren’t extinct, but that we just don’t interact with them in game. I remember Did You Know Gaming made a video where they had translated a Japanese exclusive interview where it was stated.
Schaff, I doubt you care to read some random youtuber's comment, but Your Pikmin vids Played a massive part in me getting into the series and I am incredibly grateful for it. I now consider these among my favourite games of all time (even 2) now that I was persuaded into playing them. So let's celebrate Peakmin together shall we?
Surprised and happy to hear you like it that much. Didn’t get around to playing this one or much at all for Pikmin games, gonna have to get back to playing the 1st one again and getting through them all (apart from 1 I played 3 and 4 demo) Love this adorable and beautiful series, happy it’s grown in popularity. 🌱
Okay, before even watching the video can I just say they're better be an entire dedicated section for the Piklopedia. HOLY SHIT the Piklopedia in this game. Not only does it outclass the two previous Piklopedias by literal light-years, it may very well be one of the best monster/item catalogues I've had the pleasure of interacting with in ANY video game. It's so interactive, immersive and fun to fuck around with and read through. For my whole first playthrough I spent hours looking at, toying around with and incessantly reading every kooky, Pikmin-y little blurb. I LOVE casting Thunder Spell on innocent Bulborbs, it makes me feel like a GOD. It's SO good in fact it made me come to a revelation, why isn't the PokéDex in Pokémon like this? It would be so much better! How does the franchise literally all ABOUT monsters not let us see them in the way goddamn PIKMIN lets us? They could go even further with it too, imagine you could just be able to test fight literally any pokémon at any time from your PokéDex and you could toss whatever status effect you want on them, that would be so SICK! Edit: Okay yeah, he's definitely right about the music and I totally get it. But other than that HECK YES it's so good and it was nice to hear him mention it!
The Pikmin 4 waterwraith is my favorite video game moment of all time. The fear of seeing the waterwraith drop down from the sky is just perfect, and having to run away is done incredibly well. Because you can’t harm it at all, you have to scramble through every floor as fast as you can to outrun the waterwraith or prevent it from spawning, but you finally get to the bottom floor. You unlock purple pikmin, and walk into a battle arena. The waterwraith then comes down, but this time your purple pikmin can hit it. After destroying its cement roller things you realize that now it’s nothing. It can’t hurt you, and it pathetically runs away from you as you obliterate it with your entire squad. It’s so satisfying to give absolutely no mercy to the thing that haunted you for so long. If anybody in the comments says that pikmin 2 had the better waterwraith, idk I never actually played pikmin 2 so pikmin 4 is the best to me Wow I didn’t notice how much I really typed jeez
Realistically the only difference between the pikmin 2 Waterwraith experience and the pikmin 4 Waterwraith is how much oatchi counters the thing. In pikmin 2 your squad is always uncompacted with stragglers as you desperately try to use c-stick (lineup horn) to get them out of the way and inevitably the Waterwraith will run over your stragglers. In pikmin 4 you can simply ride oatchi which compacts the entire squad and prevents stragglers which significantly nerfs the Waterwraith. Otherwise the experience of the Submerged Castle in pikmin 2 and the Entombed Castle in pikmin 4 is pretty much identical. Some small changes have been made but otherwise the layouts and experience is the same. Also I'm 99% sure i have seen this post word for word in regards to the submerged castle, being tormented in a race against time until the final floor where you get your revenge on the Waterwraith. (And in pikmin 2 it earns you the pluck-a-phone, i forget what it gets you in pikmin 4)
46:38 Fun fact, mislabeling 2 different species that are very similar but just one is bigger than the other, is something that happened in real life. For years the "Giant Squid" and the "Colossus Squid" were both named "Giant" for i think decades. So yeah more reasons to support the head canon of the royal and monarq bulborb.
they are literally the same species though, it says in the Piklopedia that the Sovereign Bulblax's species is _Oculus supremus_ (advanced age), and the Emperor Bulblax is just _Oculus supremus_
@@liammcnicholas918 I think at this point it's safe to say the books will be finished even if not by Martin himself. They're far too popular to be left alone after he's gone.
One thing I love about each pikmin game are the titles. Each one has a different number depending on what game it is (obviously) but what’s cool is that every number is made up of a different color flower. The color of the flowers depends on what color flower the pikmin of that game have. Pikmin 2 has pink which is the color of flower white and purple pikmin have. 3 has purple which is the same as winged and rock. And finally, 4 has yellow which is the same as ice and glow.
I was just rewatching your Megamind 2 review for the 7th time then stopped at the part where you mentioned making a Pikmin 4 video, and low and behold, I refresh my page and there is the video! I'm not a fan of Pikmin myself, but I love to see people talking about what they like
I decided to finally take the plunge with this series earlier this year, started with 1 back in January and just finished 4 a few days ago. Really happy to see this series getting more widespread attention
38:33 as someone newly traumatized by the pikmin 4 man at legs, I'm also glad it was included! It was the kind of scary that you can almost immediately laugh about since it's more jarring and silly than truly frightening. That didn't stop me being upset on my pikmins' behalf though
I was enjoying the game until I got to the Plunder Palace and saw the glorious return of BREADBUGS, MY BELOVED DARLINGS And somehow they made them even CUTER! -They hum the Giant Breadbug theme when they walk around. -Their "Oh! Treasure!" animation and run is just so precious. -They get scared and run away when you hurt them which is just so sad. -But it's okay! Because you can dig up their treasure now and don't have to hurt the little friends. I had no idea Breadbugs were back until I got to that level and I absolutely lost it. I was so excited to see them again! It made this game a 10/10 for me!
This video almost made me cry bc of the look back on the announcement and release of Pikmin 4 man... also god that Pikmin 2 section was handled so well, I was really worried how that would go down but you popped off! Amazing video!!
Really hyped for the video, rewatched the other Pikmin videos you made Schaff, I got into the franchise because of Smash and Chuggaaconroy, I also really enjoyed Pikmin 4 was def in my Top 5 favorite games last year.
You took the words right out of my head. This game is the most perfect blend of all previous Pikmin games. I love rescuing Olimar in the least amount of days, while saving as many castaways as possible. Once I locked down how many days it took me to rescue Olimar to the minimum, the castaways and treasure became a kind of high score for every run. I usually don’t cure Oatchi (Sorry Oatchi), or play the sage leaf trials either (mostly because the only optional gear I buy is the charge horn), I’m completely satisfied with the content and length of rescuing Olimar. But I have to keep my first save file that has Olimar’s shipwreck tale on it, that mode is just so awesome.
It sure is nice of Nintendo to release a long awaited fourth entry to a beloved franchise of theirs, which is something I hope Metroid prime fans can say in the next few years if possible.
Tbh I honestly had very little issues with the doomsday aperatus. Yes it is kinda annoying to carry back. But grinding for purples wasn’t that time consuming or hard. You can just enter the subterranean complex with 15 reds, dump them at the start, and run to the purple candy pop buds.
Ages ago, when speculating about Pikmin 4 on Reddit, I had said that my ideal plot was something along the lines of Hocatate Freight doing cruise ship tours of PNF-404, and the ship getting damaged in orbit, leaving Olimar and Alph (the Pikmin 3 crew got a free trip for returning Olimar.) On board trying to prevent a total catastrophic ship failure while everyone else ejected in escape pods. Then the main goal of the game would be to collect the escape pods as well as treasure/raw materials to repair and upgrade your ship and self. Funny how I was pretty close, but I had a few ideas that didn't see the light of day, such as certain captain abilities- Olimar had tighter control over pikmin as a 4 time PNF-404 veteran, Charlie encouraged the Pikmin to deal more damage in combat, Alph had an extended scanner, whistle, and better suit durability, and Britany's biology experience let you see enemy health and weaknesses. Maybe Pikmin 5 will have those.
The one thing I don’t like about it is that monsters don’t respawn. I always loved taking hunting trips with my Pikmin after clearing out the treasure but here the map just becomes an empty space with nothing to do.
First Arlo, now Schaff?? I cant believe some of my favorite creators are as enamored with this series as I am. Good video :] (Scruffy too but he’s kinda the Pikmin guy so that didn’t surprise me)
my favorite part of that Emperor Bulblax floor in the last dungeon is that it drops you right in the middle of all three of them. You know as soon as you move you have to fight all three at once, or play in a really tight space. It's so threatening on that same note, the Empress Bulblax fight is even better because of how easy the first fight is. The first time you meet the Empress Bulblax, you just got Rock Pikmin, which the Empress cannot kill. It's easily one of the funniest fights in the series just for that reason. The boss cannot kill you. Now in the final dungeon, not only does it exist in a cramped space, but it spawns babies that will eat your Rocks, so the OG strategy no longer works. It's so good
On the matter of night missions taking up entire days in the main campaign, there's an easy solution: make at least one of the other crew members playable (probably Dingo or Shepherd) when Pom/Lisa and Oatchi are asleep. Give the player the option to assign day/night shifts to the ensemble of crewmembers.
