Douglas Preston
Grand Central Publishing, 2017
About Historathon
Welcome to #Historathon2024 ! This is a year long non-fiction reading event where we read up on the history of the human civilization.
The Prompts
Though the event spans a year, it is broken up into time periods where you can participate by reading about the history of a subject you're interested in during one of those time periods (our prompts) in the year. The periods are as follows:
Prehistory to 500 C.E. (January, February, March)
500 C.E to 1500 C.E (April, May, June)
1500 C.E to 1820 C.E (July, August, September)
1820 C.E to Today (October, November, December)
Join in on the fun!
Who says history has to be boring? You decide on the historical subject you'd like to learn more about, and if it fits the time period, talk about it with us! The event is to bring history to the forefront and get people reading history :)
Be sure to take part by either uploading videos of books you've read related to this event, and/or comment on one of the various videos uploaded for the event. If you're not comfortable with either, that's okay - read and watch the various videos from booktubers taking part.
Look for the hashtag #historathon2023 to find all the videos that will be created for this reading event in 2023 :)

It seems like one can't go very long these days without hearing of exciting new lidar assisted archaeological finds in Central and South America. Who can complain about that? 😁 Hope you enjoy your Q2 reads!

Thanks Bryan! I remember watching a documentary on Lidar and found it fascinating. It's amazing how it can capture structures beneath the trees and vegetation of the rainforests :)

One down, three to go! I’m so glad I got it together to participate this year. I have to go to my TBR and see what has been lingering on the list that fits well for this time period. Happy reading!

I read a book one about Michelangelo last year. I really thought it was interesting. I enjoyed reading about his career and the work he put into the Sistine chapel. And how he used corpses to study anatomy. History books can teach you a lot. The Aztec people have an interesting history. I haven't read a lot about them but I have watched some documentaries about them. I didn't like the part of the human sacrifices but I enjoyed learning about them. I hope you enjoy learning more about history in the books you read this year.

Thanks Peter. From my reading, some of the higher profile sacrifices (those of kings and warriors) chose sacrifice over captivity as they saw it being more honorable to appease their gods. It is definitely a different culture.

I really enjoyed reading about Mesoamerica and about India last year in Q2-Q3, and I figure to do so again. Depending on how my mood and available brain power go, I may also read some more about late antiquity in Europe. The ArcheoEd podcast has a channel on RU-vid and is really worth watching. Edwin Barnhart is a leading scholar of Mesoamerican societies and fun to listen to.

I'll check the ArcheoEd out, thanks! I love that you're reading about India and Mesoamerica. I think for next year I'm going to try the Indus valley and surrounding east Asian areas for the second quarter as well - specifically the trading that was done and the ships used :)

Those both sound really interesting. The Maya and Aztec book is beautiful! I hope you enjoy both 😊. I’m not sure what to pick yet. I don’t own any books about that era, but I found Women in the Middle Ages by Frances Gies at the library, so I’m going to try that one as a general intro into that era, and if I have time, I’d love to read something about Joan of Arc. Hope you have a nice weekend of good reading! 📚 ✨

Thanks Farrah! I really enjoy reading about different cultures and how they lived. And, it's a lot less academic than my last Q1 pick so it's easier on the brain :p

I find myself with a huge stack books for Quarter 1 and it shrinks each quarter. Q2 I may go with the with the Lost City of the Monkey God. I expect Q3 & Q4 I may go with food & hood history. Thanks for the Monkey God suggestion. Cheers ~ and enjoy reading your choices.

Nice set of books you are planning to read. I am currently reading a book, The Children of Athena by Charles Freeman, that I think would have satisfied the requirement for Jan though March had I read it then. It talks about Greek intellectuals from 250 BC through 450 AD. Out of my comfort zone, but I am enjoying it. I may try to read books that meet the requirements for the remainder of the year

I love that we try different things, even if they don't pan out. The great part of this event is that you go on your terms - if you skip a quarter no worries, we're just happy to have folks join in when and where they can :)

I like the book with the photographs, but The Lost City of the Monkey Gods sounds like nonfiction I'd love to read. As far as I know I have no Historathon Q2 intentions. I thought about reading a book about the Desert Mothers but it probably won't happen this year.

I've not read the Lost City of Z, but I do want to pick it up. I enjoy reading about the early 20th century adventures - even though some of them did not end successfully.
