A pair of pileated woodpeckers is foraging on some old, rotting logs in the forest. If you've seen the large holes these birds can create in dead trees, this will be interesting. They are contributing to decomposing logs on the forest floor by breaking up the wood into smaller pieces. These woodpeckers eat carpenter ants, who nest in old wood. They will also eat beetle larvae and any other insects they find inside.
