I like making pillows as gifts for fa.ily. I use an envelope back when I can. Though I did put zipper in for my son on one pillow( I was proud of that one😅). Thank you for the measurements.

Nice tutorial. Ill have to keep this handy. I have made these before and always come up short on the over lap, now that I have the math, I'm good to go. I also have back stitched were the two backs come together, since this area gets handled and pulled putting a pillow in, makes that seam a bite stronger.

Nice project! I once made 20 of these for my daughter's kindergarten class (naptime). They needed to be removable for washing! But I forgot how I did them until I saw this video. Easy & pretty. Thanks so much. Kris!

Love this pillow series, Kris! I made a series of seasonal pillow covers for my Grandmom’s room at the nursing home a few years ago. Bc the pillow was always the same size, I only needed one set of measurements. I recently decided to make another set for a dear friend but bought a different size pillow form. I was kind of winging it on the envelope back pieces and I realize I didn’t have enough overlap. I’ll be revisiting this video for the upcoming covers to get the math right! Always love your videos!

Oh, thank you so much! So happy this is helpful! I love that you made pillow covers! I found it stressful each time I made one, too, and I decided I needed a formula. Believe it or not, I have visited my own blog on this for the math several times since I have posted it! LOL! So funny! Thank you for watching and for sharing! ❤️

Very nice video. I make backs with two layers, but I use separate pieces of fabric for the face fabric and the lining fabric. I run the grain lines in the lining perpendicular to the face fabric grain line to minimize stretching from the tugging I do when I insert the pillow form. I’d like to see a tutorial on facing a quilt instead of binding it. I don’t know if you ever do that since you make traditional quilts.
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance 7 месяцев назад
Thanks so much! Great tip about the grainlines. Thank you! I would love to make a facing tutorial. I have never done this, but I have always wanted to. Let me see what I can do.

I have used both methods winging it. I like the second method for lightweight fabrics for a stronger back and the first for more durable fabric like denim or upholstery. Great job making the math easy.

You are so welcome, Marion! A viewer named DeeDee sent me a bunch of old quilt pieces that she found at a yard sale. These are from those scraps! It was so nice of her to think of me! I plan to put these on my front porch when the weather gets nicer. ❤️

I just made a pillow yesterday out of the scraps from a completed quilt to go with it for next weeks birthdday. I zig-zag to cover the outside cut edges before I flip the pillow cover as this could potentially be washed a lot. I've never seen the double fabric back before, but I like it. Thanks for sharing

I would have liked how you determine the panel sizes of the front based on the size of the pillow you are going to insert.

This may seem like a silly question, but I’m wondering what size to cut my front piece in relation to the pillow size stated on packaging. If the package says the pillow form is 9” x 12” is that really the size you cut your front piece to? I am double checking this info because somewhere, somehow, in my sewing past I heard the pillow cover should be cut smaller than the size of the pillow dimensions. I have never experimented with this! What are your thoughts and experiences?
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance 6 месяцев назад
Not a silly question at all! Happy to help. I wish I had an easy answer for you, but honestly, it comes down to a few things like personal preference and the thickness of the pillow cover. Personally, I like to make (I don't buy pillow forms--they are super easy to make and I have a video on that, too) to be the same size as the pillow cover. It gives a fullness while still allowing it to be squishy and comfy. If you want a more formed pillow, however, get (or make) a pillow form slightly biggest than your pillow cover. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and sharing!
