Normally, new nibs should be bathed in distilled water and very little soap before use, as they come with oil to prevent corrosion. Maybe that's why they have given you flow problems.

@@CalligraphyMasters Something similar happened to me with a calligraphic kit from Daler & Rowney, which now works without problems, although the pilot parallels still seem better to me. Thanks to you brother, only the ink makes me breathe every day. "Let our light flow through the darkness of ink" A big hug.

That poor nib .... the poor Kaweco nib. My heart stopped when you begin to bang it on the table. The Kaweco might need cleaning, initial cleaning, before writing. Thanks for this video. Wonderful to see the comparison.

Calligraphy Masters it’s cus it’s a fountain pen. Normally dropping a fountain pen from waist height nib down will make it unusable. And you kinda man handled it by banging it against the table. Idk what type of damage that did to the nib.

I have 3 kaweco sport and haven’t had any problems with any of them.... I don’t think you should smack it like that 😅 maybe there’s something wrong with the ink or the feed... first time Inuse a new pen I squeeze the cartridge a few times and if the ink doesn’t flow, I gently touch the nib with the tip of my finger, and usually that is enough... But as I said... haven’t had any issues myself and it is a very recommended pen in the fountain pen community...

I love my Pilot Parallels. The ink used in the cartridges flows so beautifully. As a beginner they make learning so easy.

Sometimes running hot water over the nib can make the ink flow better or writing on damp paper can get fountain calligraphy pens to start their flow of ink. I was glad to discover the Pilot Parallel because of you. Thank You

I got a bit dried out parallel on my first calligraphy lesson, so I was dipping it and ombre came out :) teacher was suprised - nobody did it before :) Now I´m using my Pilot parallel (both classic way and as a dip pen) and recommend to beginners. Good job not giving up the video :D

I purchased a Kaweco Sport with a 2.3 mm nib a few months ago...........the first and last Kaweco pen that I will ever purchase. Even after washing numerous times, and trying different inks I had problems with the pen writing. I contacted Kaweco, who basically made out that I was lying......totally disgusted with their response. I did get a replacement nib from the online pen retailer from whom I purchased the pen. The replacement nib was slightly better, but I still had problems. I've done some work on the nib with micromesh etc., and the pen is a lot better, but I still have some problems. When I purchase a new fountain pen irrespective of the cost, I expect to be able to write with it! Evidently from what I've read, many more people have had problems with Kaweco nibs.

I had similar issues with a brand "Manuscript" from England, very flexible nibs, affordable fountain pen set but had issues to write with the wider ones (2,8mm and 1.6mmm)

Most new fountain pens need an initial clean to remove a protective film, also perhaps it would have been a good idea to try it before filming. It wasn't impressive to see someone experienced with calligraphy treating a pen that way. I usually enjoy your videos thanks. Don't blame the tools.

I feel your non-flow nib pain! Before using a new nib...including fountain nibs...I wipe with an alcohol wipe. Any hesitation in flow, when writing, I lay nib edge on a damp piece of kitchen paper. Seems to encourage the ink to visit!

the kaweco sport wasnt ment to do calligraphy flat out ... the parallels were but the only other pens that i can thgink of that are ment to do calligraphy are the noodlers flex nibs and sometimes they are a pain in the ass too jinhao 992 with 2.9 mm works ok but not for writing fast either if you go to wish.com you can search for jinhao 992 and some are free plus the cost of shipping which is really worth it hope that helps

Like other people said you might need to clean new pens before the first use and you also pressed so hard with the Kaweco you probably pushed the nib away from the feed so the ink can't get to the nib. Banging the nib into the table probably didn't help either. If you're gonna try to shake ink down just hold the pen higher so that it doesn't hit the desk and hit the palm of your hand against the table.

I use a Kaweco 1.9 mm, and it's great! The cons in my opinion: Might be too grabby on the paper for beginners, and it doesn't like "dry" inks. If I had to choose though, I would go with the Parallel because it's just so versatile.

All I know with the broad-edge pen is Chancery Cursive, though, and have only been doing it for about 1 year. Actually it was your channel that made me want to use pens like this to begin with, before that, it was all pointed-nib pens, so thank you!

@@CalligraphyMasters This might be useful - I did watch the whole video btw! I have never actually used the cartridges that come with the Kaweco, but I have included some Amazon links to 2 things that work for me. The converter can pull ink right up into the feed from a bottle, so it should write sooner. I suspect the ink that came with this pen is crap, so I have included a link to Noodler's Heart of Darkness, which should have a much more liberal flow (most fountain pen people seem to regard it as the ultimate black ink). Still, when you disassemble the Kaweco, you find that the channel for ink to flow through is TINY, so I do not think it can ever flow as well as the Parallel Kaweco converter: www.amazon.com/dp/B01F42TJQ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_SDQAEb0K3AN5P The ink: www.amazon.com/dp/B0015VB4EE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_RFQAEbEBV02R1

😢I think this needs a retest. Do you use fountain pens often? It can take a bit for the ink to saturate the feed, and any misalignment will cause flow issues. If you had an already faulty nib or misaligned feed, you likely made the nib unusable or severely exasterbated the problem when you started banging it against the table. Fountain pens are not dip pens. The nib is not replace able and it’s a bit more of a delicate tool. You may have straight up destroyed it

The Kaweco pen needs to be banged on the board not the paper and maybe a rawhide mallet should be employed to impact on the top of the barrel at the same time :-) Thank you for an hilarious upload, great fun! :-)

It's hard to see how you're holding the pen when you're filming from the top, but you can try and angle the pen closer to the paper. That usually works for me

Thank you for the video. It's interesting that I actually feel the pilot parallel pen flows too well. It is good when using a wide nib; but I personally like narrower nibs so when using the 1.5mm pilot parallel pen I found it is difficult to achieve the 'crispiness' that I like to see in Italics and Gothic (this may also have to do with the ink). I own a 15mm Manuscript calligraphy pen, which is better in my opinion. But the problem with this latter pen is that it dries up really quick (if I don't use it for a week, it will not write). I have been thinking to get the Kaweco calligraphy set for a while but from this video the Kaweco seems to have the same issue as the Manuscript, so I may just stick with my Manuscript pen for now.

I'm surprised your Manuscript works for you. I bought a set (first ever FPs) and could not get the darn thing to write reliably. Even after I received a regular FP and got some Waterman cartages to use (I thought it might have been a flaw in the Manuscript cartages) it worked better but even when writing would randomly stop and i had to scrub a scrap paper to get it going again.

Con todo respeto, yo he probado de diferentes plumas caligráficas y estoy convencido de que Pilot Parallel Pen es una herramienta excelente, claro, dependen otros factores para hacer una buena escritura, y uno de ellos es la calidad del papel en que se escribe, debido a las características de la tinta de la pluma. También tienen su mérito las siguientes marcas: Sheaffer, Rotring entre otras.

My experience with wide nib penns is that they are to wide for the ink to spred fast enugh to the front so they are always to dry and dont make consistent lines. When they dont want to write at all i use them as a dip pen till they work again. Its not great but better than nothing

Master , Please keep small bottle/ jar of water as you do calligraphy/ writing. I do this even with fountain pen writing too. Soaking the nib/feed with ink or water will help to start the flow ink to the nib to get start writing. Nothing wrong with any pen that dose not writes as soon as you inked them. Your ink cartage seems dry or not enough filled. I have a Kaweko and it is a reliable pen. I hate when people hit the tip on the paper to get the ink flow. It is a bit insane. ' PRIME THE PEN OR GIVE A GOOD SHAKE IN THE AIR TO GET THAT STUPID INK OUT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL" OR USE THE PEN AS A DIP PEN!!! HA HA VERY LEARN EVERY MINUTES SOME THING. EVEN IN WRITING.

Sorry, for a master it's really stupid how you bring ink in the tip of the pen. Cartridge out of the pen and one drop on the tip or insert the tip into the cartridge. But NEVER crush the tip on the ground. It hurts just to watch. I have Kaveco Pens and the write very easy, and, of course, the Sport is short. It's to wear it in a pocket and you have to use it with the cap.

During the live chat I mentioned that one pen may need to be checked if it had a clear channel to which the response was that it was a new pen. Sometimes factories have a lot of dust or just machining by product and thought a simple check to see if any was impairing the flow of ink since the namebrand has a problem with flow. A problem with flow would indicate a channel problem. I'm sure I'm incorrect but when checking a new product I don't immediately think the product is perfect and immaculate.

PLEASE stop shaking your fountain pens - you are at high risk bumbing the nib onto the table and ruining it... AND shaking creates airbubbles inside the cartridge, which will hinder the flow when they get into the feed... you are welcome! 😉
