How much does an airline pilot earn? Can you get rich being a pilot?
In this episode I will be talking about pilots, contracts and the issue of money and pay. Stay tuned!
As always, I am keeping the issue very generic and I do not want any discussions about specific contract issues or companies. That's what PPRUNE is for!
Enjoy
Welcome!
On this channel you can expect video-blogs, technical instructions, flying techniques and much more about the wonderful world of commercial aviation and the life of airline pilots.
I am using my 13 years of experience as an airline pilot, training-captain and TRI/TRE to give you MY view of the airline business and the role of an airline pilot.
All the content is intended to give you a positive and constructive view into the fantastic world of commercial aviation.
Please keep your comments and questions in the same spirit and please INTERACT. The channel becomes much better then and its intended for YOUR benefit.
The content on this channel is for info and entertainment only and is not intended to replace any existing FCOM manuals or SOP's.
I am only talking for myself and do not represent any specific company, airline or entity.

Becoming a pilot has always been my dream but as you said: shit's expensive yo. So instead of blindly enlisting in a flight academy and piling up the debt I went for my secondary education of choice: Computer Science. I now have a job that pays enough for me to be able to follow a pilot training program and live comfortably. I started with PPL (SEPL) and I'm just going to work my way up from here (IFR, ME, CFI, ...). And we'll just see where we end up. I'm also building contacts within the aviation community through my flight school and instructors (networking is important!) so who knows right? maybe one day a job offer might just come up. Best case: I find a job with an airline company and become a pilot! worst case: I keep my current, well paying job and will be able to fly as a hobby. Which is a win-win in my book :D Even though it might take years, I'm not in a hurry.

Gosh Reece, you're so dramatic. No one said it's easy but it isn't impossible either. Guess what, you'll need a degree to show that you got knowledge in the area you want to work in. It seems like you are still living in the 80s where you didn't need a degree but just experience. There is only one thing i agree with and that is that you will not find a job in a commercial airline after just finishing flight school for 50k.

Hi Mentour Pilot, I do not understand why you have been hesitating to talk about this. I am a trained economist and would argue it is a rather important info. I know that a lot of people are reluctant to talk about pay but it is often another important factor (not the most important) when it comes to career choice. I thank you for finally revealing some information. After all pilots sure do not need to be ashamed to make to little or way to much. The information I have from the german market is 60k for starters, around 100k middle career and up to 300 for senior captains at Lufthansa. That does give a rough idea what one can expect. So thank you for your view on this which is confirming the data I have. I thought about going for it but think that I would not like to have different shifts as I like a constant sleep rithm. Thanks for the vid and good flight !!!

One simple reason is that your company will not like you talking about figures out in the public, or even among colleagues. Some companies might even have that written in the appointment letter. I'm not in the airlines industry, but at least that's how it is in my industry.

In Australia someone you are paying as a permanent employee say $10 would be costing you close to $15, so a contractors total should be about half as much again as an employee just to be even. (annual leave, sick leave, long service leave, workers compensation, superannuation and payroll tax) As for the complexity, get a good accountant (contadores publicos)

@evandickson19
@evandickson19 6 лет назад
Shreya K major airlines give sufficient pay for first officers. Regionals in America are not great and many times are not sufficient at an average of about $22 500. However in Canada they earn around $40 000 to $45 000 with $5 000 to $10 000 diems.

Just a quick question in regard to the training aspect of your video: dont some of those training companies partner with airlines through cadet programs to provide employment after training is completed? I know you'd still need to do the bond/mortgage of however much it costs to be trained.

Hey Mentour, i have a few questions I'm still unsure how pilots can take holidays off how can thay? Also, as far as tax goes, wouldn't it be the same as maritime? I always thought that it would be based on where the airliner was originally based in. Also, how does a pilot climb the ranks? Starting off with a small airliner and progressing to a very large airliner as a captain sure must be difficult, how would some of us compete to get the most qualified?? I'm in the process of doing my research on flight schools that don't take advantage on my dream of flying, and also won't prolong my training in a bid to milk me of money. It won't be easy, plus I'm based in the uk, so it's worse. How can I compare flight schools based on reputation for a specific airline? These are just questions I have from watching 10 of ur video tips so far. Thanks m8

I think you can never say for sure since it depends on what airline and what rank. Usually the bigger the airline means more money since the airline has lots of income making it easy to pay the pilots for a decent amount of money for what rank they are.

In my country pilot training costs ''only'' 13 500 euros however it's the only education thing that costs. University is free here in Finland. I would be able to pay for that somehow and I think I have the needs to become a pilot. It's just pretty risky and my parents want me to have steady income and a job or something... With my grades I could basically become anything so it's really hard for me to decide but being a pilot for a living would be nice.

Also, I have many people in my life telling 50/50 about this career (pros/cons). I would assume it depends on how much money you'll make to save up. For most well paying jobs requiring education, if you can secure a low interest loan then it makes sense to get the education right away. But if you can make a fair bit of money doing something you don't want to do as a career to avoid paying extra interest if you get horrible interest rates then it makes sense to save up.

I think it depends which country you are trying to fly for. For example, in the US the major airlines will not hire you without a 4 year college degree, but (if I am not mistaken,) in most European countries it is not a requirement. Do research on what airlines you want to work for or in what country.
@AdrianDotis
@AdrianDotis 7 лет назад
You should get a job and start saving up. After training you'll be in debt...with a degree you'll be even more in debt.
@OLGMC
@OLGMC 7 лет назад
That's not always the case though. In many countries there are banks that have special "pilot programs" for student pilots. After you get your first job you just start paying off in little blocks which is perfectly doable. It is also possible to only loan a part of the total training cost and pay the other half by yourself (own job, parents, etc... for example). I've also seen that in some countries the state can choose students to sponsor them which means their entire journey to the cockpit is... free! It's not everywhere and you will have to pass tests where they choose a couple of students but I've met fellow pilots in Sweden for example who graduated and didn't pay anything for their training. Also to answer his first question if you can go to a training right after high school the answer is yes. It can be an extra plus on your CV if you have a degree but then again you payed extra, waited another couple of years (graduating on a young age is an advantage as a pilot) but I myself came straight from high school when I started my training and I've met many others too. I think the mentality that pilots should be extremely highly educated candidates with high degrees is something from the old days, doesn't matter how much smarter or many degrees my other colleagues have because at the end we still have the same piece of paper saying we are commercial pilots :-)
@TheSpecialJ11
@TheSpecialJ11 6 лет назад
If you're an American you can become an officer in the air force and try and get a pilot slot and then serve 10 years as a pilot and then switch to airlines afterwards. Airlines love hiring former military cargo pilots. The only issue is getting into air force pilot training is competitive and requires a college degree. I am aiming for a pilot slot and am about to go to college, but I'll have an "easier" time getting one because I am going for a technical major and am good at school and have high standardized test scores. For others it is more difficult. You can even get scholarships from the air force to help pay for college, but if you accept one you're committed to serving at least 4 years even if you don't get a pilot slot. However, if you work hard enough, most routes will work. Military or civilian, college or no college, with hard work it will work.

I have hundreds of questions for you, and I will ask you all of them in time. For now I have one that is huge for me and will help me loads towards my own goal of becoming a pilot. So here we go :) I know that there are tests that I have to go trough to be accepted into an airline/flight school (not talking about tests to see if I'm crazy...). What can I do to better my self and/or prepare for these in the best possible way? I would appreciate it if you could do a video about it. It would help me a lot! Best regards for Norway :)

***** Hey man. Let me tell you this I did my test just recently and I tought to be honest that I was not going to make it because I could not really study for all of it except math. Now to train your English I would highly recommend you to read a english book, doesn't has to be a long one. Next, I would recommend you to read an article on the newspaper and try to summarise it in your own words as if you are telling it towards someone. Secondly for the physics I taught I would not make it because I didn't had the proper schoolbooks. At my school I had to give back my schoolbooks at the end,every year. So I started to look up on the internet and a lot of People recommended each other Schaums Outline Physics Course. I taught I should buy it but I could not find it and it would have taken me to long to get that book overseas. So I gathered all the info I could fine (they give you the subjects that you have to know for the exam) and studied. But I do recommend you to get a proper book, or just hire a reacher for couple of hours to tell you everything about those subjects and provide you with the descent notes. Thirdly, there are some hand and eye coordination excercices. You can't train for that BUT if you play playstation or a computer games it does help you in a way. Because gamers can handle more things by hand and eye coordination then the average person, that's scientificly proven!! The test you will do is that you will have to keep a small dott between two lines while they are moving and making slightly curves. Another test is to keep a blue ball between two lines, you control that with your hands. At the same time you have to keep a red ball between the lines with your feet. These two balls Always keep moving, they don't stop, you just need to hold them as best and as close as you can between those lines. Forthly, there is a general test that tests your knowledge about everything. They ask questions like : What would brake first if you would use a rudder made oout of 1) Wood 2) Metal 3) Plastic 4) Rubber 5) Glass? Obviously the glass would have been broken first because of the less flexibility it has. Another question, how does it come that a hotballoon rises? It"s called convection, convection is that hot air rises and cooler air falls down. A person opens the gass that lets fire come out and heat the giant balloon, because the temperature in the balloon is hotter then the temperature outside the balloon, the balloon adventually rises. These are very basic questions so don't panic. Just do you research and ofcourse learn a bit AND the most important thing, Trust and Believe in yourself! You also get some basic mathematical question like making fast calculation by heart. For example 145X126 or 15487+2546244 I passed for everything more then the average student except for a small subject and that was coordination. To this day I still don't know what I did wrong because they don't show you your faults. It was probably a misscomprehension. The director of the school said that my points were very good so I could begin For me it wasn't the test that was difficult, because I studied and prepared as hard and as good as I can. The banks didn't gave me the money that I needed to start my program and from that day on I am still trying to get the money. They just don't let le lend the money even if I did pass for the exam. Sometimes life is hard but we have to be harder, so don't give up, don't be afraid of the challenges up a head. I hope that I have helped you Th

+Mentour Pilot Hey Mentour Pilot, you're videos are very clear, concise and informative. I really couldn't have thought of all those important things that we have to consider without watching your videos. My dream is to be an airline pilot and I am going to apply to flight school in a year or two hopefully. I also have few questions about the pilot selection tests. 1. What is the difference between psychometric test and aptitude test (I mean are they both the same thing that are used interchangeably)? 2. Are the aptitude tests used in cadet pilot selection in flight schools the same as the ones that are used when applying for a regular job e.g warehouse job, supermarket job., or are the aptitude tests focused on the pilot job? 3. If it's possible, can you please make a video explaining the different types of aptitude tests that are used in cadet selection, e.g spatial awareness, numerical reasoning etc 4. Also, what is a technical reasoning test? Thank you very much!
