The old Wet and Dry filters are still around and can be bought quite cheaply in good condition. Spares are available from Eheim who support their old filters going back for decades.
2.3 litre booster: geni.us/2bj1
The best way to set the trays up is to go for all biological media and use a booster to house the foams.

A good alternative to his filter is the Oase Biomaster 850 which has an easy clean pre-filter and the 'thermo' version has the added benefit of housing the heater to keep the tank less cluttered.

A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Remember to use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

Really random question, would hydroton work as a bio media?
@pondguru
@pondguru 2 года назад
@@ziluq6836 Compared to many of the ceramic types of media out there Hydroton is quite good and would work well in this type of scenario which is a wet / dry environment. It has nowhere near the available surface area of Biohome or even a decent porous sintered glass / ceramic media but it is very cheap and considering the cost it's very effective too for aerobic bacteria to colonize. That's what I use as a substrate in my hydroponic vertical growing towers in the greenhouse and the lettuce are huge.

I bet not many people remember the predecessor of this filter. It was the Eheim Aqua-puls internal wet and dry filter. It was brilliant technology and my favorite filter. It came out around 1994 and went off production very quickly, not because it was bad but because this filter was introduced not long afterwards and replaced it.
@pondguru
@pondguru Год назад
That's one I've never heard of and the information online is almost non-existent. It sounds interesting.
@midnightteapot5633
@midnightteapot5633 Год назад
@@pondguru Yes it is very obscure now, perhaps because it made a very brief appearance. You had to silicone the mounting brackets onto the glass, and it had to be positioned so the water level in the tank would always stay within about a two-to-three-inch range of the overflow inlet. It was also quite difficult to get in and out of a water filled tank for cleaning, but that would only be once in a blue moon. Water would run down into two efisubstrat filled chambers, that would fill and empty alternately every four or five seconds. It quite amazed me actually! Under the filter compartments was some kind of ball shaped float and a standard Eheim water pump to send the water back up to the top outlet nozzle. I had fantastic plant growth and clean water with this filter. Completely silent aside from a glug noise as each chamber emptied. I found the 1990, s to be the great days of filter innovation and quality. It was exciting to see what would come out next. Nothing like it now.

At last. Thanks. I have been using such a filter (with a heater) for about two years and I know there are at least two secrets of its efficient and silent operation. Please read the filter manual carefully and pay attention to 1. the gap between the water level in the aquarium and the position of the filter, and 2. the position of the air pipe outlet. The first ensures that the wet-dry cycle will occur at all. (Please use the filler inlet valve to adjust.) The second means that the filter is completely silent. Noise is not a feature of this filter, but the inability to operate it. My aquariums are in my bedroom, so I've read a lot about it and before finding a solution in some forgotten American cichlid forum, I realized that 99 percent of people don't know how to use this amazing filter. Thanks again. Greetings from Berlin.

The APS pre-filters aren't totally without issues. I use them on all of my filters (JPL) and unless you can site them above the filter then it can be a bit of an ache to get the siphon started! You also have to keep an eye on them when you clean them out as they can leak even when assembled properly as they seem to be very fussy about the alignment of the lid and even being slightly off upsets them. Their upside is as you say, having the pre-filtration outside the canister is a boon, there is space in the bottom of them for settlement media (tho sometimes you can hear it moving about!) and I use better quality taps to be able to remove them for cleaning. They keep my main canister media spotless.

The filter you have there is the Eheim 2229 which has 3 trays, I have the 2227 which has 2 trays. I have had mine for about 15 years & it's an amazing filter. The filter did not come with the media shown in the video, but Eheim Substrat Pro Bio-Filter Medium in all the trays & no pre-filter sponge, so it would clog up in a few weeks & I was forever cleaning it out. After investing in a pre -filter sponge on the intake pipe, I came up with the idea 10 years ago of using my old Fluval 304 half filled with sponges & half bio media as a pre-filter, much as what you suggested. It now filters a 450 gallon heavily stocked tank with no problems at all. The intake sponge gets cleaned once a week, the 304 get cleaned every 2 months & the 2227 every 4 months even though the media is still very clean, the impeller gets a bit noisy with the muck that builds up around it. DO NOT PUT SPONGES IN THESE FILTERS any flow restriction will stop the wet & dry operation, but it was nice to see you try & pimp this great filter!

You have been and continue to be a massive inspiration to hobbyists. I mean , double egg crate sponges of coarse and medium can only increase surface area. My Worry has been , for some time now , that sintered glass media, as you , your very good self have demonstrated, is incredibly absorbent.

Hi Ponguru, thx for those filter pimping videos. In general, it would be very fine, if you could test filters as well at the end. For example waterflow decrease after filling the filter with media or noise level in decibels. Noise and waterflow reality is something what may differ them a lot.

Grab my popcorn and settle in to geek out around biohome every time I get the notification. Got an Oase Biomaster 600 crammed full of it, and after 4 months I have started to notice a slow reduction of nitrates. A dozen cichlids in a 240 litre tank would usually drive the nitrates to over 40 PPM within a week. It now sits at 30 PPM after a whole week now so allows me to do my weekly water change safe in the knowledge that my fish won't be in too bad a spot come water change Saturday. If it keeps reducing the nitrates in the coming months then I will take that

Those R the things that are broken on alll my filters from that series. Wonderfull filters other wise. Think I got 3 of them in desperate need of new fasteners... All my filters is either Fluval or Eheim and Eheim is my favorite. Got one 3 and a 3e the biggest ones and soo good filters. PRO II is Still great but all corners fasteners is broken. also the NOS ones does not hold up to date. The PRO3 Series retainers is mush more sturdy and still holding the pumpheads strong and fast. I bought a 2329 (the large 3-tray model with heater in the bottom) new in 2003. It still runs, celebrating 20 years of flawless operation this year. I did change all gaskets, the impeller's center pin and one of the 4 locking clamps in 2014. I also purchased a fresh impeller without actually having a need for it but enjoying the comfort in putting a brand new part to work. ☺️

As far as I can remember it was around 19/20mm diameter pipe (internal measurement) but I'm sure that the exact measurements will be on Eheim's website. With regard to the air inlet / water inlet I can't remember what size or configuration that was as the filter was sent to me to upgrade then I returned it - Eheim will know the answer.

So further to that very well demonstrated porosity. I cannot in all good conscience, see how , such porosity has a door that can be closed to create an ostensibly no oxygen environment for the Bacteria that particularly likes to chomp on Nitrates. Could it be , you are relying on a fine particulate in the aquarium to close the back door and the front door of the chambers in biological filter media. Surely then it’s absorbency would be curtailed . In point of fact , Anoxic Bacteria will be and ever has been ( obviously in the planted aquarium aside ) the primary Nitrate consumer. So , If you have a good flow on your filter ( which to be fair , is essential for the profligatiion of aerobic Bacteria ) You are absolutely relying on anaerobic environments. If you create anaerobic environments within your filter you will by default be deliberately and knowingly restricting the provision of oxygen that the aerobic bacteria so essentially needs to break down fish waste , which , of course is lethal to fish. In short sir, but biohome ultimate by all means but stick it in the very bottom of your aquarium with the gravel/sand on top of it to create the conditions in which anoxic bacteria will thrive.

I did just now & im getting the vibe there’s some scam going on or something? Someone posing as you on telegram?

There is someone posing as me asking people to go to Telegram - I have never been on Telegram and have just banned the account posting the spam messages. Not sure what was going on there but it definitely wasn't me. I've been to see what Telegram is and it seems to be a mobile only messaging app? I've no interest in that nonsense. Hopefully there will be no more spam messages here but it does happen from time to time.
