I MADE A BALLS OF COUNTING THE BAGS OF MEDIA - CORRECT FIGURES BELOW
The FZone 22 litre canister filter in this video took 2 x coarse foams, 1 x medium grade foam and 1 x fine pad as the mechanical filtration.
If you are concerned about the fine pad being crushed avoid using one single huge bag of media or cut a round plate from filter grid to separate pad and media.
The biological side of the filtration was 15 x 500g mesh bags of Biohome Ultimate and 2 x 1kg mesh bags of Biogravel which took the total weight of media used in the video to 9.5kg.
If no fine pad was used the another 4 x 500g mesh bags of Biohome Ultimate could be added taking the total media weight up to 11.5kg and if a single large bag of loose media was used the total media weight could be estimated at 13kg-14kg.
It's a beast......although I think the 6000 lph pump is too big. Time will tell.
Recommended tank size with current set up (aiming for FULL cycle):
Normal stock tropical: 1050 litres / 276 US gal.
Heavy stock tropical: 525 litres / 138 US gal.
Coldwater (e.g. Goldfish) : 525 litres / 138 US gal.
Marine (using Biohome Ultimate Marine & Biogravel Marine): : 525 litres / 138 US gal.
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Remember to use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

How much wattage is the pumphead? That plays a big role in how long it can keep going. Can't find it anywhere?
@Helmetbolt
@Helmetbolt 2 года назад
I have had this filter running for a week now. The pump is virtually silent. In fact the loudest component on my system is the fans on my light unit. I am running the pump at 80% (The control box lets you adjust the amount of flow) in a 560 litre tank. The water output flow is directed diagonally to the opposite corner of the tank. the surface movement reaches the opposite corner comfortably. I am very pleased with it so far.

@@OriginalMindTrick I am running it in conjunction with a Fluval FX6, I have used The FX5 and 6 over the years. The flow is on par with the FX6 even though it is crammed with 9.5kg of media compared to the 5kg that is in the FX6. and the noise level is just as quiet or quieter than the FX6. I have it positioned outside of my base unit on show, whilst the FX6 is inside the unit.

For that sized canister filter , I would use another canister filter as a pre - filter with only filter pad so that I could periodically do maintenance on that pre - filter and kept that main canister filter free from gunk . That filter will be very heavy with water in it .

Exactly what I always do with my biggest cannisters like the 23 liter Rhrim classic XXL. No way with 7 aquariums I want to take everything apart just because of that fine white floss. MAYBE, if I had 1 Aquarium. But thta is rarely the case for Fishlovers! 😀
@OriginalMindTrick
@OriginalMindTrick 2 года назад
Would like to see how noisy the filter is in operation and how much the flow is in a real case scenario when it's filled with media and with a head height of 1+ meters. You could easily fit another pump as long as it has a 25mm hose fitting if it turns out to be crap which is a very good thing.
@nicksavage4763

Would like to see you do a video About Pre-Filter. Adding those miniature Powered can filters meant for smaller tanks. That have foam layers and built in small pump. Attach the outflow Tube to the Intake of the Larger Cannister Filter to Keep most of the main muck Out of larger filter adding much more time In between tear down for cleaning.
@CrazyAquariumGuy

Exactly what I do. Then you can go 1 - 1,5 year inbeetween opening the biggest one. Watch my channel if you want. I do pretty much the same thing, BUT no fine floss in the bottom. I have to many big filters and aquariums to clean and change fine white floss. MAYBE, if I only had 1 tank. But that is rarerly the case for most aquarium guys and gals. 😀

Hi really enjoy your videos and advice, I bought a F Zone 15 litre to run on my 300ltr tank, bought it 7 months ago, it was expensive and the import tax hurt, but i wouldnt be without it now, it is completely silent, easy to clean, I filled it with the Freshwater 3kg External Filter Upgrade Kit from Filter Pro, there is probably enough room for 3k more Biohome ultimat media, but i am not sure if that would improve any thing. 10 out of 10 for the 15ltr version of this filter

Yeah, but what is the wattage on the head? If it is under 45 there is no way that it will be strong enough. Eheim classic XXL has 65 w. And if you have fine predilter on the intake it is much better than that thick super fine white stuff. You are going to have to clean it often, just because that one is clogged up fast. Another fine sponge and if the pump heade is strong, ypu can do it every 14 months insted of once every 2 months.

If I can only get enough biogravel in my filter for 46 gallons but I have a 55 can I stick some bio home ultra under my gravel to make up the difference or will I still not quite get a full cycle ? Just use a deep sand bed. People are so affraid of that. I never vaccum my gravel and always keep it deep mix different sizez. That ads natural filtration in the deep sand/gravel. Biohome is over kill. Choose something like bags with Aqua Nova. They even come in bags with zippers. Fill the bottom with that, the put sand and fine crushed koral on top. And you get the effect. The white pad is quite bouncy and not floppy like some of them however if you were concerned about the fine pad then you could easily cut a filter mesh and use it between the fine pad and media just as I've done in some previous videos.

What do u recommend ppi for coarse foam and fine foam
@ThousandYardStare
@ThousandYardStare Год назад
As long as they get progressively finer don't worry about PPI ratings. In the UK we tend not to use PPI ratings but as a guide the coarse foam would be around 15PPI and the medium foam would be around 30PPI as an estimate. Fine would be filter floss / fine particle matting but if it was bought as a foam it would probably be nearer 50-60PPI.

could this be used on a small pond?
@CrazyAquariumGuy
@CrazyAquariumGuy Год назад
Yes, but pond filters are so much more filter for the money, and it is usually no problem with the noce, because most you can dig down in the grounds. So I would save money and get a pond filter. BUT pimp it. Exampe, I have a video on it. JBL sales an medication, exatly the same price, but 10 times more, because they know a pond is going to be huge. So always look at pod equipment to save money. Even with pads and stuff. If they are in the aquarium website, it is the same sponge, but just 10 times more expensive.

The pump is designed to run on US voltage ... how can one use it in UK?
@pondguru

With a plug in converter - they are really cheap on Amazon. Search for a '240v-110v step down plug in converter' and results should come up.

Always look for pads and foams, medication on Ponds sites. Aquarium sites have the exact same stuff, 10 times more expensive.
