Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

This is called humility! The ways of the Buddhas. Only one alms bowl, few robes, few basic things, no home, no permanent place to live, no vehicles, no titles, nothing to call or claim his own. His own choice! May all sentient beings be happy and safe. In Metta to all.

Hi Bhante Dan. Thank you for this rare Pindapata journey video. I do not have the chance to be in Sri Lanka. This video allows me to see its people and its Buddhist culture. I salute you for your austere discipline practices and also going for alms daily. I am also able to witness the Dana generosity of the Sri Lanka people. I am touched by the continuity of the Theravada Buddhism spirit that preserved till this day.. May you all in Sri Lanka be healthy and blessed. Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu

Phra Dan, today I understood this Dhammapada verse while contemplating this Pindaptha video 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Dhp 49 From… Puppha Vagga: Flowers As a bee gathers nectar from the flower and flies away without harming the flower’s beauty or its fragrance, just so the sage goes on his alms round in the village.

Could you explain Bhante how it's all arranged? How the people know that you will come? Do you walk the same street everyday at the same time? It feels very spontaneous. In the West, if you would come to someones home without any announcement you could get at best a Banana or a can of SPAM. Yet some gave you cooked meals in the morning. How big is this town? How many ascetics do this population need to support? How do they know how much food to prepare? Have you tried something like this in Europe? Why is it practical in Asia, and not so much in Europe?
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 7 месяцев назад
Very spontaneous, and is now as it was on the first day here. I trust in Buddhist faith anywhere. Even though I am the only monk collecting alms here you can see why. Be happy and stay well.

Venerable, I’ve noticed you’ve stopped to chant some blessings few times on your alms round. But, you didn’t do this every time someone stopped you to give dana. I was wondering why? Thank you 🙏
@englishmonk

Monks are not supposed to give blessings or correspond in any way whilst collecting alms, but sometimes I can't resist it. Be happy and stay well

Dear Bhante, it seems like a lot of food for one person. Is all of this for one meal a day? What happens to what remains?
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 5 месяцев назад
Yes and the abundant surplus is distributed to local recipients in need. Thank you for watching and your comments. I will talk about this in a Q&A's video coming soon. ru-vid.com/group/PLiX6s1kV1fRMCQyR6F7b6HxXuBUn9Zgck&si=7nWb2Y5dT2JpZjzj Be happy and stay well.

@@englishmonk Thank you for your insightful answer. Sharing surplus food is a commendable practice that highlights the interdependence of all phenomena (dhammas). In these modern, challenging times, which might also affect the life and practices of a Theravada monk, is it permissible to store food (excluding medicinal food) for a prolonged period, or does the original rule stated in the training codes (Patimokkha) still prevail?
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 5 месяцев назад
No storing food the Patimoka prevails.
