This tutorial shows how to use scrap silver to make fun and interesting free-form castings that can be used for all different fun designs. I ended up making a pendant featuring an 8x10 mm faceted Peridot with the results this time. For materials, I used 12 (2.01 mm), 14 (1.6 mm), and 18 (1.02 mm) gauge sterling round wire, and some scrap sterling silver. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux, but also used some easy past solder to mount the prong setting.

I love this technique! It’s one of the first things I learned many moons ago. So fun, so organic, and so many variations. I’ve used pine needles, broom straw and juniper bush to see what different shapes you can get. If you don’t have a bowl or extra tweezers, we put the needles upright in an old coffee can. I also remember soaking the needles/straw in water first. Less smoke.👍😁

It does look really nice, organic but sparkling ✨ with a faceted stone of substance... like tree bark with a hidden translucent green fairy treasure. I would like it with a hand cut and polished freeform cab like fossilized wood or agate, or fire opal oooo endless possibilities! Thanks Chad !!!

I love how that turned out Chad! Another fun project to add to my list of things to try! I've tried water casting and that resulted in some pretty cool shapes. Time to go gather some scraps and go play! Thank you for another great tutorial! Have a great day!

Hey Chad, thanks for another great video! What a cool idea. I'd love to see you make a video about water casting sometime. For anyone that's never tried that, it's essentially just dumping the molten silver straight from the crucible into a container of water. In my experience, it results in some cool-looking organic designs. If you play around with the amount of silver and the shape and depth of the water container, it is possible to get a cool organic design on top of the cooled silver and a somewhat flat bottom, which can be ideal for pendants or earrings. Just make sure that whatever container you're using isn't going to melt if the silver is still a bit hot when it hits the bottom. Actually, the pendant that I wear most of the time is from a water casting with a blue topaz trillion set in it. Anyway, keep up the good work! I'm going to have to try the broom casting technique sometime.

I've done water and broom casting as well as casting in coffe beans, rock salt, spaghetti, and dried peas. The best results were with water, broom and peas. I got a really nice (three dimensional) and big (40 grams) in the peas that I decided I can't cut into pieces so it stays as a decoration (paper weight? 😅). I've done pendants from two of the water castings adding a small round cz to each and one from the broom casting adding a small pearl. Each cast yealds unique material so very nice to see yours! Especially liked the three ring bail as it mirrors the vertical lines in the casting!

I tried some various pasta styles a few years back and got similar results too. Rotini produced a look much like bean casting.

Hey Chad, another way you could do broadcasting is to put the Pineneedles in an aluminum can like an old soup can and fill it with water. Help the silver and poured in the can.

Gorgeous and unlocks creativity ! I was thinking of using marl (coral stone used for construction and roads) for casting but scared it might explode in my face. Any tips on to avoid that ?

@@chadssilversmithing Wow thanks for replying Chad ! Love your videos ! I think I’m going to give it a try by directing the flame away from me and maybe use plexiglass between me and the marl. The marl doesn’t absorb water, has a really interesting texture so that’s a plus…. Too tempting not to give it a try ! :-)
