How can we collect pine tree seeds from local trees? I try to find out! Trees are incredibly important to the earth, but we haven't treated them well for many decades. Helping to grow trees is something that anyone, anywhere can do to help not just their local community, but the world as a whole. With this in mind, I'll be collecting tree seeds from local trees and trying to grow them!
In this video we'll be looking at pine trees and how to harvest pine tree seeds. I document my experience and learning from my first season doing this. It's a pretty straightforward process, especially if we are patient. My hope is that we can use the comments to share tips, tricks and insights that will make this site a robust resource that can help enable people worldwide to grow more trees. Let me know what you think of my methods down below!

Haha! This reminds me of when I was a Junior Forest Ranger 30 years ago. We picked lodgepole pine cones off the tops of the trees that were cut down for lumber. We then filled up these huge gunny sacks that weighed about 100 pounds when full of cones, and then the tree nursery near Smokey Lake Alberta paid us for them. They heat them up in giant ovens to open the cones, and then they get vibrated to get the seeds out. Each batch of seeds is planted, and the seedlings are then sent back out to within a 50 mile radius of where they were picked from in the cones. My crew made a bunch of extra cash to pay for our new coats, spend a day at the Sylvan Lake water park ( which no longer exists ) and go watch Jurassic Park, and A League Of Their Own in the theatre. Good stuff!

"Think global, act local" - Jane Goodall 🤓 Wish they taught how to retrieve seeds in schools. Imagine if every kid had to plant their own trees at a young age to pass their grade?! Thanks for being on the side of nature, Jimmy!

Thanks for the instruction Jimmy. It helped me gather seeds from an Antique 'Flat top' pine on our property in central Victoria In Australia. The tree was planted by the first European inhabitants around the gold rush period. It died approx 20 years ago and we just started clearing it. I now have some seeds to see if we can continue the genetics. Steve

Put them in the fridge then into freezer to mimic the winter that they should go through before planting is the information I found.

Thanks. I'm currently collecting cones from Eastern White Pine trees. I plan to use them to grill Nuernberger Bratwuerstchen. That's how theyre cooked in the Franconian region of Germany.

IMO just collect seeds in February because they already passed stratification. Of course each cone will contain 3-4 seeds and not 30 but propagation rate of those will pay off.

Thanks for the video. How do you collect cones that are more than 30 feet up in the tree? I attached a paper cup to a drone but in 4 attempts I only got 2 seeds. Do you use a long pole sometimes?

A great question, and one that i have wondered myself. Love that you tried with a drone 😂😂 hopefully someone can come along and enlighten us both

I've tried using long limbs to brush cones off higher up branches, it was a little challenging but it did work. 🙃

@Xero-uz5pm I spoke to a tree expert, and he said that they get their seed from a special seed farm where they keep the pine trees short, but the trees still have cones.

Thank You I plan on planting some old scrubby pine seeds located at the Jersey Shore. Not sure what the name of the tree is but they grow in a twisting form and very slowly. I have a mature version of this tree which is about 35 years old and stands 20 ft tall. The cones are small and light green and very tight. Any advice on when I should harvest the cones like you did on this video....Also I would like to plant them in September to grow a few in pots?

Harvest seeds in the fall, you can plant then or in spring. Keep them outside through winter for cold stratification - good luck!

Hi - thanks! I am trying to harvest Araucaria montana or A laubenfelsii seeds which are quite hard to buy commercially. I've found 3 mature trees and figure, from your posts, that the cones should be mature in the fall - is this correct for all Araucaria species? Second question - and it may be a silly one, I'm no botanist. Will all the trees have cones or do some bear cones and others not (e.g. is there a gender or something similar which determines whether they bear cones)? Are all conifers cone-bearing? Are all Araucaria cone-bearing??? Many thanks
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests Год назад
Not super familiar with the araucaria specifically.. but generally yes most conifers put out cones every year is my understanding. They often have two types of cones (male and female) on each tree, vs treea of different genders. Best of luck finding and growing some seed!

I'm a logger. I plant more trees than I take. And these trees have stronger genes.

My white pine trees in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia have dropped what looks like peach pits all around the base of the tree. Are these a different kind of seed? Did they come from inside the cone?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 года назад
Sorry Elizabeth, I've never encountered anything like that, I'm not sure. White pines should have pretty standard looking cones with seeds inside from what I can see.

I found a seed from a pine cone with the little wing on them that are bright pink. My dad is a registered forester and told me it’s from a red bud tree but I looked those up and it doesn’t look like that. It’s looks just like a regular seed as shown on this video but it’s pink. Any ideas?
