Also just noticed you said you play the D7 Forged! I’m gaming those in 4-GW with the $ taper stiff shafts! Funnily enough I do find I get “flyers” quite often out of the semi rough, I can find myself flying a green 190 away with a 7 iron if the conditions are there 😂 very tempted by the Wilson Staff CBs for a bit more control
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
I know what you're saying but I think there's a decent chance of a flyer out of semi rough with any club to be honest. I used a combo set of Staff Model blades to 7 iron and CBs from 6-4 iron for a few months and they are really nice, look great, really soft feel, but a full club less every shot. And when you start hitting into the wind it seems even worse, suddenly when it's a two or three club wind, you start running out of irons to hit! They are nice if you can come to terms with the psychology of having to hit more club.

I'm actually on the D9 Forged at the moment, fractionally nicer looks, just at the back, virtually no difference otherwise. Love them though. Such a good feel and loads of forgiveness plus really powerful.

I bought the i525's and previously used Cobra blades. Not gonna lie, i love them! I've played in Florida and Colorado for several rounds and they have been dead on consistent. The pearl finish does help with wetter shots and getting more distance in the colder Colorado weather has been huge. I'm 100% happy with the i525's and wouldn't trade them out for anything. Lol especially after the investment.

Good to hear, they’re brilliant clubs. Not sure how cold Colorado is compared to the East coast of Scotland in March but distance is good whatever the weather as far as I’m concerned.

Tested both clubs. Really liked the i525 very powerful club but spin can drop off which even with the grooves and hydro pearl helping I think it can still be prone to knuckle balls especially when you catch them a groove higher on the face. I switched from Blades to HMB’s but suffered with knuckle balls quite often especially if you put it on a small tee. I ended up switching back to MP20 blades PW-6i. Been waiting for the i230 seemed to be a better balance, of distance, forgiveness and consistency. High ball flight, goes further than current MP20 and defiantly looking to get these in the bag for 2023 season.

I carry the U through 5 iron in the i525 it’s equal to my mizuno 923 tour 4-p. So same distances with more forgiveness. I still have a 53* 56* 60 wedge set up. High side I have 21* hybrid three wood and driver.

Great review. Pros didn’t use the i59 either because of the hollow body design and being worried about hot shots. If you really think about, one shot going 10 yards further to a pro could cost them a million dollars.

Many thanks for the honest review. I wonder how the two clubs would compare if you used the i230 in the Power loft spec (with similar lofts), would the distances be similar do you think?
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
Yes, they would get a lot closer, I think if I was getting them I would try power spec lofts. I am assuming though that when they bend them it must affect the bounce angle a tiny bit on each iron, I wouldn't want the leading edge to catch the turf too aggressively, I already hit quite hard into the ground at impact with my irons. I've recently sent a set of I525s away to get power spec lofts for a member of staff at the golf club here, so I'll test those out when they come back.

@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
No its the head I'm talking about there, not the shaft length. The long iron head size is the same as the short iron. Quite often, long irons are longer horizontally than short irons to provide added forgiveness on strikes.

I play off of 8 HC and if you believe these 2 clubs are even comparable i guess i dont know what to tell you, they arent even close with 230’s far, far, far superior. I played 525’s last season and traded them in for 230’s after getting fliers all the time. 230’s are the most consistent club i have ever hit in 38 yrs of playing golf. You even said it your review, pros are playing 230’s and not 525’s…and a 20 handicap can easily play the 230’s with their forgivness, consistency and easyness to hit. In the end evenyone has to play what they like and what gives them confidence, but make no mistake, the 230’s are light yrs ahead of the 525’s and quite possibly the best iron ping has ever made.

@@golffm6924 Thanks for the reply. It wasnt that i felt that way, i saw it on my sim. My avg carry 7i was 170 and i would often see 180+ with same numbers such as swing speed, smash, launch angle, ect…then saw same thing on course and it wasnt rare. I liked the clubs but because 525’s are a “players distance” they have a lower launch, which in turn makes holding greens much more difficult, even with a 7 or 8i. With the 230’s i can stop a 5 iron at 190 almost dead.(our greens are pretty soft).

@@golffm6924 Did you say the i230 5 iron is the same length as the 4 iron? I’ve never heard of that. Would seem to tighten the distance gap between the two but would gain more control.
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
The blade length is the same, the actual head size. In the i525 the 4 iron is a bigger longer head than the shorter irons to aid forgiveness. In the i230 the longer irons are the same size as the short irons.

I think the feel ( sound ) is softer and better on the Ping and the Wilson. There is nothing between I525 and D9 Forged in performance, just price. I230 is not quite as powerful, possibly slightly less forgiving and not quite as soft feeling.
@clientbuilding8737
@clientbuilding8737 Год назад
Everyone keeps talking about fliers but the reality is the i230 may not be as forgiving on bad shots so instead of getting more distance than you want with a flier you get less distance with a miss hit. Not sure what is better?
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
Yes, I agree, I suspect the 'flier problem', if it truly exists, is far less of a statistical problem than less forgiveness on miss hits. Someone should do a study on it. But my guess is you're right.
@PNW_Sportbike_Life
@PNW_Sportbike_Life Год назад
The i230s should be more forgiving if I'm not mistaken?
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 Год назад
The i230s are inherently less forgiving than the i525. The i525 is hollow bodied which means the perimeter weighting and therefore the forgiveness is better than the i230. The i230 does deliver a good measure of forgiveness but it's advantage or selling point is more the absolute consistency of result. There is a small chance that a hollow bodied iron may produce a longer than normal shot every now and again. I personally haven't found any issues with hollow bodied clubs in that respect, but I have heard some people claim that they do.

Show me a 7iron that rolls out 12 yards on landing in the real world.
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 9 месяцев назад
I'll try to film a ball landing over here on my course, North Berwick East Links and also Gullane, when 7 irons have as little loft as they generally have now, they're behaving a bit differently when they land. The greens on the East Coast of Scotland are pretty firm most of the year and you always get a big skip or hop forward before the spin tries to take effect, by the time this ha happened you can cover quite a bit of distance from the actual landing spot.
@clintvanzyl8497
@clintvanzyl8497 9 месяцев назад
@@golffm6924 I lived and played in Scotland and yes some courses are hard and the ball rolls out but if you're hiring a7 iron into greens and playing for 12 yards of rollout on anything other than a links course in a windy day then you need some help IMO.
@golffm6924
@golffm6924 8 месяцев назад
I wouldn't even describe it as roll out, that seems misleading, when you see it happening it's the bounce that does most of the work, you always get a 5-7 yard bounce and then the spin tries to stop it but the angle and momentum caused by the bounce means it's struggling to stop very quickly. If greens are firm and create a proper bounce when they land, it can be 12 yards on a pitching wedge never mind a 7 iron on a lot of the courses I play - but yes on inland courses it's completely different.
