Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is one of greatest albums ever created. Why then would Roger Waters want to recreate a new version in 2023? In this video, we explore the story of how Pink Floyd first created The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, and the story of how Roger Waters came to record his redux in 2023.

This is a really great tool idea. Now you need to come up with another one that would totally remove the rest of whatever Roger did on the album, & then it might be worth listening to, but probably not. There is only one DS.

Or David doesn't give a damn about the stuff Roger cares about. David is happy to go through life with his head up his harris, oblivious to the great suffering and corruption of humanity going on around us in this world. Roger cares about the world and the people. Roger is similar in some ways to Syd (Roger) Barrett, without feeling the need for walking away from it all as Syd did.
@markco61
@markco61 2 месяца назад
In my opinion Syd (Roger) and Roger were the soul or original brains behind Pink Floyd. Roger was the most devastated by Syd's loss and paid respect to him in many of the songs he wrote after Syd left the band.
@bigbasil1908
@bigbasil1908 2 месяца назад
@@markco61 Yep Roger is still gutted what happened to this day. I also think Syd gave Roger great inspiration; kind of showed him what is relatively easily possible. Maybe a bit like how the beatles experimentation inspired so many - directly, or indirectly. It seems that Syd pretty much completely walked away from it all, unlike Peter Green who continued to bubble away musically in the background and from what I've seen amassed quite a huge guitar collection. If things had gone differently, I wonder what sort of cool stuff Peter Green and Syd Barrett could have come up with had they gotten together to create some music.

On the whole, Floyd's music without Waters was better than Waters' music was without Floyd, and certainly Waters solo stuff was not nearly as commercially successful.
@SM-bm6jo
@SM-bm6jo 4 месяца назад
You cannot say they chose to continue Floyd just to continue Floyd. The other two aside from Gilmour were choosing the option which included a lucrative future for themselves. Without backing Gilmour they had less success and fortune ahead as soloists. Gilmour already had a successful solo career. Nick Mason is doing the very early PF material on tour. Not many PF fans care for that early material. When RIchard Wright left (was fired by Waters) he did not do anything. He was depressed. He was not inspired to take up a solo career. His new girlfriend was the one who put him back together with Gilmour which eventually led to him regaining a position as a full member of PF. Initially he was brought on as a tour musician for the first post-Waters Floyd tour, not a band member.

When he quit the band he expected everyone else to stop as well regardless of their own feelings on the subject, and when they chose to carry on without him, he tried to take them to court to force them to quit. He lost, discovered that Pink Floyd was more than just Roger Waters, and he has never recovered from that. Its a shame, because he is very talented, its just that his bitterness at not being the most important person in the band overpowers his talent and it is clearly eating him alive.

Word is Ezrin DEMANDED Gilmour do Learning to Fly on Momentary Lapse, that gave them a hit single that propelled the album. Roger had no such producer, Radio KAOS was a great album as well, but there wasn't anything radio friendly, it was literally an album TRASHING radio, so who is going to play it? Roger Waters on his own is about as pop friendly as Roy Harper. Thats probably why the two never got along. Dave is a musician, musicians have a hard time wiht 'songs'. Roger consistently says he doesn’t care about Pink Floyd, but go to a concert and you’ll find that he cares greatly. Roger says he doesn’t care about money, but pay attention to what he does and how he does it, and you’ll find that he cares greatly about money. Sadly, Roger’s best work was collaborative, and as his ability to collaborate diminished and his need to control grew. The greatest epiphany Roger could have is that he needed, and still needs David.

So true. For it was David who taught Roger guitar and bass giving him and Syd lessons before joining the band after Syd's death. And Gilmour easily goes down in the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time. A Guitar World magazine poll of famous guitarists gave Gilmour the #1 guitarist of all time, even ahead of Hendrix. And that was from his peers. There's alot of people that can mimick Hendrix, and do. I haven't heard anyone replicate Gilmour's playing and guitar tone. Because they can't. It's all in his hands. He has a very basic equipment setup baffling everybody. Best hands in the business I say. Good comment.

The fact he still wants to do concerts to pay homage to prior works doesn't mean he is somehow obsessed with money, when I went to see him perform the wall it didn't even cost that much either - he cares a LOT about his music, he doesn't care about the band yes but what music they created he cares a lot about.

You misrepresented the situation with Roger leaving the band. He tried firing Nick and David after having managed to fire Richard, who was brought back as a session musician, claiming that he owned the band and the name. Shortly after, he quit. Nick and David, knowing that Roger couldn't fire them, took control of the band and the name. Roger sued and lost. Eventually, Richard would be made a member of the band again, and Roger was sidelined, unable to make any decisions for the band without the other 3 approving it, which they've never done, because of how petty he had been to them over the years. Roger is an egomaniac and narcissist, and you can believe he's a tragic hero all you want, but don't hide the history to suit your narrative.

No. Richard didn’t contribute to the band at all at that point , and was indeed replaceable. David isn’t replaceable at all, and Nicks contribution is so so. When they split they never made solid agreements, and nick and Richard took David in the scheme of reanimate and make the name Pink Floyd a cashcow. The bombastic stadiumrock is the best in their league, but never ever get to the heights of the original PF. What is it that you value in a band? Do you want your artists to be nice people, completely rational, always doing the right thing? I want my artists to devote themselves to art, to antagonize, to provoke thinking, to take risks and come up with bold ideas. In 1984 that was one person: Roger. That he got eased out and the other three carried on was a decision made by lawyers, not artists. A Momentary Lapse of Reason and everything that followed was utter bollocks. The Final Cut is PF's last album in my mind, and that will never change, no matter how much people like you call names and misunderstand what makes great art.

The opening whingeing from Waters reveals all: Gilmour IS Pink Floyd more than the others, or at least, his guitar is. As great as Waters was, he was no philosopher or novelist: the themes of the music were only valuable in so far as the music brought them to life. And that was thanks to an outsized contribution from Gilmour, which is precisely why Floyd without Waters still sounds like Floyd

The Wall speaks for itself. And the Pro & Cons of Hitchhiking is also a MASTERPIECE!!! They are my favorite band of all time who I discovered as an 8 year old American kid being in military family and moving to Great Britain in 76. I recall sitting In the backseat of the family Celica while my parents were driving us through the British countryside. And a song came over British radio that haunted me and hooked me immediately. I was too young to know who I was hearing. But it’s one of those magical moments in life that permanently engraved itself into my psyche. Sitting in the backseat, taking in the gloomy beauty that only England can and Hearing what I later learned was Pigs on the Wing part 1 over the radio. No one was taking. The skies were grey and raining. Perfect atmosphere for such music. And I never looked back. And fortunately got to see them play back in the day. They’re issues with one another change nothing for me. The magic and majesty of what they created are forever in my soul. Special. Sacred. Magical. Pure bliss that has helped me though many challenges in my own life. I love them all. I don’t know them personally. But I do spiritually. And that’s all I need.

I love the agitation you can feel in the songs that go back and forth between Waters and Gilmour because they are somewhat at opposite ends of a creative spectrum; both genius but very particular about how they feel the song should go but in the end it’s just beautiful and leaves you transformed seeing themes that are way bigger than most musicians ever try to tackle. I always thought as a collaboration type band that Pink Floyd is the best at what they did for music and songs that are eternal and endearing to anyone of any age, anywhere in the world.

Roger already had the precursor inspiration for at least 2-3 tracks on DSOTM, on the "Music From The Body" LP he did with Ron Geesin, nearly 55 years ago. Why he felt compelled to remake an essentially inimitable LP is anybody's guess. Perhaps he really wants younger generations to salute his watershed lyrics that admittedly did carry the LP to an undeniable degree. But to anyone 45 or older, Roger's recent actions come off a lot more like a petulant Taylor Swift, than an inveterate Frost, Keats or Milton.

@mattwuxx Roger lives in a tortured house that he built. I've always enjoyed David Gilmour's solo work more then Waters's. If for no other reason because he understood the _ethos_ of the Pink Floyd sound and sought to maintain its integrity whenever possible. Even at the height of Water's lyrical prowess writing The Wall in 1978, Gilmour already proved he had the Floyd sound licked by writing/producing songs like "No Way Out Of Here". Which again, has way more Floyd energy, than anything Roger ever did solo then or since. Waters has basically spent the last 45+ years trying to prove that his lyrics and "vision" for Floyd, was far more important than anything Gilmour, Wright or Mason ever contributed musically. Roger was proven wrong and Dave and the rest of the guys have the receipts in the millions of satisfied concertgoers and tens of millions in album sales, that Floyd has enjoyed without Waters being anywhere in sight or the band that _he_ left over 40 years ago. I was a sophmore in high school when I was walking down the street with my Walkman on, when I heard a local radio commercial for the "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" tour. All I had to hear were those first two super silky slid blues power chords from "Learning To Fly", and I knew that Pink Floyd was _not_ Roger's band anymore and may have never been. No matter how much Waters whines or tries to claim otherwise.

The fact he made the lyrics the most prominent aspect of the cover proves it is all about him, and not the music. To say that his lyrics were more important than the band - which they weren’t. It’s why he treated Wright terribly. All part of his ego-centric bullying. When you listen to the other members talking about Floyd, they don’t try to belittle his contributions in the way he does about them. Until he catches himself and makes minor ‘cap doffing’ comments. He really should have moved on years ago, but his solo material, as generally most of the bands solo material, was never going to stand the test of time of the overall contributions to the Floyd albums.

DSOTM and The Wall are indelible master works that both emerged from the 70's decade. Pink Floyds collaborative musical achievement in both efforts left a deep and lasting impression among millions. Sure, that said, when it was Pink Floyd DSOTM was a work of perfect genius. Mad Roger goes back to try to make it more relevant. Tough to do with a one of the most iconic LP's of all time. Naturally, he fails. It ends up sounding like so much of his solo material. Just off the mark. @@robertmcmanus9185 Who cares? We all have the original DSOTM. I said nothing about Rogers new version and don't care. Millions enjoy Pinks earlier good stuff. "The Wall" debuted its first time to the World in Los Angeles, Downtown sports arena, in February 1980. I was there. The opening to the Wall was astounding with two drummers and the band wearing stage headphones. The sound clarity of the band punched with an audio quality you would expect from David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, along with a big cast of musicians. The set list was long and wide in musical range. To say it left a large impression would be a huge understatement. The old guys we see today were young looking guys in 1980, obviously. During Pink Floyd's live concerts in the 1980s, Nick Mason had a backup drummer because the band's music often featured complex arrangements and sound effects that were difficult for a single drummer to replicate live.

Roger is a great artist and has the ability to portray his ideas in simple but intelligent way. Unfortunately, he like many creative people, are not good leaders. The problem is he doesn't see that, in his opinion everyone else is at fault for not heeding what he has to say. He makes that apparent when he muses how perhaps people might get it now after it has "been a part of our lives for over fifty years now". I personally don't think Roger has the answers to the right questions, but he is relevant and has many good points and observations. Most artists are not good leaders. For solutions, well, the problem is we can't seem to get society to bring in ANY solutions. I congratulate anybody making a public stand, because it only puts crosshairs on you. As for music, keep in mind Dave isn't the producer of floyd albums either. Bob Ezrin and others usually are. Roger was so pissed off at Ezrin that he put him in a song when he chose floyd over waters. Waters knows its the producer who can make hits. Dave is a musician and would just play forever. Roger writes songs but they aren't commercial. They owe most of their success to producers and engineers. @@neilmclennan7191 I said it took Bob Ezrin to make HITS. There are thousands of 'good albums', but without hits you generally don't go far. Money was a hit off Dark Side, but Waters wrote it as a blues acoustic. They 'sissied it up', but it also got radio play and helped make them millionaires. There are millions of great musicians in the world, there's a reason nobody crows about David Gilmour or Rick Wrights solo albums. Waters had better songs and concepts, but his albums never went any further. I don't even understand your other point. Roger is on Ukraine's 'kill list', so it takes guts to stand up and make your feelings known. I see no way that an artist talking to an interviewer is 'distracting' from anything, you are certainly under no obligation to listen to them. It sounds more like you don't agree wiht his views, which is fine, but that doesn't change the fact it takes guts to be an artist and say the things he does. Granted, I don't spend that much time thinking about him or congratulating him, I'm just glad he does it and wish more would. But then I've also said that its a good way for him to get free publicity for his tours as well, so like I said, I congratulate him for being openly political, but don't get carried away with it.

I think with the redux version, it's meant to give priority to the message. With the original Dark Side album, people might not be focused so much on the message and the lyrics but rather the music (like David's guitar solos, Dick Parry's saxophone solos, Rick and Clare's input on Great Gig, etc.). So maybe the new recording are intentionally not meant to be superb so people can focus on the message of the lyrics. That's my take on it.

I went on the "This is Not a Drill" tour and what caught my attention was not "Antoher Brick in The Wall" massively driving audiences of various generations crazy, but Roger's solo songs. They touched me deeply. Some I didn't know and I became a double fan. Roger sings many songs from his solo career, Pink Floyd versions and of course, re-recordings are natural. Roger has been an outsider for a LONG time; it runs in his family. He remembers a lot of pain in his family caused by the War Industry that's so popular on this planet. His father decided to go and fight in the war because he realized it would be better for his family(after the war) if he had been a combatant; he WAS an ambulance driver. Roger's father NEVER refused to serve his country. The Italian campaign(where he died) was very badly bungled by the British and the American armies both. In ALL wars, there's a large percentage of the combat troops that are commanded by feckless, imbecilic senator's sons and aristocrat's sons that were dropped on their heads when they were small; and by design, those Regiments are sent to the non-critical battles. When Roger's father decided to go, the Italians had been beaten like a gong and that part of the war SHOULD have been less deadly. However, by the World War, Part 2, the German military had figured out this "War" stuff very well and they killed and hurt a LOT of good people in a lot of places. People were killed and mangled up to and including the last day of the war. Roger is not hateful or Anti-semetic; he just thinks there's better ways to solve problems than to kill large numbers of people in noisy unpleasant scrums, and he has a bully pulpit and something to say and so he's decided to speak up on those things he's vitally interested in, because somebody may be listening to his message. He - like MANY people - are very upset about the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. He wishes they would stop, and knows that they won't. But Roger is enough of an outsider to be aware that for the majority of people on this planet, the best-selling album "Dark Side of the Moon" is mostly exquisite background noise they heard when they were younger and stronger(and healthier), and often were influenced by ethanol or marijuana smoke(and other party favors). That's more than half of the planetary population, who think of this music as pleasant ambient noise which they have repeated thousands of times EACH over a period of 50 YEARS ! ! Its a disappointment to read that you think he's a genius and yet he mistakenly re-imagined his magnum opus because he was misled by others who convinced him to make a record that didn't measure up to your expectations.

I own the redux version and have played it a couple of times. IMHO it's a completely unnecessary release. What Waters seems to forget is that DSOTM was a group effort and was not just about the lyrics.

Why does it deny any of the members making their own version? I guarantee no one would be saying it shouldn't exist just because they were only a fraction of the sum if Gilmour had made his own rendition.

@flyk3n I'm a fan of Gilmour too and I'm pretty sure that he wouldn’t waste his time re-recording old Floyd albums and adding his own words instead of Waters.

There's no denying the skills of Roger as a lyricist, musician, composer etc. but oh my...the personality.....probably etched into a lot of characters in his creations. I'm so glad Floyd created so much material before the fall out !!!!!!

It’s sad how folks who made such classic works bicker. I think Roger’s embrace of social media and venom has tarnished the whole, the cohesive nature of the push and pull to achieve greatness. Only they know what went down but I just want great art. He loves controversy but I just love the music. I guess it’s the fact that I don’t like the parents fighting. I haven’t heard the redux. I will give it a spin. Have you done a video on Radiohead. Ironically they still seem like a well known secret and continue, not unlike the Floyd musical signposts, continue to inspire me. One speaks of the world I was born of and the other, the even more fraught world we are blindly being led into.‘Ambition makes you look pretty ugly’….. I hear it differently depending on my mood. I feel lucky to have the gift of joy, and artists to fill my cup.

Roger is caught in a loop of bitternes and nostalgica. To record Dark side of the moon again indicates that something is missing in his life.

Yes-- what’s missing is the energy and passion to write new material. Thus, his decision to simply re hash old material for the money and soak his fans yet again.

The irony being had he released yet another remaster of DSOTM it probably would have sold better than this thing. I’ll be honest, I didn’t buy it and after listening to it once I can honestly say I will never ever need to listen to it again. Meanwhile, I just listened to the Endless River and On An Island this past week.

He was able to hit a resonant and produce a piece of art which transcended humanity. It's amazing. The prism is the most well-recognized image on the planet. He's just too much of an ego-maniac to leave it alone. He thinks he can improve upon it or some nonsense. In that way, he completely misunderstands art. You have to place it in the correct time and you can't fix it after it's been released. 1973 was the correct time, but that window has closed. You can remaster the tapes a million times. It might be different, but it will never be better.

Trying to understand floyd and their creative differences is like trying to understand Israel and palestine. Floyd are nothing GREAT without Gilmore. But we recognise Rogers input and vision. It's a real shame they didn't land together creatively.

This video stirs up 2 emotions. 1, When Pink Floyd were inducted into the Grammys Hall of Fame, David, Rick and Nick were present. A point was made that 2 more "Grammy's" were needed. One for Sid and one for Roger. 2, re-interpreted albums can be fraught with danger. I recently purchased U2, Songs of Surrender. A re-interpretation of 20 of their well known songs. I've listened to it once, and will probably not listen again for a long while. Didn't work for me. But, I did buy it because I support the band.

I don't think a lot of people understand what a gift this re-recording is... Up intill now, we've lived in a reality where Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands that ever lived. This allows Pink Floyd fans to experience a world where Pink Floyd sucked...

I think that is the pettiest response ever. Waters is an ego narcissist, and can’t stand the fact that Pink Floyd existed without him. Even more, the fact that he lost in court all rights to the name, and even worse that he has to split royalties with the band members, because in his head he believes that all that music is HIS and not theirs. When Taylor Swift re-recorded her albums for a completely different reason. He probably thought, why can’t I do the same. I believe Waters was extremely talented, but the other members of PF completed him. On the other hand the band had 3 very successful albums without RW, while he keeps singing The Wall over and over and over. I believe ha had a few solo albums, but nothing anyone remembers. And if you know anything about narcissist, they never go away, and will never admit defeat, so this feud is far from over.
