You're right about the animal farm comparison, this album uses the same archetypes from that book to comment on capitalism As for dogs, the song is about the rich and successful in a capitalist society who live a life of greed and self interest, with the stone symbolizing the loneliness and guilt created by this kind of life. that's why the sheep rise up against the dogs, yes the pigs act as the politicians in this case but the dogs are the ones who directly take advantage of the sheep (working class)

What a fantastic reaction David! You got so much out of a first listen. And each time you listen you will get rewarded over and over and over again. You will enjoy the official "2018 remix" of this album where you can hear layers in the music that were not so easy to hear on this recording. I had Wish You Were Here as my favourite Pink Floyd album for years, but now I regard Animals as their best work!

You’re absolutely right, The album concept is inspired by the novel "animal farm" that talks about animals rebel against the farm owner. In the context of the album, pigs represent the politicians and people in power, dogs represent the army, the police or anyone who represents the authority and learned to only obey the law, and sheep represent average people.
This album was based loosely on George Orwell's small book "Animal Farm." So well-played on remembering your high school book. Dogs, Pigs, Sheep. Farm animals revolt against the farmer but then install a similarly oppressive government with Pigs in charge and Dogs serving the Pigs as enforcers. The Sheep are, of course, the clueless suckers. To quote Pete Townshend of the The Who in "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
Albums don't get much closer to perfection than this one, but one that does rise to this level IMO is Aja from Steely Dan. The approach to its making is quite interesting and practically the stuff of legend.
I loooooong ago forgot the details of Animal Farm, but my take on the last track is that--in the absence of dogs--the pigs won't be able to withstand the sheep. The final part of Sheep (in my interpretation) is that the sheep are giving the pigs a warning; namely, that they're about to get a taste of their own medicine. Never thought about it from the perspective you gave, but I definitely will ponder it! This is my all-time favorite album from my all-time favorite band. I flip-flop on whether Dogs is my fave track from PF, or if it's Echoes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, or Atom Heart Mother.
I was going to try to listen to more pink floyd albums to add to my playlist but never really found the time. Found this video and ended up watching it. Very worth it to see another person's reaction while also listening to a full album.

the dogs and the sheep are one in the same (upper working class and lower working class) divided into the classes by the pigs. at the end of sheep, they rebel against the dogs, and immediately go to abuse their new power, essentially becoming just like the dogs. the album is just an in-your-face metaphor for our animalistic tendencies, and the constant cycle perpetuated by those truly in charge i see pigs on the wing pt 1 and 2 as a symbol of hope, breaking the cycle by having sympathy, represented by the pig flying over the factory on the cover artwork. also a reference to the old saying "if pigs could fly" i always loved this album sonically, but when the lyrics really clicked for me it had me so insanely emotional
I love watching first timers react to the drop on dogs even though I know it’s coming I listen to it countless times since the day it came out it still does the same thing to me
The vocalization on the 2nd track Dogs, kind of reminds me the singing style of Jeff Buckley in the song Grace. The pace and rhythm of the two songs very similar. I wouldn’t be surprised if Buckley was inspired by Pink Floyd! Both are great artists :)
If you dig this album - try the 2018 remix (should also be on streaming). One of the few cases where a modern remix actually adds new life to a classic album. Fun fact (and even you picked up on it in your comments after the album ended that Pigs On The Wing is basically one song): The bass player / singer decided to break up Pigs on the Wing into two little songs with sole songwriting credit, basically diluting everyone else in the band's share of songwriting from the other tracks (everything gets split between 5 songs instead of 4, and he's the sole writer for 2 of the 5 now). This argument was a big step towards the band breaking up a few years later. I guess you could say he was acting kinda like a Pig himself :)
The Pink Floyd journey... Usually starts with a love for songs from Dark Side of the Moon... Then said person begins to hear songs from both Wish You Were Here and The Wall... As the said person matures... ANIMALS begins gathering steam.... Soon, a realization that the concept of this album still holds true to this day becomes apparent.... Finally...Dogs is quite possibly the best Pink Floyd they ever recorded!! 😂😂😂😂
If you want to get some Pink Floyd throwbacks, you should listen to their first album “Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. It’s their only album without David Gilmour and featuring founding member Syd Barrett as the lead guitarist. You should also check out Atom Heart Mother, it features a 23 minute track similar to Echoes, and highlights each individual member in each song in the middle with a very funny 15 minute song at the end
The eerie part with the descending diminished guitar IS the return of the "Here boy" dog whistle to top off the return of the stone. The dogs are fooled by the dog whistle of the pigs, and the sheep are fooled by the dog whistle of false prophets promising to save them. Genius composition.

With such fantastic musicians, there are albums that I find brilliant when in the right mood, then there are those that are so accessible that I can always listen to them. Animals, Atom Mother Heart track (if possible a live band recording) ... belong to the first, Dark Side (my first album in 1972 when I was 14), Echoes von Meddle, Shine on Y.C.D.... belongs to the second . In recent months I have been "exploring" the roots of PF, mainly live recordings from BBC Sessions, Fillmore West, Sheffield, Montreux, KQED US TV, .... . I found ingenious recordings and song versions that will surely accompany me to the end of my life.
Roger Waters was a huge admirer of the fantastic writer and human being George Orwell, so when he wrote this album think about Orwell's satirical, political fable Animal Farm and this album becomes clearer.

an amazing piece of art that would later be one of most defining records in the vaporware scheme would be the ghost~pop tape by Devon Hendryx(Jpegmafia). This would fuck your mood so hard with its toxically online and sexually deprived sound but im pretty sure you would like it.:)
@@David-iv6je i do think his guitar work is consistently great from Dark Side to The Wall. But in my opinion, The Wall have his best guitar work. Great riffs, solos, lead work, Gilmour is just a top tier guitarist.
@@Ursaokkkk For me THE top. I'd rather listen to him than anybody else. He can do slide and acoustic, right hand folk picking, whatever, in addition to his masterful electric. And then he's also a top tier vocalist.
