This is THE definition of the Ultimate Concert Experience! So many individual elements executed perfectly together to become the end result and experience...and to do this for a whole tour...lucky whoever got to experience this in person! And their final tour on top of everything else! Thanks so much for watching with me. Don't forget to subscribe for much more Pink Floyd in the future! 🥰

Those spinning lights you're seeing are actually spinning Leslie speakers! It may be something more advanced than a spinning Leslie speaker someone corrected me earlier but the spinning speakers gives the music a more three-dimensional sound! When Pink Floyd sets up their sound system for a concert they make sure that the sound you hear is like you're inside the speakers! You will never hear a more complete unbelievably perfect Soundsystem then at a Pink Floyd concert live! I know that because I've seen them four different times in three different decades and I've seen about 100 concerts from AC DC Led Zeppelin and everyone in between alphabetically and never seen a better show than Pink Floyd puts on!

Wow, yet another element that is next level compared to everyone else! They really went out with a bang in terms of a tour as the complete band!

The way I understand it is that the sound system produced a total of 232,000 watts...absolutely astounding! Thanks for the tidbit about the spinning lights...as many times as I've watched Pulse, I never even noticed the speakers in there...

I have to agree. I'm extremely picky when it comes to the sound of my music. Seen very close to the same number of concerts over the yrs. Seen Floyd their last 3 tours. Each got better than the last. Sound was crystal clear loudness and you wanted more.
@royrocker9004
@royrocker9004 Год назад
I agree. I seen them 4 times and have attended well over 200 concerts, and just like you, I have seen all of the greats, and no one puts on a better show, the lights, the sound, it just takes you to a special place, unlike anything else. You can try to tell people about how amazing it is, but until someone actually experiences a live show, they wont be able to fully appreciate just how great it is.

The Pulse Tour was far ahead of its time. Nobody had previously pulled off anything like this in terms of sound engineering and the light show, which was computerized (unheard of before!) And as far as I can tell, even more than a quarter of a century later, nobody has ever since pulled anything off that would be comparable. A performance of a lifetime that has its place in music history! And the second solo of Comfortably Numb is probably the best guitar solo ever played on this planet!

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. Hard to explain how awesome that moment was in my life. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS

There were also three female vocalists who added allot to the mix. I have read that the pull on the electric grid was greater than any concert before or since…..huge. I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show Syracuse Carrier Dome in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all. When the “Disco Ball’ was uncovered and the lights hit it….. WHAT IS HAPPENING was what I said….The entire crowd was held in a trace and our minds totally blown by what we witnessed.

The stank-face when that guitar solo reaches its climax is involuntary, and I love that lol. My only regret about attending this show is that I peaked early; nothing since has come close to the sheer majesty of this concert. At our outdoor venue, the crystal ball/flower was mounted closer to the stage, but it was no less an out-of-body experience when that whole segment unfolded...pun intended. The entire show is a must-watch as you mentioned, but if I may recommend two others: "Sorrow" and "Run Like Hell", the latter of which was the final encore and they went a little nuts with it.

I’ve heard two reasons why it was cut, one us that it had to fit the CD, another is that Gilmour played a note wrong and did not want it inti the DVD. Still in my view. The longer solo make sense…

That guitar part you liked during the second solo; many people refer to that as the ‘waving part’, maybe because Gilmour waves the guitar around whilst he’s doing it, maybe because, as you said, the sound he creates almost comes at you in waves. In guitar lexicon though, those are ‘divebombs’. Basically you use the whammy bar to quickly lower the pitch of the note your playing (and in this case, bring the note back up again). So called because it’s supposed to be reminiscent of a bomb dropping. It’s a common technique, pioneered by Hendrix. Gilmour uses it in an especially emotive way. The pitch he’s playing it at makes it more reminiscent of a person’s scream, which I think is the point, given the context and themes of Comfortably Numb. Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’ has some fantastic divebombs in it, for a really good example of when they’re used.

Nice reaction. I saw them at the Silverdome in Detroit on this tour. After an intermission, they played Dark Side straight through. After they finished, David Gilmour announced that was the first time they had played it straight through since 1975. I heard they played it several more times at other venues after that.

Roger Waters was the original co vocalist with Dave on this song. He was also the main lyricist of Pink Floyd material through the seventies and all their most classic albums. He left the band in the mid-80s mostly over creative differences with Gilmour. Thus you have keyboardist Richard Wright and other backup musicians singing his verses here. This is one of the reasons its so important to listen to the studio versions of Floyd first to hear the original production as it appeared on the albums with the original personnel. Then you can compare the live version later. With Floyd usually it's pretty close or better. PS Roger is on tour in Europe as we speak. He toured all over the United States last summer doing a bunch of Pink Floyd material. He does a hauntingly beautiful and even darker version of Comfortably Numb in his show. You can catch his live 2022 version here on RU-vid.

@@retroreactions.... Roger sings the entire thing in his show. In fact, he just released a video for it a month or so ago. Look up Rodger Waters Comfortably Numb 2022. Also if it's any consolation, David Gilmour has never officially ruled out going back out on tour as a solo act or Pink Floyd with Nick Mason. He last toured in 2016. He would still be younger than Rolling Stones who are also still touring. I wouldn't hold my breath though. Dave and Nick released a song last year as Pink Floyd in support of Ukraine. Look up "Hey Hey, Rise Up" Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd de 1968 a 1983 ont enregistrés que des chefs d'oeuvre (hormis les 2 musiques de films : obscuced by clouds et more) ! Leur musique est intemporelle, comme celle de mozart ou beethoven. One last comment from me - You mentioned the ring lights they installed in the auditorium that graphically mirrored the circular screen behind the stage (called Mister Screen, because as cool and detached as they were, they could also be giant dorks). When you see the stage brightly lit, you'll notice the entire thing is a giant eye looking upward, and I always interpreted those ring lights as more eyes looking down at the audience. They also hung several banners overhead with variations on the Division Bell album cover, and when you put all those elements together, you notice how unified the graphic design of the whole thing was. Very cool.

@flubblert
@flubblert Год назад
@@retroreactions.... mr. Screen is one of the iconic symbols of live Pink Floyd. Has been with them almost from the beginning. Always behind them. In darker quiet instrumental parts, and other times, video or animation is displayed on the screen behind them. Did I mention they had their own animator? Gerald Scarfe. Responsible for some of the most haunting, surreal snd at times terrifying images displayed behind them during some songs from ’Wish You Were Here’ and ’The Wall'. Check out "High Hopes" by them from Pulse to see the screen in classic proper use. Not animated Gerald Scarfe stuff on this one, but every bit as surreal snd captivating. Oh, and the song is pretty dope too!! 😏

Nice. I want to see their imagery next. I saw Another Brick video and there was some pretty disturbing stuff. BTW, did they make more traditional music videos ever? Never heard anyone discuss that yet...
@yanceynitzsche5115
@yanceynitzsche5115 Год назад
@@retroreactions.... Weeellllll...as you've already discovered, "traditional" is a relative term. One of the most alluring things about them to me is how much care they put into thought-provoking imagery that becomes forever tied to the music in your mind (I mean, those album covers!), and that included video from nearly the beginning. Roger was usually the one from whom the more disturbing material originated, but once David assumed command in the 80's, they made a few "Mtv approved" music videos for songs like Learning to Fly and High Hopes. Like the commenter said, many of the concert tours featured mini-movies played up on Mr. Screen that fully qualify as "music vids", just intended for concert goers rather than cable television. All of those clips are available in their box sets and many on YT. OH! And the Another Brick video you watched is just an out-of-context clip from the movie adaptation of The Wall album, which could be said to be a 90-minute music video with a narrative through-line.
@flubblert
@flubblert Год назад
@@retroreactions.... Yeah, 'Another Brick in the Wall pt2' 1979, was to the best of my knowledge their first official video for the public. Once again ahead of their time as MTV didn't even exist yet. That giant puppet - marionette of the teacher in the video is a Gerald Scarf original that appeared on stage with them during the live concerts of The Wall back in '79,80. It currently resides in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Most other videos that came before that you see on RU-vid accompanying some of their songs were videos/imagery created strictly for their concerts to enhance the music. One of the most watched versions of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5" here on RU-vid features Scarfe animation produced for Mr.Screen not the public. I try to encourage reactors to avoid the video version of 'Shine On' when reacting to it specifically for the reason that they could (and do), become so distracted by the haunting animation that they completely lose track of the amazing music. But it's definitely worth watching AFTER you've listened to the song on its own first. Check out "Goodbye Blue Skies" from The Wall here on RU-vid. It features beautiful acoustic instrumentals and Gilmour vocals, accompanied by some very dark terrifying animated war imagery.

There have been some tours more profitable, but NONE as powerful and emotional. When you mentioned the lighting, I thought the following info would bring some clarity to the immense undertaking this tour was. Three stages leapfrogged around North America and Europe, each 180 feet (55 m) long and featuring a 130-foot (40 m) arch resembling the Hollywood Bowl venue. All in all, the tour required 700 tons of steel carried by 53 articulated trucks, a crew of 161 people and an initial investment of US$4 million plus US$25 million of running costs just to stage. This tour played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; each concert gathered an average audience of 45,000.

Another Incredible performance from this Pulse Concert, part of Pink Floyds 1994 The Division Bell World Tour. Pink Floyd are renowned for their elaborate, massive tours, and the Pulse Concert is no different. This is listed as "the final concert tour" of Pink Floyd, but the three members of Pink Floyd here at this Pulse concert, did play together as Pink Floyd in the 2000s, but they did not tour. The three members of Pink Floyd onstage here are, (you known them), David Gilmour, (guitar, lead vocals), Rick Wright, (keyboards, vocals), and Nick Mason, (drums, percussion). The rest of the musicians and singers are PFs' touring band that year or that tour. Although Guy Pratt has been playing bass for PF since Roger Waters quit the band in 1985/86, but he's not technically a member of Floyd.

I'm 51. & after all these years my fave & GOAT album is still Pink Floyd "The Wall", from which this song came. It was a constant companion & expressed every feeling I had as a teen. They never toured a lot & broke up after "The Final Cut", but got back together in '86 without Roger Waters (Waters, an original member, wrote most of The Wall & was my fave member) with "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" album/tour. I personally didn't like the album & didn't care to see the concert. Later I watched the vhs they put out & was glad I didn't waste my time & money. But by the time they came out with "The Division Bell", from which this "Pulse" show came, it had been so long, & I actually thought the album was better, so I wound up with tix to see this tour in an outdoor stadium. I wasn't expecting much, & figured couldn't be much better than the previous tour, but thankfully I was wrong & they blew me away! I'm still processing how lucky I was, guess you could say? It sounded better than the records! They played a set of old mixed with new songs, took a break, then came out & did "Dark Side Of The Moon" album, filled by encores, including this, "CN". I'd seen many guitar greats, including Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, & Eddie Van Halen to name a few, but knew I was witnessing the best in David Gilmore! It was the best sounding concert I've ever heard. ...Fyi, it was RETRO in the name that landed me here, friend! One of the things they achieved by having three different voices singing Roger's parts is that there is no way of making a direct comparison and saying, "This person doesn't sing it as well as Roger does." But they've set it up so there is no comparison -- three voices are perforce going to sound different from one. So you're not making a direct one-to-one comparison between two people.

I recall you said on an earlier video that you weren't a big fan of long Guitar solos, you're a keyboard player so ok, I get it. But tell me that Dave Gilmour's solos throughout this Pulse concert & all the other Pink Floyd clips you've seen & heard hasn't changed your mind? Gilmour does way more than a guitar solo, he plays the song, with all the emotion of the lyrics. It's like the guitar is not just a feature but integral to the songs. Someone said a while ago that lots of kids want a guitar for Christmas, but Fender Stratocasters want David Gilmour....God's Guitarist!!
