Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in high school here in North Carolina when this song first came out in 1979. I remember it well. My girlfriend at the time and I loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (28-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.

Great reaction! I truly respected you being honest with me when I first requested it as far as you having seen it before but after you said it had been over 20 years I had a feeling we would get a great reaction and WE DID! It was so cool seeing how much you appreciated the production but also seeing your expression listening to the solo. Definitely what I was hoping for when I requested it! Thank you!!

Three stages leapfrogged around North America and Europe, each 180 feet (55 m) long and featuring a 130-foot (40 m) arch resembling the Hollywood Bowl venue. All in all, the tour required 700 tons of steel carried by 53 articulated trucks, a crew of 161 people, four trailers equipped with huge industrial generators to provide enough electricity for the show, and an initial investment of US $ 4 million plus US $ 25 million of running costs just to stage. This tour played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; each concert gathered an average 45,000 audience.

Thanks David. This one I could not resist watching. You'd think the solo would be planned because it's so perfect, but he does seem to change it every show a little bit. What a treat for this audience.

My favorite band of all time.. I am an old fella and saw them in 1978, I was 16. It was the World Series of Rock Cleveland Ohio, Animals Tour, 80,000 people. Their production then was insane. But most off all it was the sound that blew my mind. It was in a double decker stadium with multiple towers of speakers everywhere. Music has always marked times in my life. 16 and I thought I was unbreakable and would live forever, listening to a show I thought would never end. One reason I love your reviews is your love of the music comes through. Thank you for this review..!

Yep, same here. For many years after seeing this concert 4 times, other shows were... mmmeh, yeah, nice, but.... The DSOT tour did pretty much the same. I remember going to Eric Clapton after seeing DSOT. He had a glitterball, too. The size of a beach ball. And a cute little round screen with wrinkles in it. I couldn't help but snigger a bit. The music was great, though.

You really need to watch this video several times to gain a full appreciation of the artistry involved. The first time you're dazzled by the light show. The second time you realise how Gilmour's playing is reaching new heights and twists. The third time you find yourself admiring how the rest of the band are supporting the song, keeping the energy going all the way through. I've come to regard anything 9.1 and above from your good self as being practically a 10 anyway!

Have not watched reaction yet, about to now.....want to say that even though you have heard this song before, when you watch this live version from Pulse, I can say 100% that it will be as if you are experiencing this song for the first time. Very psyched to see this reaction and thank you for doing it, much appreciated.(Also does not matter if you saw it 20 years ago it will be awesome)

On the production... this show also featured lighting over the audience in indoor venues, a bed flying over the audience crashing into the stage (or was that DSOT?) , a pre-show airplane flyover in open roof venues (if allowed by local regulations), two giant inflatable pigs' heads on top of the two main speaker towers and 300 speakers providing quadraphonic sound.

Agree with all you said, but I do think this was one of Gilmores best set up off the pedal board for Guitar TONE and Effects TONE. The Guitar was Biting and it projected forward with an aggression in some parts I did not hear as pronounced in Delicate, but its been a while reviewed. I was at both shows. (One nite in the rain outdoors Oakland - talk about an experience). Both awesome and Delicate I loved for more focus on Division Bell and Momentary Lapse which makes sense given timeline 87, but Pulse is the one concert Id Suggest for newbies and reactions imo. The Lighting was shockingly awesome as was the fidelity. Stand Outs - CN, Sorrow, RUN, Brick Wall for production. Only gap I had with Pulse was lack of a few more Momentary Lapse LP tunes (Machine 1, Terminal Frost, One Slip) especially seeing how many reactions liked Sorrow. I'd swap these with 2-3 off pulse.

The genius behind light show was Mr. Marc Brickman. He was later asked by Mr. Steven Spielberg to be light consultant and stage the light show for a scene (Flesh Fair) in A.I. I made a delivery to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech back I believe it was 1994 when this tour took place ( not this exact concert filmed here ) and I was delivering to an area backstage looking at the stage in person it was a massive I think it took them two or three days if I remember them talking right ? And on video really don’t do it justice I have friends that went to this concert and they were telling me about it and when they seen this, however this was 30 years ago that lighting rig to be that good then 30 years ago was phenomenal and it is still impressive today.😎

Marc Brickman did the lighting. There were three separate stage setups while this toured the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe in 1994. While one was being taken down and moved, one was being assembled at the next venue and the third for that night's performance. Looking at the schedule it looks like there was at least 1 off day between performances unless there were repeat performances at the same venue. The only place I can think to have improved the performance would be to include a live orchestra.

Guy Pratt Bass on this was spiritual the lows he got and TONE. Guy Pratt Icehouse. He already left the band by the time Icehouse 40 years live concert came to be, but if you like Pulse, check out Icehouse RU-vid 40 years Live - full concert. Special tunes (Icehouse, No promises, Kingdom, Man of Colors, Great Southern Land). Offers the same fidelity of Pulse. A very special production.

I tell you it was a 10 XDDDDD You have to see the complete concert, the production is incredible in all the songs. And yes, there was a plane crashing and giant pigs. I saw a concert of that tour, and sometimes after I saw a Batman movie, that one with Jim Carrey, sorry, I don't remember the title. In that movie there was an scene of a party, and I thought "I've seen these lightning before". And in the final scenes, with Batman fighting with E-Nigma... there was 100% Pink Floyd lightning, probably the people who made the film lightning was the same who made the Pink Floyd show.

Comparing this tune vs Pearl Jam’s covers, I can just enjoy the quantity of sonic layers. It’s NUTS! Keyboards, maybe synths, voices and chorists, even the little triangle (it was a triangle), it’s mad, man. Keeping all said in mind, I think that Pearl Jam’s work is a very Fairy homnage to the original one. Even Gilmour’s solo is well free-performed by Mike And I agree, Top Notch in its maximum

Fun fact: When Floyd was touring (and I saw the Division Bell tour) they had (2) exact stage set-ups including the iconic screen in the background which tilts forward during this song. When Floyd was playing, the second stage set-up was already on the move to be set up at the next venue. Each of their 2 stage sets cost 5 million dollars. By the way, this was the best concert that I had ever seen in my lifetime.

I've never been a fan of the verse part of this performance (Roger's part), which has like four people singing in harmony. It loses something there for me, the "doctor" part. And the solo, long regarded as Gilmour's best performance, also over the years sounds a little too clean for me. And how much I loved the visuals seeing this live, the disco ball, the lotus flower thing opening up, it hasn't aged as well for me as I would have thought. His performance of this solo in Pompeii in 2016 on the other hand, I hope you give that one a watch/listen. It hits different. The tone, the added wisdom and more gravelly voice and all of it, that has become the definitive version for me.

My Favorite all-time Pink Floyd song and the Pulse version is great but David, to be honest, I need to see Gilmour playing. You need to watch the best Live video for this song from when they played Gdansk. Theeee best 4 minute solo version ever. There's even a video out there of just the ending solo. Not only was the solo actually better but more focus on Gilmour throughout. Am I biased toward Gilmour. Yes. No apologies. My favorite guitarist ever. He plays from the soul.

I remember paying 50 bucks to watch this show live on pay per view. We smoked up my parents garage and came in and watched it and had it going through a great sound system too but the tv was a 27 inch lol. My favorite guitar solo of all time by my favorite guitarist of all time and that won't ever change. I probably never would've played an instrument if it wasn't for David Gilmour. The next and last song is run like hell and they had every thing on the stage for that one. Absolutely crazy. The only better live version for me was the live 8 version where they played it with Roger. Can't lie, I actually shed some tears. He used the black strat and everything. Still in disbelief he sold it but it sold for 4 MILLION DOLLARS! Crazy. Oh yeah, am i still in the que dude? Lol feel like it's been a year

Pink floyd have always hade some of the best production value out there. I just went to see roger waters in albany a few days ago and it's not as grand as this, but it's also not as large a venue as this But the amount of money put into the whole set is unbelievable. Lights everywhere, incredible set pieces for certain songs, especially In The Flesh. Lazer lights that cover the entire stage, and to top it all off, a giant 20 foot tall, remote controlled, inflatable floating pig that a guy from his crew flies around for the second half.

David Gilmour can play a single note and have it sound sublime and grandiose; this is his greatest skill!! As far as vocals... he does exactly what the song needs; nothing more nor less!! Overall? It's never been about how phenomenal he is... it's been ALL about how tastefully he uses his voice, guitar effects, string bending techniques, finesse and style!! Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No. He however takes you on a journey with him, the song and his guitar!! Pink Floyd & Gilmour are The G.O.A.T.

A pity you don’t want to give us the same insight into their music as you do on other songs (which is why I love to watch your videos) just because you know the songs. I don’t get this first reaction thing. A man with your knowledge could probably share even more insights on a song you are familiar with?

Gilmore is a GOD, it's illegal to not bow down before him. The concerts were part of the show and they were done well always, have you seen The Wall? I don't think you're a fan

Decent cover version, but I prefer the original Pearl Jam 😜

I absolutely did not like this version. Now I grew up on Floyd. But they fell completely apart. They were not even talking to one another by the time the last album came out. Now we do have David's guitar in this, but just about nothing else lives up to the original. It's too darn slow. It's NOT exciting. This is like a "tribute" band, with none of the "bite" it should have. I would NEVER have liked this as a young pup if this were the version. Have a good day David Heretic.

Ah, a purist. I think this version is magnificent. Actually never noticed it's slower but you're definitely right, it is. But they didn't just not talk anymore, they moved on without Waters, who's always been the stubborn one in the band. As much as I love what he brought to PF I think this is pretty acccurate, even though there's always two sides to the story on how exactly they fell apart. The studio version is nice but feels a bit too short with the fade out. This is just one of the many reasons I appreciate this version a lot, it shines a light on one of the best guitar solos in history on one of the best Floyd songs period.

@@lenni-hazels I've got no problem with people liking this version. That would be silly! :) I just think it's trying to be too "beautiful", and looses some of the "edge" of the situation that it is portraying. As for Waters, I absolutely HATE a lot of his "expressed thoughts" on the world (trying to keep it simple), but they NEEDED him. When they broke up, I was a "Gilmore" guy, and my very best friend was a "Waters" guy. We were roommates at the time, and every morning he would put on that "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" album before breakfast. When PFs first album came out without Waters I would turn it on, and he hated it. So, there we were, fighting it out through music we would play. We never had cross words or anything, we did our fighting using the turntable! So, even with me being a "Gilmore" guy, I just can't like this version as much. Best wishes to ya!

I just want to chime in here and say that Roger quit the band expecting them to fold not carry on without him. I love his raw vocals and his lyrics (mostly his Floyd stuff not so much his solo stuff) but he is just a huge pain in the ass to be perfectly honest. He is fighting with David Gilmour again just about a week ago about him not being able to post his stuff on the Pink Floyd website. Uhh, with all due respect, you're not in the band sir. Haven't been since 85. Pink Floyd is no more anyway because Rick died. He's just a pain in the ass.

@@JAYZIGGY5 Wow. I did not know about the recent stuff. Yes, he left. He's out. My roommate used to say that it's not even PF anymore without Rodger. I would hold up the new album and read it to him "Pink Floyd, that's what it says right here on the title." Now that brings back memories! I agree with your observation that he's a pain. Good luck!

@@georgekenny2294 Yup! Pink Floyd! It says it right there lol. I agree it was never the same without him but he chose to leave, and they chose to keep playing. Sorry Roger. He should've asked to come back. But yes he released a video where he looks like a nutcase crazy guy saying "David Gilmour banned me from the official Pink Floyd website". 🤔
