No one knows how they came up with all this great music. It is suspected that guitars were involved somehow....

Despite the general downbeat and dark messages that are put forward in a lot of Pink Floyd's music, the music is well known for its uplifting effect that the listener experiences. A lot of that can be put down to the very strong melodies and clever compositions that the Floyd have created throughout their tremendous body of work. Their music has affected many people throughout the world over the last 50 plus years. I mean how many bands do you know that can move audiences and in many cases (including myself I hasten to add) bring them to tears by the sheer musical and lyrical impact of what we are hearing? Again, I enjoyed your review here! Just as an aside to this, I've just been telling my friends down at our local Wetherspoons hostelry about your wonderful recent review of the live version of 'Comfortably Numb' that you did the other day. We laughed when I told them about how speechless you were after the great Gilmour solo! It was a brilliant reaction on your part - something that you should be proud of and especially entertaining for us!

You're a bright young man, you will do well with life and it will never be without beauty because now you love Floyd RiGHT? I had a hard time getting through that middle part at your age, the slow methodical keyboards, but I see the context now, or not long after listening to it many times, and it fits. It's just such a foreign concept due to the way Radio teaches us to listen to music, so for me growing up on radio tracks, 4 mins at most with few exceptions, this part always threw me early on. The rest of it was so good I still loved the song, but as I said I see the context of that break and how it sets the mood for the second half.

vermilion J • Absolutely not. Writing off an entire genre is so shortsighted. (And an aspersion cast at Pink Floyd in their day as well.)

"They're not from this planet". I totally agree and am glad that they came to visit us on Earth. The instrument that you are thinking of is a theremin. But, the similar sounds on this song were created by Richard Wright on a Mini-Moog and ARP String Synthesizer. The sound of dogs barking was processed through a vocoder and played as an instrument.

"Animal Farm" is a short novel by George Orwell. You should give it a read. It's not a blueprint for Pink Floyd's album, just an inspiration.

Just a tip.... Listen to the actual lyrics until you know them. Then YOU decide what they mean to you. You don't need Genius for that. And Floyd lyrics are mostly pretty straight forward, albeit laced with a healthy dose of sarcasm.

The instrument you were trying to think of with the bars is a theremin. It uses radio waves to make the sound I think. There is an interesting film about how it was created & supposedly drives the players crazy. Think Floyd was just using a synth though.

I will leave it to others to discuss themes and meanings behind this masterpiece. It's solidly in my Top 10 Pink Floyd songs, and Animals floats near the top of my favorite albums list. I chuckled as you were rendered nearly speechless by the majesty. :-D What I want to talk about (at length, sorry in advance) is something you zeroed in on; the idea that their music is uplifting and deeper in meaning/intent than a cursory glance at the lyrics might suggest. It reminded me of the completely asinine backlash against Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, where "concerned parent/teacher groups" lambasted it as "anti-education", without realizing the meaning was EXACTLY OPPOSITE of that. And of course you still get the critics who declare that PF music is all about glorifying drug use, is only liked by stoners and burned out hippies, and is depressing. I have a theory that such misconceptions were began by disgruntled music execs and journalists who wanted to punish the band for refusing to play their games, and the reputation must've stuck, because I am regularly rebutting those false claims. The "celebration of drug culture" probably has roots in the rise-and-fall of Syd Barrett, but they lamented that tragedy repeatedly for decades afterward, and were never heavy users of any particular substance, at least as a way to fuel their creative output. The song Comfortably Numb is only about drugs in the most surface-y way; being Roger's true story of being pumped full of tranqs before a show to help overcome abdominal pain. Nary a positive drug reference elsewhere in their entire discography. Most of PF's music was about weighty subject matter, sure, but if one digs in they'll find it was almost always an expression of empathy and compassion for the human condition, and a real concern for how the powerful prey on the meek, weak and under-served among us. That isn't depressing, it's a motivational call for change to me. THANK YOU for realizing this and calling it what I agree it is; "inspirational". And you are what? Somewhere between 18-21? I've no idea if you partake in stone, but you're the furthest thing from a "burned out hippie" I can imagine...so there's that. Continue spreading the Pink Floyd love and the myth-busting word! :-)
@420since1974

Yancey Nitzche: Well said! Aside from Syd Barrett, the other members of the band only experimented a few times with LSD. Alcohol and cannabis were their drugs of choice, though Richard Wright had a bit of a cocaine problem in the late 70s/early 80s. I find that many Pink Floyd songs leave me feeling uplifted, with the urge to become a better person, and help out those less fortunate. It's not always the in lyrics, often the music does it all by itself.
@yanceynitzsche5115
@yanceynitzsche5115 5 лет назад
@@420since1974 Indeed on all points, esp. the "well said" part. HA! I make joke. Rick's coke addiction was so unfortunate. Although none of the members ever directly framed it as such to my knowledge, it must have been the main contributing factor to him being booted from the band, due to the malaise [ding!] it caused him, leading to decreased creative output and general lack of interest in band proceedings, leading to the actions that frustrated Roger enough to sack him. They certainly all spoke very unfavorably about that period at various times, fortifying the point. Pink Floyd didn't fit into the industry ideal of the "pop/rock band", where singing about sex, drugs n' rock and roll was assumed by the bean counters to be all that was necessary to be profitable. They were hard to market, harder to corral, and damn near impossible to categorize. Nuance was lost on many of the mainstream journalists who covered their career, leading many consumers to believe the spiteful drivel they published...hence, the reputation. Meanwhile, PF were over there churning out album after album of some of the most beguiling, lovely, intelligent, and/or thought-provoking music the rock genre had/has ever witnessed. Oh well....WE know the truth! :-)
@420since1974
@420since1974 5 лет назад
@@yanceynitzsche5115 I feel that despite the barriers that they faced with the industry controlled media, Pink Floyd became a genre unto themselves. I'm always pleased to see anyone experience the band for the first time. It's so satisfying to those of us who "know the truth".

Dogs is in my top five P F songs. I've been listening to this for over 40 years. The older you get the more you can relate to it. You will love Pigs and Sheep. They're all very different, but all P F songs are, no two sound anything alike.

I see where you are going with that statement and it falls apart after Animals and you get into the wall and the final cut, then there is much that sounds the same, and even downright close to identical, but there is a reason for that so I think you're right in terms of how they approached every album

Dogs is about the business men who behave like dogs. All the song is the analogy. The "bad blood" turns to "stone". In the end, all the "who"s were directed to business men and dogs, and at the very end, they were the ones who got dragged by the stone.

Love this song and album, Gilmour's greatest overall guitar work. I freaked the s*** out of a guy with this song back in the...ahem...'90s. He only thought he knew all about PF, but had never heard of Animals. I handed him the cassette, he put it in his WalkMan and went into another room to listen. Then came back at the end of each verse with a "What The H** Was THAT?!" look on his face. Oh for having a RU-vid channel back then. LOL

If you want to do a "deep dive" as they say, this song "Dogs" was originally called "You've Got To Be Crazy" back in 1974. There's a Wembley Arena recording of it from November, 16th, 1974, and it's much more wordy and rough. Then there's a recording of it at Nassau Coliseum in New York from seven months later and it's been cleaned up a bit. Also, there's a song called "Raving and Drooling" from these same shows, which would develop into "Sheep" from Animals. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2iIsTWvp_Zo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hb0f_UPcpUk.html
