It’s from a concept album, The Wall. The protagonist’s father died in WWII, so his mother is very overprotective. The Wall itself is metaphorical, a barrier around him to keep the world out and his feelings in.
It's definitely about a dysfunctional relationship between an overprotective mother and her traumatized son, and the relationship helps build a wall between the son, the character Pink, and the world around him. It's one more piece that leads him to withdraw from all relationships, as well as break the ones he has. It is a very sad song with very little uplifting points in it except maybe the music itself. I love seeing your reactions to these songs many of us love and appreciate your thoughtfulness about them!
The Wall is a Pink Floyd movie. It is about a guy losing his mind. The wall, is him shutting himself off from the world. He is building a wall around himself to protect himself from all the bad in the world. The Wall movie is dark, but you might enjoy it. Roger Water's never met his father, he died in WWII. His mother was over protective of her little boy. In the live version, you can see the lighting difference between the boy/teenager singing, and the mother. On the album Roger is singing the boy/teenager parts, and David is singing the mother.
Like others are saying you need to listen to the entire album for context and real understanding. The album is like a storybook. Each song is like a chapter telling a small part of the story. It is an amazing album, you will enjoy. Good reaction! Keep on rocking!😊🎉❤
Glad you love Pink Floyd, that makes me so happy!! To this day, they are my all-time favorite band since Dark Side Of The Moon was released in 1973, I was 20 years old then. I even made my 2 daughters fans! Yes, the mother/son relationship is very dysfunctional
@@gregnowak6450 I agree, in a perfect world. Sometimes you don't find out until many years later that your mother directly contacted the person you loved and ran them off. That person just breaks it off and feels so intimidated that their path of least resistance is just to go silent.
This is an album that you have to listen to in its entirety, from beginning to end. It tells an entire story, which makes picking songs from the "middle" difficult to interpret if you've never listened to it before.
There is a live version of The Wall performed in its entirety in front of an area of the former Berlin Wall. During the concert, a wall is built. At the end of the concert, the wall in torn down in front of where the Berlin Wall was.
You have to search for Roger Waters The Wall in Berlin 1990 with Sinéad O'Connor singing Mother. Like a shy fragile human, she was, it was so authentic as it only could be.
This song REALLY, REALLY needs to be heard within the context of the whole album. I would seriously suggest you listen to the whole album. This album is a tribute, in a sense, to their original singer Cyd Barret, who sadly went insane and eventually died alone in his anguish. The song represents the fears and paranoia that a highly overbearing mother can cause a child, especially if that child is sensitive in nature. The whole story is so sad. The actor that plays Pink in the movie did an amazing job in capturing the erotic narcissistic mentality that developed in the character over his course of life. Crazy good. Maybe watch the movie then listen to the album. Have a lovely day. FYI: This moment in the child’s life was post WW2 in England
From my understanding the album is loosely based on the life and experiences of Roger Waters. It's an allegorical look at Pink Floyd’s childhood. I’m not gonna go too deep into it but I’ll try to break down the song. For starters, The first song in the album: “In The Flesh?” the death of his father. The song has vocals that turns into yelling. And then there’s helicopter noises and then it sounds like something dropping (presumably a bomb) then the song cuts to a baby crying. We know that his father died either before he was born or when he was far too young to remember him. His mother was obviously very distraught and devastated. And whether she realized it or not, she became very over bearing and toxic. She clung to him basically because he was all she had left. That’s what Mother is about. Her not wanting him to leave her and her not wanting him to be his own person (cause then he’ll leave her). “Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true. Mamas gonna put all her fears into you.” Making him dependent on her. “Mamas gonna keep you right here under her wing. She won’t let you fly, but she might let you sing.” “Mama will always find out where you’ve been.” Not letting him/not wanting him to leave. “Mother should I build the wall?” “Of course mamas gonna help build the wall.” “Mother did it need to be so high?” The Wall represents 2 things. 1. The wall that separates him from other people, ostracizing him. 2. And the emotional wall, blocking out your feelings. That’s part of his alienation.
You absolutely talked over the last line of the song! Most important line in the whole thing and continues the story of the whole album The Wall. I really enjoyed watching you feel the music, but for complete understanding listen to The Wall from song 1 through to the end. Many comments nail the theme(s) so I won't repeat them.
You're right, Inna----this is another great song from Pink Floyd. It's wonderful to see a new generation of listeners discover the unique, compelling sound of this band. I highly recommend you watch David Gilmour and Richard Wright's (half of Pink Floyd) masterful performance of Echoes, live at Gdansk, accompanied by highly skilled musician friends of theirs. It's an incredible 25 minute cosmic journey, and perfectly captures the unique Pink Floyd sound.
I think you’re a brave lady taking this one on especially if you haven’t had the time/ opportunity to hear the preceding tracks from the Wall or indeed the whole album which would give you the complete overview …
It's about a toxic over protective mother who essentially helps build a wall around the boy. The final lyric "mother did it need to be so high" says it all referring to the wall she built around him.
Gilmour's voice is so smooth and soothing she missed "Mothers gonna make all of your nightmares come true, Mothers gonna put all of her fears into you" It isn't a love song to Pink's mother. More a lament, hence the guitar wail at the beginning of the solo.
@@joeblow8206 Roger Waters sings the verse."Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?" David Gilmour sings mothers response. He's said in interviews it isn't specifically about his mother
You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story. In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Showroom and they didn't play this. We were so bummed. 😭 Happy belated 4/20😁😎
No, not cute. I’ve been married to my husband for 40 years. And “Mama” his Mom still thinks she’s the queen and I’m the Princess. It’s called Mother-Son enmeshment. Not in a sexual way. In a controlling way. She is 90 and has several serious health issues. But, I think she’s going to live forever. She’s made my life an almost nightmare. She. Just. Can’t. Accept. Her. Son. Has. A. Life. Apart. From. Her. We have 2 adult children and 4 grandchildren. But still… Twisted shit.
No, I don't think there are many ways to interpret this song if you caught the lyrics, "Mama's gonna make all of your Nightmares come true, Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you," that's fairly clear what the relationship is about.
“Mother do you think they’ll drop the bomb?” “Mother do you think they’ll try to break my balls?” Confuses people every time. And it is never not funny. 😂
As with other reactions to songs from The Wall, I highly recommend that you listen to the entire album to get the context of the song within the story that the album is trying to tell.
it was from the perspective of Cold War Fear. God I remember waking up so often, knowing the Clock was a just a few moments from midnight during these years.
You said there's no video on this song. Well actually there is a Movie The Wall by Pink Floyd and the Movie goes along with the whole album and each song is a different video of the song. And you can get a Better View of inside his mind to what they were talking about and describing the songs from the Album from the Wall. This was a Masterpiece for it's time and it was eye opener for me. Check out the Movie and watch with Horror and Sadness and Anger and everything else. Great reaction from you.... First time seeing you and I'm going to check out some more of your reactions. 🎧💪😎
Unironically, for young people: if your parents are at least half-decent, let them judge your bf/gf. They'll know more than you. Your mum is better than you at spotting bad girls, and your dad is better than you at spotting bad boys.
The entire album The Wall by Pink Floyd is a kind of story about a fictional character called "Mr. Pink" created by the band based on some of their personal experiences. I recommend listening to the entire album, in order and if It is possible to watch the film of the álbum from 1982.
Speaking from my experience - overprotective mother towards a little boy might create serious issues in adult life. I hope young people nowadays will learn something useful from this song. Another great PF songs to consider and react: "Hey You" - about loneliness, "Yet another movie" - broken marriage and single parenting, "Great Gig in the sky" - the most beautiful song about death, "High Hopes" - about nostalgia, "Wearing the inside out" - about depression (my most favourite PF song ever) + the only one where Richard Wright is singing, "Brain damage/Eclipse" - JUST WOW OMG FREAKING AMAZING LEGENDARY GODLY HEAVENLY
Inna ...you need to listen to YES ...Close to the edge ,...all good people ,Awaken , they have a vast catalog of progressive Rock And check out Jethro Tull ...Thick as a brick ,Aqualung all prog rock ....Pink Floyd yes and tull we from the same period all all were considered the greats of this genre ... Love your reactions great job♥️👍👍👍👍👍💯
Inna, as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to other commenters (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece........
Hi Inna, to understand the meaning of the song you have to listen to it in the context of the entire album. Extrapolating a single song from "The Wall" is misleading. If you like "Floydian atmospheres", I recommend listening to "Silent Lucidity" by Queensrÿche (I don't know if you've already reacted to this song, but I'd be curious to know what you think). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jhat-xUQ6dw.html
As many already pointed out, The Wall is a concept album, partially autobiographical about a fictional rocker named Pink (Roger Waters), who went through a mental breakdown before a show, every single tile of the puzzle of his consciousness, his life, fell apart as he builds a metaphorical wall to protect what's remaining of himself from the others. There's a movie, filmed by Alan Parker, with Bob Geldof as Pink, that is slightly different from the album, but basically it depicts pretty well the story.
0:52 very much wrong on both takes on Mother. She's not a safe place in Pink's world. And she most definitely isn't funny.😂 I'll watch your reaction now and find out if you get it. (To be fair, it's harder to understand this song out of the context of the previous tracks on the album) Edit at 1:13... What!? A promising start 😂
I can agree that it's a beautiful song. However, I don't really understand that any song from The Wall album is recommended for listening as a standalone (except maybe Comfortably Numb). Several of the albums Pink Floyd recorded are so-called concept albums. This means that the individual tracks build on each other, not only musically but mainly thematically. And this is most evident on The Wall. This is really the story of one boy (Pink) from birth to adulthood. The song Mother is inserted into the story sometime in the first third and talks about the overprotectiveness of the mother towards the child, which brings a lot of trouble for the child's future and adulthood (which is why at the end of the song Pink wonders if it had to be so high - meaning the wall his mother eagerly builds around him in front of the world). In order to understand the whole story (based on the real childhood of the author - Roger Waters), it is necessary to listen to the album in its entirety and preferably in one sitting...
you should watch the movie by Pink Floyd "The Wall" 1982 I do not think you will totally understand until you watch the movie about the album Best of time to you
Cold War + Divorce + Narcissistic Song Writer = this track. There is a reason why Roger has this song in all his tours post-departure from Pink Floyd and the remaining Band doesn't play it much.
Yet another person who just doesn't get what this song is about. What is 'sweet" about a mother instilling fear and prejudice into her child? What is 'cute" about a controlling oppressive parent? ffs
don't let the melody fool you,. this song is about a mother smothering her insecure child to the point of insanity,.. when reacting to any single song from 'The Wall' you must keep in mind that each song in the album contributes to a larger story, watching the movie 'The Wall' is the best way to experience this album, without the entire context the meanings and subleties of each song will be diminished.
Enjoy ur journey into Floyd.. They are my all time favorite band without a doubt!! There is a huge amount of breathtaking material to enjoy. But most of their music was made to be listened to as an entire album. I would suggest taking the time to listen to an album as a whole instead of a song at a time.. might not server ur purpose here. But,, whatever. have fun!!
This is not a song about a loving nurturing mother. Its about an overbearing and over protective mother that wants to control and stifle the growth and the development of her son. It's actually a story of child abuse!!...
We grew up not knowing if each day was going to be the last for everyone on Earth. It created in some a hopeless attitude about their own future and endeavors. The Dr Spock parents is what he is sing about
The album The Wall is a concept album it's meant to be listen from the first song to the last song one behind the other. The song mother is the very sad song. It is about a overbearing controlling mother to the point it makes her son neurotic.
From a 67 year old we're do people get there crazy ideas from the song actual is about the government look it up there is video on Roger Waters telling you about it
This album is amazing and one of the few that are truly best appreciated listening start to end and getting the entire story behind this concept album. Comfortably Numb is one of the more popular songs off this album
