Worked my ass off picking up hay all summer when I was 15....Used the money I earned to buy my first stereo it had 4 speakers and a tape deck...This song was the first ever song I played on my first ever stereo in my bedroom in the dark......It blew me away and made all that hard work worth it.
I think many of us have memories like that. I first heard this album at a Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, Calif. It was a magical night and still a bit of the hippie era. Never gonna be bands/music like this ever again...
When I was about twenty, I never really understood what it meant "but then one day you find ten years have got behind you" until I turned thirty. Pink Floyd is not just great musicians, they are philosophers in music.
I'm 64 now I listened pink Floyd for the first time when I was 18. I realized the phrase that you say at 35 and I understand the part that says "sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older". Yes, the sun is still the same, and now I'm older, my parents have passed away, many of my friends too. It's sad but is reality. But you don't get it until sometimes it's too late.
ray djaarx amen to that. By the best soloist ever. There are plenty guitarists that have two or three great solos, but Gilmour has two or three dozen...
Your comment shows how childish you are. Michael's comment was spot on... yours is an over exaggeration of incredible proportions... which completely invalidates your worthless opinion. Paige had a few good solos, but once he recorded he could never play them again... his live performances are a joke, as he fried his brain on heroin.
From what I can gather- this was a top 10 selling album for 25 straight years. Only comparison I can think of is Elton John- 29 consecutive years with at least 1 No. 1 hit. Will never be done again.
I can't think of another album I have listen to more times than Dark Side of the Moon and whatever is second isn't even close. It's amazing how fresh this sounds each and every time.
I was 13 years old when I bought this album on cassette. It was 1980. The music blew my mind. I'm 53 now. A song I've known all of my life now makes me weep. I didn't really understand the lyrics as a kid, now it is the story of my life. It's become a difficult listen. I'm a literature teacher, 20 years in. I look at my pupils and think, you have no idea, young lad/lass, what you are facing. this song is genius at work.
So true, the lyrics and the music ,yes a masterpiece . Is it not funny that growing up in the 70's we were not listening to music that was in 1940's or earlier , that was only 30 years , Now we listen to music from present to 70 years ago, I'm rambling . I really wish I had my misspent youth back.
I was 14 years old when my music teacher played wish you were here on a record. Listening to Pink Floyd since them, now I am 57. Went to the Roger Waters in Madrid last march and it was magical.
Yup, and albums were a story from opening to closing song. I've explained that one to my daughter, there are some bands you just have to listen to start to finish. This is one of them.
@RickyStaffordtheoldhippie The Beatles are universal . Dylan , an acquired taste . Ask Gen Z's do they know who Bob Dylan is .. then ask the if they know The Beatles
@RickyStaffordtheoldhippie yep ✌️ I think you'd find they know The Beatles who are popular this day but give you a quizzical look if you said how's about Bob Dylan . No worries man .. I like lots of obscure bands too ✌️
Courtesy of the echo effect of the ol' ' Binson Echorec ' that Pink Floyd has become famous for incorporating into many of their songs. Glimour was not the only member who used the device as Rogers used it as an effect on his Bass and Wright on his keyboard and synthesizers. The Echorec's are fantastic echo devices but hard to maintain if you can get your hands on an original one. However, their are modern day replicas of the Binson Echorec by Dawner Prince of Croatia who make the ' Boonar' which in my opinion is the best duplication currently on market. My second choice would be the ' Echorec' effects pedal made by Catalinbread in Seattle, Washington, USA.
I saw Pink Floyd for first time when I was 17 years old I am 65 now I've seen them four times. One of the greatest band to ever have existed on this planet. ❤ Pink Floyd 2:29
when you are young and riding around partying at the age of seventeen those lyrics don't mean much. When you are older you realize your mortality and what you should have done. But then you learn to be happy with what you have.
josh brooks I heard this song at the age of 13 back in 2012 and have listened to it ever since.. The lyrics has truly set my philosophy on life .. I'm 18 now and thankfully have realized what they meant long ago.
Just love watching the old footage, no flashing lights, no smartphones, nothing except brilliant musicians and their music in front of a crowd who are there because they have to be.
No smartphones. That’s such a massive shift. I rarely go to concerts since smartphones took over the world, but, what are people there for? To get off on the music, or film it for social media? Sad times.
This is the first song I heard from the window of a neighboring house opposite in 1977 in the USSR. I was 7 years old then. Then, for the first time, music gave me goosebumps, I didn’t yet understand the meaning of the song, but the amazing music did its job. Still listening to your songs, I admire your work! This is grandiose! It’s a pity, of course, that I probably won’t be able to see and hear you live. Thanks guys for the music!
It's a music standing like a rock in an ocean of our life.
A "timeless" masterpiece of music. The lyrics are brilliant and so insightful, and David Gilmour's guitar solo is one of the best in rock history. A song for the ages, it will be played at my funeral (hopefully not for a long time. Speaking of, I'm trying to get Gilmour to play there, but he's not returning my calls).
On this record you heard sounds that were completely new. I remember I was four or five when my parents played the record, and it has influenced me to this day. The best album of the Floyd.
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say Home, home again I like to be here when I can And when I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees To hear the softly spoken magic spells
Been listening for 50 years now. Still living, loving the journey with PF in my ears , mind & heart. --- told my friends that if they don’t play PF at my funeral then I ain’t going ! Peace & Love Everyone
I was a young lad when I first listened to Floyd. Used to get high put on my head phones, listen for hours. Meddle, Dark Side, Atom Heart, beautiful music. The fellows in Pink Floyd never let me down! Many thanks from Welch, West Virginia!
Pink Floyd!
I remember being 15, we all used to sit around smoking joints and listening to this magical music in the dark. I’m now 60, don’t smoke anymore but the music is even more brilliant to me now, I appreciate the beauty of it even more than when I was young. Just a masterpiece,e the whole album.
the lyrics were written when they were all so young, and so was I, and as I got old, now I am almost 60 , i realize how poignant the lyrics REALLY are! I still can't believe a bunch of kids wrote and performed this BEAUTIFUL work of art ,
HaHa...the world is a stage ..pinkfloyd never wrote any music...it was all given to them...there is nothing new under the sun...the beatles, the who, the doors all from tavistock institute...social engineering...there has been at least x2 resets in recent past...we had free power just 100 yrs ago..all was destroyed and minds wiped...think about where are all the tombstones from 1300's onwards?
@@TheUrantia001 Take your Meds as prescribed by your mental health care professional. It's for your own good. Your mother will be upset if you start hearing the voices again.
Remember when you were a kid lying on the floor stoned off your head, wanting the beginning of this to never end yet, and yet at the same time wishing to hell they'd just get on with it and play the bloody song.
I am 56 years old... It was one of my first Vinyls , when I was 15 .. A great time and excellent music.. This year I will by me a new record Player.. Then I can hear my Vinyls again..Pink Floyd, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Supertramp, Simple Minds and all the good music of the 80'es...😊✋
This song will turn fifty in a few years. Seems like just yesterday I heard the song. Iconic band, iconic music. They just don't make music like this anymore.
Music is such an outward way of expressing yourself. Yet you here songs like this from PF and it makes your inward expressions amplified.. Like youve found a way to listen to your soul .
I know. You can tell amazing music when you listen to it for seven minutes and it isn't nearly long enough. I have the same feeling about "Echoes" and it's 23 minutes! "Don't stop, please don't stop playing!"
Seventeen years old , cutting hay all day for the neighbor, smoking pot in grape flavored papers , on a northern Wisconsin farm, listening to dark side of the moon on the 8 track and day dreaming of my sweetie:)) good old days of the seventies:)
