This album is played daily at my work. I work with people in their early 20's to late 50's and now all love Floyd! When a 20 y/o trainee asks who is playing and then starts downloading the entire Pink Floyd back catalogue you know you have done your good deed for the day!

Greatest song ever written. This entire album was a tribute to their former band mate Syd Barrett who fell into a drug induced psychosis shortly after signing their first major record deal. After leaving the band years earlier (replaced by David Gilmour), Syd showed up in the studio when the band returned to start recording this album after the success of Dark Side. No one recognized him at first because he had gained a lot of weight and had shaved all of his hair off. They never saw him again after that day. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is about Syd and the struggles he was having with fame and fortune and this song was written as a longing to have their friend back.
@psbarrow
@psbarrow Год назад
No, as Waters has said, the theme of the album was absence, not Syd: "There’s one song that’s about Syd (“Shine on You Crazy Diamond”), but the rest of it isn’t. It’s a much more universal expression of my feelings about absence. Because I felt that we weren’t really there. We were very absent."

Back in the day there was a show called Laser Floyd where you sat in a room, kind of lounging, and looked up at the ceiling while they had lasers moving to Pink Floyd songs. It was awesome! They should bring it back.
@ianfortier6796
@ianfortier6796 Год назад
There's so many things to share about this track but in keeping it to one thing, David's actually singing the notes he's playing during the guitar solos. The them of the album is "absence vs presence" which you'll understand more once you're familiar with the band's history and the story of Syd Barrett. It's compelling and heartbreaking all at the same time. Another great reaction, man! I recommend finishing out Dark Side next by doing Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage, and Eclipse in one go. They're all relatively short and would be about 10 minutes of music, give or take. They flow so seamlessly it's tough to break down into shorter sections. If you do need to break it down though, Any Colour can be separated but Brain Damage and Eclipse are essentially one song and played as such on the radio. Looking forward to the next one!

Awesome reaction!!!! Pink Floyd is deeper than the Mariana trench, higher than any satellites orbiting earth, cooler than an iceberg in a river of liquid nitrogen, hotter than a solar flare of lava spouted from the sun, smoother than a quantum stabilized atom mirror, more Zen than 10,000 Buddhist monasteries, larger than what we know as our universe. Their music is an enigma that is beyond what we are capable of comprehending.

I am 66. Every part of every song plays scenes, memories & images through my mind's eye when I hear them. That is what this band does in so many ways. I sat and stared at a Christmas tree & pulled in to a road side wreath & tree stand with snow on the ground to Us & Them. Presto change-O, it is a Christmas song now. The sax on Shine on you crazy diamond goes with a rainy day like you wouldn't believe. Dogs is a foggy misty field with some guy whistling for his dog. etc.

When I was 9 years old, my grandmother gave me an acoustic guitar. They sent me to that 65 year old lady in my school who then tried to teach me polkafolk for more than a year. I hated it and stopped going there. The guitar then was exiled to a corner of my room where it collected dust for 2 years. In 1975 - when i was 12 - an alit aunt gave me the album WISH YOU WERE HERE (at release-date!). it was my very first music-album (before that I had only cowboy-and-indians audiobook vinyls - yes, we were later on at that time). Just imagine that little boy in the Austrian Alps being deflowered and coined by Pink Floyd! When i heard the title song, I took my guitar and tried to copy the song. Eversince I play the guitar and kept having my own little amateur band(s), starting 1978. And David Gilmour is my God. Well, as subjective as this is, I still must say that - even objectively speaking - I most probably had the incredible luck of being "deflorated" by the arguably greatest rock guitarist of all time. I love watching your reactions, because I know every single note of every song, of every album, studio or live - thus someone can relive music-experiences. Here´s a tipp for a spectacle you havent´t watched yet (I guess) ... watch Gilmour go rogue off the usual path: "One Of These Days" (Live PULSE Restored & Re-Edited) 🙃

This whole album, "Wish You Were Here", is mostly about Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964. He's the "Crazy Diamond" they're referring to in the song, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond",... he the one they're Wishing Were Here. It's a sad story about a fall from grace, due to a massive abuse of LSD and other mind-altering drugs, along with mental health issues, that forced Syd Barrett to leave the band by 1968. That's the year when Dave Gilmour, a very good friend of Syds as well as the rest of Pink Floyd members, took over full time for Syd. Gilmour had been rehearsing and playing gigs with Syd and the other PF members for over a year, because there were many, many times Syd was simply unable to perform or rehearse at all. You can see photos of Pink Floyd from that era, with all 5 of them. Finally, by the end of 1968 Syd Barrett was gone and just the 4 of them, including Gilmour, remained as Pink Floyd until 1985. In 1985 Roger Waters quit the band and the 3 remaining members, (Gilmour, Wright and Mason), continued on as Pink Floyd until 2008 when Rick Wright died. Pink Floyd continued to pay Syd Barrett his full share of the proceeds, (which was hundreds of millions of dollars), until his death in 2006.

I remember at the end of your reaction to "Have a Cigar" you said something along the lines of and-now-it's-done when the abrupt fade-out/transition happened. Well, the radio sound at the end of that song tracked into this song. It's like someone tuned out the record-industry nonsense (the theme of "Have a Cigar") and turned to the important matter of human relationships. The song is, of course, pretty specific in the mind of the writer, Roger Waters, but the brilliance of his lyrics are that they don't lock the listener into his ideas alone. Also, that iconic sound you're hearing is part of "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond," which, I think, was first reaction. This song, "Wish You Were Here," transitions into the last parts of "Shine On." So now, except for "Welcome to the Machine" (also about the record industry), you're heard the album--almost (I'm sure someone will point out that you haven't). Peace to you, brother!

Loving your Floyd reactions! Welcome to the machine is a must, Mother from The Wall, Echoes (Dave Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall) is amazing, also A Great Day for Freedom much later but what a track! Also On the Turning Away, and In Any Tongue from Gilmours last solo album is stunning

Many people mistakenly think this is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to Wish You Were Here he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make them mean whatever they wanted them to mean, and they have become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them. David Gilmour has said that he often thinks of Syd when he's performing it, even though it wasn't written about him. The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone listening to a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and upon hearing the guitar joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

I've got a picture my dad took of me looking out over the Grand Canyon with this shirt on. "Wish You Were Here" is on the back of the shirt. Wearing that shirt that day wasn't consciously intentional, but it made for a pretty cool picture.

I was hoping to find this song, it's so hard to pick a favorite with Pink Floyd, but if I had to, this would be it.

This song is about Syd Barrett who was a founding member. He did so many drugs that he became insane.
