Complete bullshit statement. Some Floyd sucks donkey balls. It's not a matter of opinion when you have nearly universal consensus. Thats how we define reality
It may be, but it's not great. Could have been so much better by changing the track listing and using more of the fabulous organ playing that Rick did.
Hell, that's even worse than a cash grab. "Hey, remember those bits of rubbish that didn't made the cut for the Division Bell's pointless instrumentals? Let's honor Rick with that." Nick: "Well, we could just play the songs Rick wanted Floyd to play live again." Dave "Comfortably Numb" Gilmour glares, silencing yet another Floyd upstart. Years later, Nick "Hey, I can do it myself."
The fact that The Wall loops is so trippy, it could be saying that Pink falls back into his isolation and addiction or it represents other people building their own walls, it’s a really dark album and that’s why it’s amazing. To top it off, the transition from “Outside the Wall” to “In the Flesh” is genius because; 1. There’s a hidden piece of Roger talking and 2. At the start of “In the Flesh”, whatever the instrument is it becomes super quiet, tricking first time listeners to turn it up and then their eardrums are destroyed by the guitar. It’s amazing.
One of the instruments in the beginning of In The Flesh? is a clarinet, though there’s another that I believe is some sort of free-reed instrument like an accordion or melodica
@@wyattscheller8026 I interpreted it as another ‘pink’ being born. A cycle of war creating more fatherless, sheltered children falling into isolation and fascist ideas, leading to more division and potentially another war.
can agree, as a Pink Floyd fan the one song I ALWAYS HEAR on the radio is Another Brick Pt2, it's as if the stations forgot they have more then one song.
William Magee By the time animals was released, Pink Floyd achieved success and still remained very progressive, then with the wall they just took a piece from the story to release a single (a piece that is the easiest to take away from it all)
The difference being Momentary Lapse of Reason is a pile of shit, Final Cut is up there with Animals and Saucerful of Secrets as their best. That said, One Slip and if it weren't for the mellow instrumental break Learning To Fly are great 80's pop rock songs.
That picture of Syd Barret after he went insane makes me feel so uncomfortable. There’s just something about it that makes you feel empty and cold. It’s 1 in the morning and after seeing that I’m not sleeping for a bit
It's more so that the other songs are alright, but One Of These Days and Echoes blow them out of the water(s). A Pillow of Winds and San Tropez are still alright.
I was 15 when The Wall was released, living in a boys’ home with other rejects. We were huge fans of DSOTM, WYWH and Animals. None of those albums prepared is for The Wall. We were spellbound. Each and every one of us felt the record in a very personal way. We had each built our walls and we understood all of it on an emotional level. At the same time, it was so liberating. A battle cry. One of my favorite memories is of the night a friend and I got caught driving in a snow storm and had to go really slow. We turned the radio off and sang The Wall from start to finish, improvising the instrumental parts by making weird noises. We knew every guitar solo. The thing is in our DNA. And it has aged well! Thank you for this list.
The Endless River is a beautiful homage to everything Pink Floyd was. You can hear almost every sound the band used over the years on it. It's also a beautiful tribute to Richard Wright. Very underrated album.
Considering that members of The Orb worked on Endless River, and The Orb made trance remixes of most of Pink Floyd's albums, they're worth listening to.
I’m 41 and started listening to Floyd at around 14 years old. The Wall was my favorite album through my teens. That switched to Animals in my 20’s-mid 30’s. Then for about 4 years it was Meddle (because of the Live Pompeii concert). Now it’s obscured by clouds. It’s interesting to me how my musical tastes have changed throughout my life but one common theme is that Pink Floyd will forever be my favorite band.
Same. I just want to add that I started as a Waters-oriented Pink Floyd fan, and now I'm Gilmour-oriented. Actually I like Gilmour solo albums a lot too.
I'm 13, I recently started listening to this band. It's really good. My favorite song is probably... Time for DSOTM, Comfortably Numb for The Wall, and Echoes for whatever the hell that album was called.
the wall is my favourite album but high hopes is my favourite pink floyd song, high hopes tells the story of their careers and talk about diversity in society and a lot of controversial things, high hopes is a story in itself snd thats why i love it so much
@@dereklewis4321 I'll always defend Ummagumma. It had the potential to be a 10/10 masterpiece. Sysyphus has some amazing parts, Grantchester Meadows is gorgeous, Several Species is very interesting, Narrow Way part 2 is really good and Grand Vizier has interesting ideas. Not to mention the live album, which is mindblowing.
@steven Brunton You're right. I saw a documentary on it today. Its a continuation of The Division Bell really, but not released at the time. I love that it has Wright's keyboard playing in it though and some moments in it are fantastic bits of music
steven Brunton uh, if it was for money it would of been more expensive than what it was, would of been labelled as limited edition, would of been labeled the last pink Floyd album, probably would of been made a solo album too but with slight alterations. That’s money making, putting together pieces of old songs and putting it out there isn’t really money making, especially when you can listen to the entire thing on Spotify.
I first listened to Meddle when I was searching for One of These Days by Neil Young and accidentally played the first track. And now I love Pink Floyd. Thanks RU-vid.
I discovered it from a manga/anime called jojos bizarre adventure and i was listening to it and saw the pompeii version and im really into history so i was like this is interesting hearing that started a very deep love for there music
Oh man welcome to the machine is such a good song, personally I can't choose between that one, breath, shine on you crazy diamond, man there's way to many tbh but those 3 have to be in the top
I remember listening to Time for the first time while star watching with my girlfriend on top of a hill on her porch. Pink Floyd is just pure ear candy
@@perfectwhine742 Your right. Although I doubt you've listened to all those albums in full. But if it isn't your style it isn't your style. Simple as that.
Momentary Lapse of Reason is a solid album. I love most of the album: Learning to Fly, Dogs of War, On The Turning Away, Sorrow, One Slip are all incredible songs. I would have it in the top 5 or 6 Pink Floyd albums.
Despite an army of hired guns to write the lyrics, Roger's absence is painfully apparent. No concept, no poetry, no depth. What I don't understand is Gilmour's solo LP, About Face, presumably written by him, had some good songs w- good lyrics.
Great list, young man. The Wall was my introduction to Floyd when it was new when I was 11, been a fan ever since. Great to see a young guy like you appreciate the classics.
So whoever reading this, if you HAVEN'T seen 'Echoes live at Pompeii' by pink Floyd, do yourself a favor and watch it all, it's an absolute masterpiece and very arguably the best song they made.
Ive seen it a couple of times since it appeared on RU-vid. It used to be my favorite floyd song but ive kinda drifted away from that sound and nowadays my favorite album would be Division bell.
In the album The Dark Side Of The Moon, the album starts with a melow heart bit and in the end of the album, ends with that heart bit fading away, reminding the listener how he was feeling before he started listening to the album and how he is feeling now. Absolutely the best Pink Floyd album ever created, one of my favourite albums out there.
One day I decided to make my personal ranking of PinkFloyd songs, so I first listened to Confortably Numb which I immediately put in first place, then I listened to Wish you were here and I put it instead of ConfortablyNumb at first place, then I listened to ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond so I decided to put HIM in first place... It lasted for hours and in the end I listened to ConfortablyNumb again... and I I put it back in the first place. This is an impossible task for me.
Pink floyd: *releases Dark side* Well, what shall we do now that we have one of the best álbums ever Made? *releases wish You where here* wow, now WTF we Will do after make two of the best álbums ever Made?! *Releases Animals* holy shait what we gonna do after three fucking Best albums ever Made? *Releases the wall* AND NOW THEY ARE 4 OMG *Releases the final cut* awww fuck
Fun fact: they recorded the sonar sounds on Echoes with a piano/keyboard. They used a special type of amp for piano/keyboard then just played a specific note and it came out that way.
Hands down all time favorite song is “Dogs” it’s long as hell and I probably annoy people when I show them it but just it tells a great story and I relate to the lyrics a lot too growing up
There is an album that was intended to release in between Darkside of the Moon and Wish You Were Here called Household Objects and it was scrapped but does have an official album cover. The album consists of them using household objects as instruments like pots and pans and rubber bands for strings, and wine glasses. It's hard to find the complete list of songs but alot of them are ideas that ended up on wish you were here. The song Wine Glasses ended up being Shine on you crazy diamond. There's a song called The Hard Way that you can find here on RU-vid. It's interesting.
"One album that I'm gonna exclude on this list is the More album, because it's technically a film soundtrack and it's not technically a studio album." *includes Obscured by Clouds, a film soundtrack*
How old are you? I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd for 50 year. I may not agree with your ranking, but I’m very impressed with your devotion and your knowledge. The are one of a kind!. Track by track. Bravo to you.
I'm 28 and mine started by hearing the wall and dark side on mom and dads record player and them telling me about them going to see the wall live, when cd's became a thing they got echoes, the division bell and wish you were here and i listened to all of those too. my favourite song might be wish you were here because i love the line "did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage" but i love high hopes too. i saw an older guy at work recently with a floyd shirt i'd never seen before and complemented him on it he asked me for my favourite floyd line and i quoted the one above, i guess he was checking to see if i would quote one of the more mainstream songs like another brick in the wall or money or something. he nodded at my suggestion of best line and told me i had good taste :D
1. The Wall (1979) 2. Animals (1977) 3. Wish You Here (1975) 4. The Dark Side of The Moon (1973) 5. The Division Bell (1994) 6. The Final Cut (1983) 7. Meddle (1971) 8. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) 9. Atom Heart Mother (1970) 10. Obscured By Clouds (1972) 11. More (1969) 12. The Endless River (2014) 13. A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) 14. Ummagumma (1969) 15. The Piper at The Gates of Dawn (1967)
On the wall you can hear in the end of the song "outside the wall"(the last song of the album) someone saying "isn't this where" and in the song "in the flesh?"(first song of the album) you can hear right in the beginning "we came in?" So it makes a whole sentence "isn't this where we came in?" Which makes it a perfect loop
I’ve been trying to figure out what he was saying for the past three days lmao. I love the wall, but there’s just so much to unpack that when you listen to it you notice something new every time.
Correction. "isn't this where we first came in?" It took me years of listening, over and over again, to work this out. And then I read it in a magazine, six weeks later.
Perhaps if the singles were included you might feel different. This a common thing in the vinyl days. Similar thought on Beatles releases. Piper is best. Saucer is great as well. They were moving away from singles by that point. Just a thought although. 💭✌️👌
I prefer that album too. There are some good songs. Let There Be More Light is a very beautiful song. Set Controls For Heart of Sun is really cool. Corperal Clegg is catchy as heck. Then there is Jugaband Blues, which gives me a big wooby feel. It is good for giving feels. Oh poor Syd.
Just want to point out that the whole point of the release of The Endless River was to pay homage to Richard Wright and use previously recorded keyboard tracks they had of Richard. They werent trying to make a hit record; they were just paying their respects in a way. Just wanted to point that out because u seemed to miss the purpose of the album and saying that david was just wanting to exploit the name for money was a bit offensive when he was actually just trying to show the world some great ambient keyboard recordings Richard had made. Other than that great video man
Some interesting views and pronunciations. It does suggest that you have listened to them all more than once. It’s taken me nearly 50 years...Well done!
Really enjoyed viewing your critique of the albums, clearly you put a great of thought into it. I'm doing an album of Floyd covers in radically different sonic colours, I'd be grateful for some suggestions as to which songs I should tackle next?
The Wall is brilliant. I understand why it's not everyone's favorite, it has a "drier" sound than other albums, but there's some truly underrated gems, like Goodbye Blue Sky, Young Lust, Nobody's Home and both In the Flesh's, in addition to the usual great songs.
Yes division bell is awesome and its way better than the final cut, and momentary lapse is better than final cut as well, this kid is annoying, just wanna punch him in the dome....
Overall I like Dark Side of the Moon, Meddle, Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Wish You Were Here the best in that order, and think there is a lot of great music on these albums and it has the best balance between the interweaving key boards, drum rolls and guitar with a surprising use of bluesy, jazz and even some funky elements with fairy tale psychedelic folk and penetrating philosophic treatise feel especially in Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were and Meddle. During these releases, the lyrics and feel of the music had more of a balance between light and dark moods and the lyrics were more original, poetic and representative of the ebb and flow of life with the heart beats, and the duality between eliciting a sense of meditative runner's high contrasted with a sense of escaping from great travails or merely running to catch up with moments that can never be retrieved as in the stunning TIme, which is why I think Dark Side of the Moon is overall their best album in seamless integration of innovation and peerless production of sound. I also enjoy Remember a Day,, See Emily Play, See Saw, Julia Dream, Paint Box and Summer 68 which I think would have been great as an extended more prog like piece since it has a mysterious and dour flower power feel with elements of love lost mixing psychedelia with the dramatic realism of the horns. It is an invocation of a frozen moment long ago in the perpetual sea of passing time with cool trippy harmonies. After Wish You Were Here, they began to descend into more morose music making with the Wall and Animals as well. I will admit it is powerfully pessimistic; since I lot of music is impressive but the downer feel makes it less appealing to me and it doesn't seem as innovative. From the Wall, I still think Comfortably Numb and Young Lust are fantastic songs that don't dig too deep a ditch of depression in my mind.
@William Magee i get your point however when the only reason you dont like an album is because Rodger Waters isnt in it...then i have to ask are you a Pink Floyd fan or a Rodger Waters fan?
wish you were here, time, what do you want from me, one slip, paintbox, and brain damage are some of my favorite songs, and there’s so many others that i enjoy tbh. props to you for going through the time to make a ranking for each album, must have taken you a while.
Dark side of the moon will always be my favorite just because of the time in my life I discovered it. Time literally made me cry when I listened to it, and Brain Damage is also so good. I know its normie, but I just love it.
@@mickeymurphy2487 always interesting how different music taste can be. I absolutely love Pink Floyd's sound and in my opinion the unreachable peak in music history
Like your breakdown of Floyd very much. Makes me happy knowing younger guys listen and appreciate. I remember buying DSOTM an eighteen year old and my old man being disturbed because I loved them them, still do. Regards
@@fizzpeakgamer1318 I adore echoes, but half that song is freaky noise. Like I said, Animals is such an amazing album with some of my favorite sounds from Pink Floyd, I just don't listen to it unless I know I can listen to the whole song all the way through.
@LegoGuy87 In all honesty, most of my negative feelings about Radiohead come from Kid A. I'll probably piss off a lot of people when I say this, but I can not stand that album and everything about it sonically. To me, Kid A is 50 minutes of tedious, banal, and pretentious electronica that never actually goes anywhere. Measured as a rock album, it is absolute crap. If you like that kind of stuff, all the power to you, but it just isn't for me. If you weren't too infuriated by that rant, could you please recommend me the album of theirs that has the fewest things in common with Kid A?
If you want to get high and drug yourself safely and healthy (without actual drugs) listen to The Dark Side Of The Moon with no pauses, entirely, lying in your bed, with the eyes closed, and imagine whatever related to what you are listening to. You're welcome!
I've been obsessing over Pink Floyd recently, having listened to them for fifty years, and started listening to your video with some trepidation, ready to end it if it didn't resonate. I gotta say a big well done for a really wonderful video. Well done. Wouldn't disagree with a word.
Any Piper fans? It’s one of my all time favourite records and one of the finest most honest pieces of art ever created. Syd is the greatest artist to ever live.
If Roger Waters is listening, I think that since he has brought back *The Wall* he should take a look into bringing back *The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn* in memory of bandmate Syd Barrett.
I will never forget the first time I heard that album. My mom bought the cd for the car and put it in after shopping. I had not really “taken in” pink floyd before. But it was my first real introduction aside from hearing the basics on the radio. I was hooked ever since
It's your favorite. There's no 'best' when it comes to subjective, opinion-based stuff. I love Us and Them, Comfortably Numb, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond, but that's only my opinion. I'm sure we're all collectively glad Floyd existed as a band, though.
@@rikk319 it is painfully obvious that is an opinion. When somebody makes a passionate statement, just let them make it, no need to tell them it is only their opinion. Quite sure they are aware.
