Sometimes i use ham but usually I use bacon. Then all I use is lots of onion. Salt and pepper and water. I like using the crockpot too. I am quite happy just having white bread with mine. I do usually make cornbread though. I keep Pinto, Great Northern and Cranberry beans on hand. This is how my Mother made them. Sometimes we put potato pieces in and sometimes flat dumplings. That is a favorite way of mine. Don't think those would cook up well in a crockpot. Grandma Sue in central Indiana

I sort my beans while still dry, a bit at a time, flat on a paper towel. I have found small stones fairly often. They are usually brown and easily stand out. They are capable of cracking a tooth if missed! Ask me how I know. Loved the recipe...thanks!
