Pioneer DJ DDJ-200 First Look - DJ with Spotify and Beatport Link streaming! 

For everyone frowning down on this (and thumping their collective "well-I-myself-use-only-turntables-blah-blah"), I think you're missing a HUGE point here. WIRELESS MIDI controller? That's pretty freaking groundbreaking. And I can see exactly why Pioneer has opted to introduce the technology to the casual user. First off, the hardcore, working DJs would normally scoff at this (shocker!). But, MIDI, when mapped properly, can have zero latency. MIDI is what's driving your top of the line DJ controllers (and time code vinyl BTW :) ). Just like rap music in the 80's, and digital DJing now, streaming music is here to stay. And its only going to get better from here.

I think it‘s a smart move from pioneer to expand and get more people interested in DJing. And if they like it they will probably stay with pioneer and buy their more pro-like gear in the future. The new WeDJ also looks nice. I‘m using turntables but maybe I can see myself getting this as a „let‘s go to the beach and have some fun“ setup.

I think this thing is so sick! You can literally DJ anywhere! If you are the type of person that just likes DJing for fun then why hate on this? I can’t carry my setup with me if I am traveling 🤷🏻‍♂️...I am by no means a professional DJ, I just do it as a hobby because I enjoy it, and sometimes when I am visiting family or friends I wish I had my decks and mixer with me, so how cool would it be to just whip this thing out of your bag and start jamming out and having fun? 😬🙏🏻

It looks like a pretty neat entry level controller. I remember when I bought the wego 1 years ago and this controller has some of the features that makes it easier to upgrade to bigger controllers. Plus the fact you get rekordbox when you plug it into a Laptop is a big bonus.

How cool is this little thing! I've been dj-ing for over 15 years - using vinyl, CD's, timecode, Mp3 / Rekordbox USB, midi controllers, you name it - and I get truly excited about this device. Nice little toy for myself and my 6 year old son to play around with. Definitely getting this.

This is a game changer for ultra portable setups even for more experienced DJs, since you can power it with a standard USB 5v power bank, which other controllers can’t do including the WeGo4. No laptop, outlet, or generator/expensive portable AC power necessary. Just your iphone/ipad, USB battery, and a good portable speaker like a JBL Boombox/Extreme and you can renegade DJ ANYWHERE with a full 3 band EQ mixer at a beach bonfire, park picnic, festival campsite, etc where I’d never bring my pricey laptop.

This looks like a handy controller for me if I ever decide to do a mix when out hiking. I currently use a ddj 800 & iMac at home but this and my iPhone would be great when on the road connected to a small portable speaker.

I’m a huge pioneer man and have two of thier controllers and I just bought this for my son and it actually works really good

Just to save you some money you can use djay pro with your ddjsx2 and play any Spotify songs

love the DDJ range of products from Pioneer Dj, the DDJ 200 looks towards the fun and have a go side of djing. Inexpensive, compact and simplicity . For someone really wanting to progress and take a real shot at djing I'd suggest the DDJ 400. Horses for courses.

This is the perfect controller , I have been waiting for my road trips and such. Imagine taking this thing on a plane, in a car , to the beach etc. definitely getting this!

been a dj for 20 years and use mainly vinyl with serato, but this is awesome. im gonna buy this just ot be able to mix anywhere,, especially when im on vacation with friends and family.

I am using this with Virtual DJ. Why any DJ doesn't use vdj boggles my mind! That beast software works with virtually any controller without any fuss. I easily mapped the bottom row of pads to looping, instant doubles, effects, load decks, and slip mode. I basically can mix anywhere when I'm inspired. I can scratch with it too. The only downside is it doesn't have a soundcard and internal battery. Maybe next time pioneer!

Phil, one can use a powerbank as a battery for the controller.

Dear Phil, to start with, i want to thank you for all your affords and Videos. They were really often help- and useful for me, wether it was just for a comparision or better Information on product(s), dj-ing in General, mixing techniques or also making a choice or decisision easier for me. Respect, and thumbs up (also to your Team, of course). I really like (nearly have to say admire) the way you managed to turn your Hobby, interest, knowledge and "from-the-heart-thing" into a Profession and a professionally running, well informing platform and business. Great proposition, but the lack of an audio interface is something horrible! If this thing had a basic audio interface and a midi cable it would be so much better. I was hoping it would be something like the wego with the tiny audio card, the usb midi connection and the basic outputs (headphones and speakers). I think itwould be much more usefull and people would keep it more time once they learn the basics and fall in love with this dj world. Personally, I dont think it is a great product, just a good idea. Pioneer shoul be thinking more about the future of their new djs like they did with the wego. That controller could be mapped for other software and had separation of audio for you and the crowd. Sorry pioneer, but you didn't knocked it out of the park this time.

Quick, fun, and mobile setup. Pretty unique and future guided for mobile djing. Its going to get mainstream for sure with everyone. I used Edjing Pro on my android and it is quite fun and serves as a backup. Not easy for hectic mix sets and long hours, but for that quick setup to get a party going. I love the internet streams from soundcloud, spotify etc...

I like the formfactor but who makes a new controller in 2019 without including a soundcard?

Incredible ! The DJ Industry keeps producing smaller, compact coontrollers for a low price. Maybe in the future there will be another company like in the mobile industry "Huawei", which produces DJ Controllers with many functions under 100 bucks.

It’s one of those toys where you wish you bought the ddj400 instead, great for mobile but when you use rekordbox on a pc it’s nice to have some more buttons on the controller rather than use the keyboard and mouse

I have an XDJ-RX2 because I don't like to rely on laptops, but it'd be nice to also have a DDJ-200 to cover requests and access music I didn't think to bring. Fantastic unit! Fantastic review!

Phil, an late response so you may miss it. I think the battery not in the device is a great idea and should be implemented broadly. Think of the total number of batteries less produced across the whole electric/electronic consumer market if chargers and power banks we all already have had so much more application. Less stuff to throw out to the landfill, easier maintenance, (hopefully) cheaper devices. I totally appreciate the less wires and portability mindset but you still need cables for this particular device. No ultimate right or wrong here but an interesting pro-ecological move, although not necessarily intended as such. Cheers, Tom

Reminds me of a cut down Traktor Kontrol S2 running off an iPad. That's the first kit I ever used, it was great fun and got me hooked.

i love pioneer , and do think entry level controllers are amazing as back up or for beginning dj's yet again i would recoment the ddj 400 over the ddj 200 ! reacon the ddj 400 give you more the club gear and pro feeling than the ddj 200 .

My office / studio doesn't have a lot of space so I think this is the one. It'll look nice next to my belt drive turntable and records

just got the DDJ400. will say, a really solid thing. what is sad unlike with the 200 is that you get rekordbox with the 400, but rekordbox doesn't utilize Spotify streaming ;-;

I love the size! Reminds me of my old Hercules DJ Instinct controller. If I use this with rekordbox on my laptop, how will I get sound out? Will the included splitter cable work on the standard mic/headphone port on macs and windows laptops? This would be a really good backup controller for my DDJ1000. I think the DDJ400 is also a good option but the size of this one really hits the spot for me. Maybe an in-between 'DDJ300' wtih built-in soundcard, same size, but with browser knobs and track load buttons should be developed too. That would be good for managing libraries, playlists, cue points and testing out new song combinations maybe...

Little thing: There is xy pad for effects in Rekordbox iOS for ages, but only for XDJ-Aero via wi-fi, which IMHO was extraordinary piece of DJ hardware (i’m still using it basicly every day and i have it for seven years already).. I still wish that Pioneer makes an iPad version of Rekordbox (remotebox is useless), but after all those years i doubt it..

looks like great small size affordable controler. but there is one big no with this device - there is no stereo output when using headphones for prelistening. so what should i buy together with this controler to have stereo output while headphone prelistening?

If you connect the USB to a laptop, does it cut out the bluetooth?

Can the speaker be bluetooth? If not what are some recommendations for speakers to purchase?

Can I use, serato dj Pro or virtual dj instead of the phone?

There must be a way to record as I’m using the DJAY app with my ddj200’s and mixing music off soundcloud but it will not allow me to record via this app . I’m running the decks off my ipad is there any way of recording a set so I can then upload my mix’s . Of course with normal decks you can use a sound card but I know you can’t do this with the ddj200’s . Can anyone help me in any way please . I would greatly appreciate it

DDJ 400 is the best

I actually would like to see these features in the likes of a DDJ 400, eg. Bluetooth midi and streaming support. Just a simple setup that could add som flare to parties, where the only thing you need to bring is the actual controller (assuming you always got your phone with you anyway). This one however is a bit too lackluster and toy-ish to be able to use as anything but that.

You mentioned a mono splitter cable? Can you elaborate on that a bit? I will be hooking it up to a mixer then out to my Mackie thump and jbl subwoofer speakers. So I would definitely need stereo 👍

Great review. I get what your saying about an integrated battery to lose the charging adapter however most bluetooth speakers have a USB power output or you could use a power bank albeit there would need to be a cord. I have had a wego4 for when basically backpacking and currently use a ddj400 at home. When I'm out out the rx2 and cdj's are used. The ultimate turning point is when rekordbox and some of the higher end controllers have the streaming function integrated because as you said this isnt the future it is now.

This is the super portable solution I have been looking for on my tablet. I would have liked the bigger ddj-400 however I'm not sure if that works with the WeDJ app using a wired connection.

I currently have (and have had for quite some time) I more conventional set up ..... 1210s and a DJM 450 ... I’ve bee DJing for some time now but seriously considering this as a transition in to the digital era! I just see the Bluetooth connection being an issue, I’d either need to buy a complete new speaker set up or get a controller which can be integrated in to my current set up

Looks good, but here is something most people don’t consider, what if you get a phone call during your mix...😂😂😂, I think pioneer is going the right way, hopefully in a few month we could have the pro controllers also wirelessly connecting to laptops and phones etc without the lag

Nice for beginners! My question is what does the sweep fx do? Is is it just a bandpass effect? I have a DDJ-1000, and I just don’t understand when I’d want to use it in my mix.

The music sounds much worse with that dongle in my experience. I guess it makes sense. Is that audio out mono?

This unit should come standard with a copy of "Rock The Dancefloor" : ))) This seems like a little power house when you get to know all the features. For on the go DJ's you can turn any plain house gathering between friends into a huge party . . . .cheap : ))))

Was about to buy a ddj400 as a backup controller for when the shit hits the fan. Now I’m torn. The less space and weight taken the better for such a necessity so what do you reckon? ddj400 with laptop or ddj200 with phone? Remember, strictly as a backup that hopefully will never even need to be used.

HOW DO YOU SWITCH FROM DECK 1 AND 2 IN THE HEADPHONES?

I have just ordered one for fun just take away with me while working away plus I will have to add it to my set up plugging it into my Traktor s8 it’s something different I can have two decks running vinyl time codes one channel with the DJJ 200 plugged in with two decks playing and one channel with a remix deck or the other way round I think is a good idea from pioneer the fun of Traktor and pioneer software working side by side the fun of both worlds.
