Recent surveys on children's eye health and myopia by JCI Peninsula and Peninsula Lions Club reveal that nearly half of the families have children suffering from myopia, yet only about 30% of these families get comprehensive eye tests. Leading by Prof. TO Chi-ho, Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health Head, School of Optometry, and Mr LEUNG Tze-man, Jackson, Alumnus of PolyU and Co-founder of Vision Science & Technology Co Ltd (VST), PolyU academic-led start-up, VST has successfully developed breakthrough "myopic defocus" technology, which is applied in their pioneering product, the Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact (DISC) lens, thereby more effectively control myopia progression among children in Hong Kong and beyond.
One of the causes of myopia is eye elongation, which occurs when our eyes focus frequently on nearby objects. The muscles that control the rolling of the eye become increasingly strained, leading to the lengthening of the eyeball. As a result, the image of distant objects cannot be focused clearly on the retina. Typical myopia lenses can correct the projection of image onto the retina, but they do not prevent the elongation of the eyeball, and these lenses will become thicker over time. The research team from VST conducted a clinical trial involving Hong Kong children aged between 8 and 13. The results showed that wearing the DISC lenses for eight hours daily slowed down the progression of myopia by approximately 60%. This finding brings hope to affected children and their parents.
VST has received financial support from the PolyU Micro Fund and the PolyU Tech Launchpad Fund. In 2018, VST secured a licence from PolyU for commercialising DISC technology, which VST manufactures and distributes DISC lenses at its authorised optometric clinics and fitting centres.
