I'm predominantly Scotch Irish and I love the smell of pipe tobacco and I am a pipe smoker of thirteen years into smoking pipe and let me tell you I'm 35 years old and still smoking a pipe. I have a pipe that I smoke that a good friend who is a first time mom gave me and I have been smoking the pipe since then
Also from the Scottish highlands. When he opened his mouth and spoke I was surprised and satisfied. Made me feel good. That accent is one of the best in the world. I don’t smoke a pipe, I enjoy a bit of snuff. It’s interesting highlanders enjoy a southern drawl
The accent is a curious mix of American Southern Genteel and Appalachian, and it's more than a little fascinating to hear the two combined in this way.
I lost my father 2 years ago when I was 17. The wise words in this video is what I really need right now as I'm currently feeling lost and confused. Thank you sir for sharing your wisdom. I hope you and your family are always in good health and always under the protection of The LORD. May God bless you, sir.
Lost my mother several years ago; never easy and never fully heals. But we know who they were and we know their teachings. They are always a part of us. God bless you.
My sympathies to you and your family. As I learned from the passing of my father, you will begin to walk in his steps. Do not lose touch with your father's friends as his friends were his "board of directors" whose opinions mattered to him and helped him evolve into the man that you respected.
I know that feeling all too well. I lost my Father on Thanksgiving Day, in 1982. I'm now 52, and still have days when it hits a bit harder. I bought my first pipe in 1986. A Peterson 150. When those feelings hit hard, I pack a nice pipe, and take a walk. Remembering the lessons learned, and what he meant to me, and what I meant to him. Keep the faith young man. God speed.
Although not a pipe smoker me self, my grandfather was A PIPE Aficionado! He was the absolute definition of a Scholar and Gentleman! Yes, you sir are of the same caliber! We NEED not just MEN.... We NEED GENTLEMEN. And I LOVE how you are keeping the pipe lit and representing what a pipe smoker and GENTLEMAN is all about! I needed this, and the rest of my generation, even more so!
It astounds me to see a hobby like this where I have never once seen someone who was being impolite or behaving like an idiot, even in RU-vid comments! Every piper on RU-vid is so calming and well mannered, you could even watch them in polite company! This kind of thing just doesn't exist anywhere else, I hope it never goes away
Imagine all of western civilization at one point put manners and civilized behavior at the forefront of what really mattered. What a time it was to be alive.
Gentlemen will never die. America is a mixing bowl of initiation from every country in the world. It will take time to fully integrate people and form our own culture apart from our European ancestors. This is what it feels like to live through history
As a pipe smoker and a pastor I believe that my faith and time spent talking to God are intertwined and it's time set aside to relax and listen to God and review what scriptures I've read that day and the sermon I'm about to preach or just preached the previous Sunday...my grandfather had a profound effect on my life and many treasured discussions we had were discussed while he smoked his pipe...I will continue to pass this tradition on as he did to me...God bless you and your channel... Pastor John Stoddard
Thank you for creating this channel and the work it takes to share your thoughts. I have been a pipe smoker for over 40 years. This CODE that you speak of, is a significant part of a much larger philosophy on living and that we strive to achieve and pass on to the next generation of pipe smokers .
Thank you, sir, for the forthright honesty about the character, demeanor, presentation [to others], and disposition of the gentleman pipe-smoker. No apologies for it’s old-school overtones, from an increasingly by-gone era of our forefathers, when how one holds themselves is a matter of honor, respect, good stewardship of blessings, and the high calling of joyful gratitude for one small slice of heaven here below. Thank you very much. - j.a.c.
I recently have taken to pipe smoking. My maternal grandfather would don a smoking jacket in the evening after dinner, he would smoke a bowl of his favorite leaf in the lower living room quarters. That's been decades ago. When you talk of manners and respect, I have a shop where I work on vehicles and tractors, for myself, as a hobby. I will not allow smoking in my shop because of fire hazards, and I will not in anyone else's shop out of consideration and respect. I am, however, not above offering a beer and a sit down outside if a smoke is desired. With all things being cordial and friendly. I've just subbed your channel and 👍
So glad I stubbled into you! As a boy I always enjoyed time with my uncle, his conversations and the smell of his pipe. I learned many things during our talks. Keeping your belongings well maintained, a washed and waxed vehicle, polished shoes, the smell and texture of fine leather goods like a briefcase or belt, the enjoyment of a finely crafted double barrel shotgun, how to be respectful and listen to the stories of your elders. The smell of cherrie cavandish brings those childhood memories back to me again. I think I may go buy a pipe this weekend . Thanks for your content!
I agree with that. My husband and I in general started talking about our cursing behavior. Cursing isn't something that people should get into. Use better words. It's not just for the younger people in the room but it creates a specific vibration in a person's life. It invites a person to be negative and crass rather than choosing the better option of not cursing. So, we have slowly started changing how we speak and it's interesting because we have watched our group of friends with it almost like a game. When we curse less, they also curse less. But when we drop the F word frequently, they also curse more. So, it doesn't just affect you energetically, but it affects others. Psalms talks about cursing and how it effects the spirit and clear down to the bone marrow. It creates a breach in the soul. But your behavior is so much affected and influenced by how you speak that it completely determines what type of social circles your even allowed into also. I've noticed also that the people with the most mouths are the ones who smoke cigarettes and also cigars and weed. Basically, the more addictive and chemically changing smokes. I find that fascinating as well. But you do almost seem to gain 100 more wise points when you are seen smoking a pipe. Maybe it's the design of the pipe. It's almost designed for you to hold yourself further away from the smoke, plus it makes you think because you have to actually forge the heat of the bowl while you're smoking too. So, you can think about what you say rather than do. Also, I find it interesting that people who generally smoke like a chiming are angrier people than those who like to sip on the smoke, and you rarely see even a whisp of smoke come out of their mouth. It's like the art of the womans hand fan. You can read the character by how a woman communicates with her hand fan. you can read a man's character by how he smokes a pipe. Unfortunately, etiquette is being lost amongst the younger generations and that's something we need back.
As someone who sadly does curse at the moment, I mostly see cursing as a laziness for using better words. Why actually express your destain for something when you can just curse a bit. It's a bad habit and I wish for it to be gone soon.
Oh come on...words are words...and words do have power. But watch a little Carlin, and there's a lot of shit of his material I didn't agree with, however; a lot of it was simply fucking funny and true!
@craigchastain7016 cursing in general doesnt bother me so thats completly irrelivent. I speak the way i speak because people tend to misunderstand my statements on youtube if i give short answers and i get comments like yours. To each their own.
I am 25 years old, I am a traditional Roman Catholic, and I am a pipe smoker. I like the talking points....dress well, take care of yourself, etc. Keep on your truth seeking path. Read your Bible, but try reading some St. Thomas Aquinas when you get a chance. It's right up your alley! May God bless you.
Out of all the channels focusing on pipe smoking you articulate best what drew me to smoking one myself. I tend to agree with all your points in this video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I stumbled across this channel looking for topics on pipe smoking. I'm glad I did! I agree with all of your points, and needed to hear this. Please post more videos regarding etiquette and being a gentleman in a world where the true gentleman is vanishing.
As a courtesy I wanted to say thank you for your video. I’m 41 years old now and took up pipe smoking almost two years ago. My grandfather passed away over twenty years ago and I saved his collection of pipes from going into the trash. I have no memory of him smoking. After learning from instructional videos by another RU-vid creator I have developed a love for smoking a pipe. My wife loves the aroma. My friends who smoke cigars together include me in those gatherings. It’s a conversation starter among strangers. Everyone says it suits me. It’s akin to being a writer or a curmudgeon; you’re not really a pipe smoker until someone else says that you are one. Your content and pleasant manner of presentation is much appreciated.
I found your channel in the last three or four months. I gave myself a present this year with my birthday. Pipe smoking at age 49. Loved your videos and sad to see that you have discontinued your dream with this hobby. I agree with all you presented in this session. I strongly agree with your last unwritten commandment, which was health. I am a PT in the geriatric community of rehabilitation. The obesity rate I see with my patients and coworkers, is getting worse. I run 4 miles a day in the morning and cook my own food 99 percent. Ride motorcycles as I don't own a running car. I have been fat twice in both my marriages that have both ended in divorce and found it is unhappiness that creates food addiction. Media and habits create unhappiness. This habit of smoking a pipe every night has brought me calm and time to think about myself. I thank you for assisting me in this new habit that brings pleasure.
I just stumbled upon your channel today. Very impressed on your words of wisdom. I'm a pipe smoker myself. And a avid reader. I read books on mostly history, science, technology and politics. You have a very rare southern charm I haven't seen in years.
Your words my fine sir shall not be forgotten this video was quite healing and it's made me reflect on the way that I need more self conscious about taking better care of myself I didn't think to find that in a video about pipe smoking that being said I'm quite thankful for your words may your days be forever blessed!
What’s funny is I was just talking to my pipe smoking friends about how much I enjoy reading while smoking a pipe. I’m old school and only read paper books though. I can’t do the “digital” reading thing lol. 100% agree with the health aspect also
This was a great video that really sums up why I'm interested in the pipe lifestyle. Modern society is missing class and ettiquette, and slowing down to think is always a good thing.
Great information as a gentleman of the older generation (55 +) many of your points are how I grew up,to present yourself, dress proper, well mannered & how you treat/respect others,as a Navy Veteran & spending my time in the south know full well were you're coming from something more places need to learn,as far as the health benefits go,far more unhealthy the lifestyle most live, rush rush here & there, sit idle on their smart phones & eat nothing but prefab crap out of a box
Thanks so much for this information out here. All that you have mentioned here is my type of man, very hard to come by but finally I met one and as a major trait of a member of this society ..I am definitely keeping him. I am proudly a pipe person 👍🏽
I don't know how RU-vid brought me here, it's an amazing channel. I love this conversation, I don't smoke a pipe but was considering it and didn't know where to start and after finding you I think I will.
I stumbled upon this video in the pipe genre and I was soon finding myself agreeing with your sentiments (namely your impatience with profanity). I’m going to be subscribing! I’m on the Texas Gulf Coast and wish there were a pipe shop near me to go puff with gentlemen.
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing. I haven't met many pipe smokers (two, so far!) in my country so youtube pipers give me the vibe I like around smoking the pipe and I like listening to the tips while working, it helps me focus! It is completely different from smoking cigarettes or weed. My mother even doesn't mind that I smoke the pipe
Hello from England, I'm 77, and I've been smoking pipes since I was 11 yes old. I have subscribed to your channel. Pipe smokers tend to look before they leap.
Found your website by a fortuitous rummage around and was absolutely entranced by your vocal delivery and regional accent which when you were searching for a phrase to encapsulate a pipe smoker , "contemplative" immediately came to mind? I still have my traditional briar pipe which I acquired in my early 'midlife crisis' of 25ish, some 40 years on I feel now maybe the right time to rekindle that pastime and particularly in the fashion that you so eloquently describe. I quit smoking cigarettes of which I smoked very few anyway some 10 years ago now but was exclusively a fan of "proper" American Peter Styvesant. Incidentally I have an ex Brother in law who was very much an Anglophile but has now returned to his family and homestead in South Carolina, boy did his time in Europe and England knock his accent out of him! with time I dare say it will return.
I believe we both share an idea of a Gentleman pipe smoker. A person of generalized common character may smoke a pipe and not change the perception of his image. Whereas a gentleman pipe smoker might exhibit a finer representation of the depth of their culture. A person should, IMHO, stand true to their integrity, personal responsibility, honor and conduct becoming of a proper gentleman. Decorum and respect for one's self and the company they occupy should repel loose course language. Of course, there are no foundations of conduct and smokers fill the measures of multiple social hierarchy. For me, I am a thinker and this event in my day gives me reason to pause, slow my pace and reflect or ponder deeper thoughts and ideas. I also enjoy to solitude which provides peace and quiet for the personal time for myself. I side with all points well made during your presentation. Thank you for sharing.
So very well said, sir! I am a 25 year old first time pipe smoker. I used to smoke cigarettes and dip tobacco. I quit all forms of nicotine cold turkey for several months, but found I still enjoyed a social smoke every now and then. Pipe smoking lets me scratch that itch in a very intentional and arguably safer way. Your video is so spot on. Speak well, dress well, be mindful, take care of oneself... I am subscribing. And can't wait to plan that road trip to your store when it opens! John
You have one of the calmest voices I have ever heard. And you speak with a lot of weight. Honestly your videos and little chats by the fireside have really helped to releive some stress. Thank you.
As a person about to venture into the world of pipes, I've been doing some research of the basics. Loading a pipe, proper smoking technique, etc. This video was an unexpected, but welcomed addition to that research. I'm a long time cigar smoker, but have been fascinated with pipes since i was a child. The aroma, the visuals, and the types of people I saw smoking pipes. The subject of this video, and it's content is key among them. I miss the traditional gentleman. A person who carried themselves with honor and a well balanced sense of pride and humility. Thank you for the education. Have a blessed day sir.
Sir it's refreshing to hear a southern gentleman speak of manners and responsible. I have tried a pipe but prefer cigars and came across you channel by accident. Thank you for your wisdom I am subscribing. In this day and age we need people like you. Thank you Bryan Allen Williams.
Thanks for this, and so true. I have had many introspective and philosophical conversations while tending my favorite Molina, with a Burley Cavendish blend.
You are a very intelligent and articulate pipe proponent. I don't smoke that much, but I have Peterson, a French pipe, and 2 Missouri Mersham corn cob pipes, and I consider all of these pipes as equal. I smoke Prince Albert pipe tobacco, and my father's mother's family (Kellar) emigrated from North Carolina.
I loved your final comment - "I hope you liked and got something out of this; - and if not, well there's other presenters out there" lol! Nice work. There SHOULD be some sort of unofficial "code of conduct" for pipe smokers.
Very good video, you mentioned that handmade beautiful Boswell pipe your enjoying. J.M. Boswell pipe shop is just 6 miles west of me here in South central Pennsylvania. J M and Dan are great people, and the pipe I'm smoking as I write this is my 1997 Boswell free hand with some of his north woods English. If one hangs around Boswell pipe shop for an afternoon you meet the very same character of good gentlemen your describing.
Your accent reminds me so much of Russel Edgington from True Blood. Haha. It’s a very posh old-school southern way of speaking. I’ve lived in the south my whole life and have never met anyone with your accent. It’s so nice to listen to
A Gentleman. This is a very brief Masterclass on how to achieve such goals. The Pipe and Tobacco are reflections of growth and wisdom whilst in the past, present and future. Very well done sir.
Well said sir! As a younger pipe smoker(27) it’s good to learn these qualities. I’m an old soul at heart and my pipe is a fine way for me to unwind after work and sit in peace.
27 here as well! Reading Lord of the Rings got me into it this last April, after a lifetime of being staunchly against any form of smoking. Always been an 'old soul' myself, though I fell out of use of that phrase when I learned that it's quite a literal one, being based upon a superstition of reincarnation. It's rare that weather is fair where I live, but I've really taken a shine to it all! I've got nearly three Ball mason jar packs full of blends I've tried!
22 year old pipe smoker here I would definitely say I am an old soul as well. I also have a deep admiration for fountain pens which I feel most people no longer appreciate as deeply as they should@@Eire_Go_Deo
I went from Neos (miniature cigars, exactly like cigarettes, but with a natural tobacco wrap and pack, no filter), to experimenting with cigars, then settling fully into a love with pipe smoking. I don't nearly have the endurance to finish a whole cigar nor the patience to keep a half-finished one in storage, but the pipe has always served me well. It gives me peace in times of stress, and ponderance in times of ease. Counter to what some may say about tobacco and its implications on our health, it has always been a very sacred herb and offering among indigenous cultures, and I see its health risk merely as a result of its modern-day abuse as well as through its industrial alterations to preserve not its substance, but its addictiveness. A choice to keep tobacco sacred and honorable is the choice I'll stand for. Truly, I feel that being a pipe smoker has only added to the healthy stewardship of my life. And if I were to challenge the notion of addiction, I often forget to smoke. It never comes to me as an itch, but a pleasure that I choose when I feel the time is right to a light.
With my new-found passion of this world, on this “level”, this man - his points and views and perspectives are truly inspiring. And honestly, just plain awesome. Love it.
Thank you, sir, for all the your honesty and direct clarity. Being a Gentleman is how I was raised. You talk is spot on. I recently had weight issues, took responsibility for it, and have change my life style and journey. I can say 100% you are on target with this talk. All the best.
Thank you, sir. I most often enjoy smoking a cigar on most occasions, but have smoked a pipe in the past and am starting back into this again. My grandfather smoked a pipe most of my life and I can remember the smell still today. I also appreciate that you give God credit in your life.
As a Yank, an accent that thick is liable to give me flashbacks of bayonets, minie balls, and gunsmoke! I am of course joshin' with you. Excellent video!
Well stated. Behaving in a civil way, displaying common courtesy, used to be normal. However, such behavior isn’t being taught in many homes today, nor being reinforced in educational settings. If pipe smokers can share such civility, all the better.
in the past few years I have been stopping using curse words. It's harder then I thought it would be. I think it's cause I grew up seeing it was ok so got in the habit. As a man now even when I hear a recording of me saying a curse word I feel ashamed. So it's nice to see other people advocate for less profanity
I have just recently discovered your channel and this happened to be the first video I watched due to it’s title. I found your views on the subject to be very interesting, especially with how you incorporated pipe smoking with every day etiquette, life style, life choices, and your faith. Not a pipe smoker myself, although I have smoked one a time or two, I have recently had the urge to take up the, well, I would say habit but that’s the wrong word and tends to give the activity a negative connotation. I have thought of starting pipe smoking. I have since watched a few other videos and enjoyed them. Thank you for the content.
I was watching 420 content and happy this video was recommended. Way to contribute to putting a good name on pipe and smoke communities. Image seems to be often overlooked and I'd love to commit to shaping up a bit myself
I am a new subscriber to your channel and find this video most informative. I have been smoking a pipe since 1967 and have always tried to be the things you have said. If I sit down, even outdoors, I will ask those in the immediate area if my pipe will bother them. Most of the time they will say no, I rather like it. If not I will refrain until I get somewhere else. You touched on other areas I have not thought of but will in the future.
I watched your presentation carefully and found it very stimulating and informative. I only joined the pipe smoking fraternity just recently, and realized that smoking the pipe is much broader than just smoking the pipe which by the way I enjoy very much! Even before I decided to start the hobby I realized it should be a gentlemanly activity, something special, at least for me! Please forge ahead with these videos. They are very special!! I am from South Africa and I am a retired educator.
I appreciate everything you said and I agree with you about the sports. I also hate profanity and believe that constant profanity is a public expression of ignorance.
Charleston SC native here just getting in to pipe smoking and stumbled onto your channel and it's quickly become one of my favorites. I would love to visit your store once it's built. Keep up the good work! Happy new year!
This was spot on! A significant and poignant commentary on how we enjoy this lifestyle. I am so happy to have found this channel On my return to the briar. Everything you mentioned in this video has been on my mind as of late. How we represent ourselves is paramount! Thank you for all your insights, They provide a great source of self awareness and comfort. Keep them coming! 🍻
Thank you so much. That was great advice and wonderfully chosen words for sure, it has given me a lot to unpack and ponder as I live into this pipe smoking lifestyle. Blessings!
This was a very nice list of points that suit not only pipe smoker but every man. I've also been walking almost every day and it really makes me feel better. I also notice that it helps with my anxiety. Thank you for reminding me of these important ways a pipe smoker should carry themself. Take care.
