Pipe Tobacco Review: Bell's "Three Nuns"

Another tobacco with a long history, Bell's "Three Nuns" was originally a Virginia/Perique blend produced by J&F Bells and supposedly a favorite of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The current version is a Virginia/Burley blend produced by Mac Baren.

Good morning Bradly. First of all - love your videos - I quit smoking about 25 years ago, mostly cigarettes but also pipes. I've kept my pipes (all 27 of them) and decided now that I'll be 75 years old this year - I owe it to myself to clean up the ole pipes and start where I left off. I used to buy a blend from Faders in Maryland called "Black Flake" that I enjoyed however I've been getting a ton of information from your tobacco reviews and would like to try several from your reviews. Just wanted to say thanks and please keep the videos coming. By the way - are you in Oregon???

My grandfather used to smoke "the three ecclesiastical ladies", as he called it. I developed the same love for what was a unique blend, nose and taste, until they took it first out of tins and then made a ready rubbed version, which was a pale shadow of the Three Nuns we knew so well. So I do have some baggage and have avoided this like the plague. But perhaps I should give it a go...

I started laughing when you began to describe the flavor near the end of the video. When you began to really describe that lawnmower scenario I began to listen to it through the perspective of somebody whom has never smoked in their lives. Not to say your description is a bad thing, it is very correct and what I have gleamed from smoking Three Nuns as well. It's just that if a non smoker was to listen to the flavor description they would probably think how absurd it would be that somebody would want to smoke something that tastes like that. Oh well, perhaps it is absurd. I guess I'm a man with absurd tastes. Anyway good review I always enjoy them.

Yes. lots of non-food descriptors to describe the tastes in pipe tobacco. Delicious even so!

Same can be said for lots of things, such as scotch whiskey. A good example is Laphroaig which has been describe in part like licking the inside of a chimney, licking seashells, and having a medicinal/iodine taste. Yet I find it quite interesting, a little harsh for an everyday drink, if I was so inclined. But very nice for an occasional dram.

I actually tried three nuns for the first time last Saturday, and then on Sunday I laughed at the coincidence when you said you would be doing this review during the Sunday smoke. Very good review, as always. Frequently I try new blends based on your reviews, which are almost always dead on, but in this case I stepped out on a limb and tried a blend without watching or reading any reviews prior only to see one advertised as up and coming the very next day. I must be getting better at this, as I drew many of the same conclusions about this blend before watching this video, and my thoughts were very satisfactorily verified.

I used to smoke Three Nuns back in the 90's when it came in rectangle tins and were imported from England, I think. That iteration was fascinating to me. I enjoyed it in small bowl pipes and was normally un-impressed until the bottom third of the bowl. The nicotine content must have been much higher then as it left me with a haunting desire for the next bowl. Many olfactory memories of autumn weather. That iteration went out of production and I've tried this newest iteration. I long for that lost blend but I'm not disappointed by this newest iteration. Just not the same. Maybe I'll develop new fond memories of this blend. Thanks for the review.

Hi Bradley, Funny, I just finished a tin of this blend. As an "old man pipe smoker" I have had the 80' version occasionally and found it good, although it didn't knock my socks off. Pretty strong and a bit harsh. This version is very dummed down, but I found it nice, but I found it didn't, as you mentioned, have the clean bright virginia taste and without the perique, I find it a more attractive blend. Thanks for the review.

Review of the pouch version of this: find the cheapest cigarette brand available in your region, extract the tobacco from the cigarette tubes, rub out vigorously, place in a plastic ziploc bag, and there you have it - enjoy! (The tin version is quite enjoyable, and Bradley’s review is spot on).

I need to try this one. I was prejudiced against Mac Baren blends when I first started smoking a pipe. Now I smoke several daily. I love their Burleys, and they use very nice aged leaf. Also while I'm thinking of it and I know you like strong pipe tobaccos, Coniston Cut Plug by GH is a winner, so try it out if you haven't.

I'm fairly new to pipe smoking, so maybe it's just my lack of experience, but I'm very confused when you say that it has a sweetness to it. This is one of my least favorite blends, when I've smoked it it's had all the bite of an aromatic, but the flavor of an English if you took out all the pepperyness and smokiness that makes them interesting. It's not bad, but there's just never a time when I want to smoke this over another blend. But again, I suppose it could just be my lack of experience. Love your videos, you're my favorite tobacco reviewer on RU-vid!

Good Stuff ! Smokes well in hot weather. My coins were on the dry side too. But not to it's determent. They were tightly formed and so dense they had to be rubbed out. I will put it in the hot weather/summer rotation. Great review. Hope your summer's going well.

This is an invigorating smoke--not a relaxing smoke. It's very sour and strong, with a tangy aftertaste that lasts for hours and hours (I like it). I think it lives up to its name as being a blend that will rap you on the side of the head when your thoughts are wandering off a bit too much and set you straight. It's excellent.

30 dollars a single tin at a local dealer in the US ? Incredible ! Here in Germany it is at 16,50 Euro/50g, but you have to pruchase online, no tobbacco store has it, perhaps in a big town or so. It is also burning very fast compared to other tobbacos. US version seems to be more rubbed out, Europe version coins more intact. Exc. review btw., specially imitation of Scottish dialect : D
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 7 лет назад
The price varies state by state. My state, Washington, has some of the highest tobacco taxes in the country.
@peterberger1931
@peterberger1931 7 лет назад
You don't have those bigger and bigger warnings on the tin. Here in Germany it has now become almost impossible to import tobacco from the US such as Pease since the new EU regulation "TPD2" forbids every tin not having proper warning in national language. And another problem: Due to EU regulation it is now forbidden to describe any tobacco product with terms taken from alimentation such as "mild"/"mellow"/"spicy" or "rum"/"chocolate" etc. Taxes are getting higher, freedom is getting lost.

Hi Brad, your description sounds very appealing to me, definitely I shall try this blend in the near future, as for tobacco leafs in this particular bend,they seem reminiscent to another Mc Baren's 'spun cut blend named Stockton, though judging on your review, this Tree Nuns might be a bit fuller and viriginias in it are supposedly less bitey than we are used to in regular Mc Barens blends. Thank You for your complet review, as always it was very helpful, Greets,Paul

Back in the mid '80s, I did get to try a healthy taste of this from another fellow who had it cellared for many years. At the time, I was not extremely impressed, but then again, it is not like I got to smoke a whole tin of it. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it lacked a definitive character, which I still look for in tobaccos today. The aging may have caused the perique to loose some of it's character, but I am not a huge perique fan anyway. But based on this review, I will try a tin. Most stuff I smoke these days has at least 10 years age on it, but it may be time to try a fresh mix. Thanks for the review, Bradley. :)

I was going to give three nuns a try but was put off by the changes to the blend from the original. I started looking for an alternative to the new blend that was more like the old one. I found various comments that Peter Heinrich’s Special Curly was very similar. I checked your videos and can’t see that you have reviewed that vaper. It’s one to add to the list. Anyone missing the original three nuns blend might want to give it a go

Hey Bradley. Nice review. I used to frequently, despite the high price, smoke the Orlik version and absolutely loved it. the coins were slightly smaller, the smell from the tin was of dark, fresh bread and vinegar. The flavor was bold and spicy. Very good - I loved it. The MacBaren transition was a great disappointment, as it tastes kind of like MacB's dark twist these days. Strength is amazingly low as is body. Just my opinion. Sorry you never got to try the Orlik!

Some might think this irrelevant, but my curiosity is piqued. Why and how did this blend get its name? I'm supposing that the blender had a sister and two aunts in convents and named the blend in their honor. Does anybody have any genuine knowledge or differing opinion? It has been a big hit with avid pipesters for quite a while, and was one of the favorites of J.R.R. Tolkein, who spent most of his waking hours with a pipe in hand or between teeth. At any rate, thanks for the informative review, and have a great day.

I am smoking this right now in the Middle East! Great tobacco well balanced and the level of spice is acceptable. What kind of flavors I get in my palate ? All natural flavors like hay and wood, some sweetness but not any overpowering vanilla or caramel toppings, which exist in aromatics. Dont know if it is fair to classify this as a aromatic? The cut is similar to FLAKEs / coin shaped cuts. But a little expensive to buy. That is my only reservation compared to other Mc baren and Dunhill brands.

This is one of the two go-to blends when I want to enjoy a wonderful pipe smoke experience without to much hassles (the other one is G.L.Pease JackKnife Plug). I tend to enjoy Three Nuns mostly during the day and JKP in the evening (because it is stronger). Despite the fact that it is produced by McBaren, Three Nuns is a great tobacco. bravo, great review. I'm running into a problem, you said you were a cigarette smoker for a long time, as have I. I much prefer my pipe to a cigarette but leading a bissy life as I do I don't always have the time for a nise smoke and I resort to cigarettes for a quick fix. do you have any advice on how to make the transition. thanks, cheers.

It's hard for me to say. I didn't have any trouble quitting cigarettes, but I know that is rare. I quit cold turkey and didn't touch anything with nicotine for months.

I'm having the same issue. The best thing to do is not to associate the two. The pipe is not a good substitute for cigarettes. It's better to find alternate means to quit the cigarettes and use the pipe as a hobby, and means of relaxation and enjoyment. Personally I'm trying different methods of nicotine replacement such as the patch, gum, chantix, etc. and trying to have much of it out of my system by evening so i can enjoy the pipe without overloading myself on nicotine. Over time I'll be weening myself off the nicotine little by little, and am hoping it works. I may not be the best to comment as I'm still smoking my fair share of cigarettes at the moment, and am only in the beginning stages of getting rid of them myself. But I figured I would share my plan, in the event any of it could be useful to you. Hope it helped. Good luck!

What about a real small pipe as replacement for your cigarettes? Have a look at, for example, Vauen Quixx.

new subscriber and new to the hobby. I'm looking for a "very sweet" tobacco. something with little to no bite and very sweet. is this it? anyone have any guidance? some background I smoke menthol ciggarettes and am attempting to QUIT. so far smoking a pipe has reduced my fiendish addiction pretty well. I have dunhill nightcap and frog mortons cellar on the way. haven't tried them yet. so far my experience has been otc stuff. some ok, some NOT. I vaped for about a year and did not smoke during that time. however our friendly democrats in PA took that from me and millions others. so I've been back to cigarettes since October. coughing, hacking, feeling drained. pipe smoking has reduced this feeling for me. so YES high nicotine content is a must or I'll smoke a tin in a day haha. but would really love something sweet. any suggestions?

Try Peterson Irish Flake. It's pretty sweet and pretty high in nicotine.

The Three Nuns that you get in the US is definitely different from the UK version. I think we still get the original product. Great English accent by the way 👍
