Really cool taking the time to help a guy out I wish I had more people like that around my area I’m 90% self taught through trial and error but repairing farm equipment I kinda lucky with lots and lots of practice I used to read book after book I could find at the library on welding and a few older guys would pitch a tip my way as a kid but not allot I sure would like to work next to someone like you and really take my welding skills to a new level and possibly even get on a pipeline as a welder some day this is becoming one favorite channels on welding thank God for RU-vid it’s really helped reaching out and getting more perspective from different people on what or whatnot to do just more tools in the tool room and I feel more confident tackling new jobs I haven’t tried before and it’s working out better for the customers I help also everyone wins 👍

I find your videos very interesting because they are real world, not some guy in a laboratory with perfectly cleaned flat metal doing a butt weld. I only use TIG on sheet steel 18-20 gauge. If you have the interest there could be a lot of viewers who are looking to learn practical tips about this same process. Thank you.

True color lenses are a big advantage. You can actually see what colour the weld/arc/markings are. No more green or yellow. 3M has several true colour lenses, ESAB aswell, the ESAB A40 true colour helmet is the same lens that the ESAB sentinel helmet has. Only cost around 100-150$ depending on country.

Man you’ve helped me so much, I’m not a natural at running beads. I’m 66 years old and trying to figure it out and do it right. There are several things you can’t help me with, one is I’m getting pretty shaky but I’m doing all right, another one is bad rods. I bought some cheap 6010’s at the welding supply that are red, I’ve tried everything and can’t make them work so I bought some of the better rods that are Lincoln 5p+ and man they are great and run smooth, 3/32 or 1/8. I’m welding with a 2010 miller bobcat, I almost bought a vantage 300 when I bought the miller but wish that I would have bought the vantage now. Thanks for all the help.

Honest question here: Austin did a two bead cap with 7018. If you're worried about the slag getting in front of the puddle, how come you don't just run uphill from the bottom instead of downhill from the top? I've watched a lot of your videos and they're very informative. Thanks for all the help you given me.

I don’t know what to tell you other than practice. Every fit it’s different, every machine is different, If it was me, I would not run a 3/32 gap But that’s what most uphill welders like. I would running a little bit tighter and little bit hotter.

How do you start out getting a pipe welding and fitting job for the oilfield/ oil and gas companies? Do you contract yourself as a welder/fitter or do you have to have a welding rig, do you walk on a refinery and ask? Call big name companies? Go to a welding company and hire on with them? I’m thinking about going to a welding school just to get a lot of reps and learn TIG and downhill. I also have a year+ of pipe fitting. Any help would be so awesome.

Question Chris, you guys were beading with 1/8”. What heat were you running for that small of a gap? And then another question, if you were running a 3/32 Gap and beading with 1/8”, what heat would you run? I got a vantage 400, and I’m gonna be getting into pipe welding within the next few months, I’m just trying to learn my machine for 6010, been struggling with it when I practice

Any recommendations for building up material? I have an AC welder, needed to make drive wheel that connected directly to an electric motor shaft. I found four pipes that tightly nested and was able to cut the first for the keyway. But, I needed to increase the outside diameter about 1/2" - 3/4". I started with 6011 at 75-85 Amp... but switched to 6013 and turned it down to 60-65 Amps for the last couple of layers. All of these rods were 3/32". They didn't want to build up material very much. I did a diagonal criss-cross patern instead of solid. Any ideas? Thanks
@TaylorWelding
@TaylorWelding 9 месяцев назад
are you just using what you have?
@TaylorWelding
@TaylorWelding 9 месяцев назад
how thick is the material?
@alanbutler7712
@alanbutler7712 9 месяцев назад
@@TaylorWelding Yes, I am using what I have. I do have 1/8" 7018s, (from when I was using a DC welder to build our horse barn.) I have some 1/8" 6013s, but thought I would encounter a lot of sticking at the lower Amps. Plus I had 4 times as many 3/32" rods. The material is a cylinder with a 5/8" arbor hole, then is built up to be about an inch thick just with the three nested pipes. The outermost pipe is probably about 1/4" thick. I managed to get 3/8"-1/2" of metal added to this through multiple weld/grind cycles. After welding, I would securely attach it to the motor, turn it on, locate the high spots, grind them down enough to run the angle grinder on it while it was spinning to level the surface, and add more material where it was still low.
@alanbutler7712
@alanbutler7712 9 месяцев назад
@@TaylorWelding Since I am self taught, and only sporadically weld, I believe that it is possible to not have the power high enough to get a good weld, or get interference from foreign material that will keep the weld from penetrating appropriately. This would create a huge build up of material, but without being secure, which I don't want. I had forgotten that the 6011s were deep penetration rods, that is why I started with them instead of 6013s. Should I use other material, (like old rods cleaned of flux), to build up the thickness of the weld quicker? I didn't think of that while I welding on it. Thanks for all your help!
